Licencing

What is a licence? +

A licence grants you permission to play, coach, officiate or perform any other number of roles within various national, local and regional competitions in England.

Your licence validates your insurance, which covers your for accidents as well as including professional indemnity and public liability insurance if you are a coach or officiate.

As a Basketball England licence holder, your licence extends to Great Britain led programmes and international fixtures through their affiliation with FIBA.

Once you have purchased a membership, you will need to validate your licence, and the criteria for each licence varies.

Do I need a licence? +

All players, coaches, and officials require a BE membership and licence before they can get involved with a basketball game

What licence do I need? +

This will depend on the competition level you are competing or officiating in.

If it is a national level competition like the NBL, WNBL or Jnr. NBL, you will need a Performance membership.

If you are competing in a regional, local or BUCS competition, a participant membership is required.

A Performance membership and associated licence also covers regional and local competitions, so if you play across all levels a Performance membership and licence is all you need.

I'm a coach and a player, what licence should I get? +

If you play and coach, or partake in any other role at the same club or another one, upon joining select all the licences you require.

You will be charged based on the most expensive one, with all other licences included within the fee.

You will still need to undertake the various validation required for each licence for it to be activated.

I am a non-national player, why is my licence suspended? +

It is likely suspended as we require your club to process you through FIBA clearance.

Please contact your club regarding the next steps required.

Why won't my profile photo/passport upload? +

Please ensure that it is in one of the accepted formats ( jpg, jpeg, png, docx, doc, pdf.) and smaller than 4MB.

I am joining a new club, how do I leave my old club and join the new one? +

Please head to the 'Clubs and Teams' section of your profile.

In that section, you can request to be released from your current club. Once the release has been actioned, you can use either your club's name or their 'CA code' to send a request through.

A Basketball England Membership doesn't hold an expiry date as this is free.

National League player licences are valid from 1 Septemeber-31 May and all others are valid until 31 August.

I have previously completed a qualification but it is not showing on my profile, how do I get it added? +

Send a copy of your certificate to [email protected] and the details can be added to your membership.

A document I submitted has been rejected. Why might this happen? +

There are a number of reasons why a document may have been rejected, but the most common issues are:

  • It is not a suitable form of evidence, or does not prove/show what is required
  • It is blurred/unreadable, and needs a clearer photo/scan uploading

If you need to speak to someone about a rejected document, please contact us here.
