Leicester Warriors 82 v 96 Reading Rockets

Leicester tipped off their double-header of NBL Division One action with a tricky match-up, with Reading looking to bounce back from being knocked out of the National Cup last weekend. The hosts led early on, getting the better of a cagey start, before the visitors from Berkshire went on a dominant run to end the first period. The second quarter quarter would see much of the same, as the Rockets pushed their lead out to 20+ and looked to be in control. However, Coach Karl Brown's side were not ones to give up, cutting the deficit to just three points towards the latter stages of the third period. A strong response from the visitors saw them rebuild a double figure lead as the Warriors were not able to challenge down the stretch.
The visitors from Berkshire were paced by 21 points from US forward AJ Carr, who added 16 rebounds and eight assists. Sydney Donaldson had 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists, supported Daniel Carter's 17 points, six rebounds and eight assists. Leicester were led by 21 points from point guard Pak Chingombe, as he added six assists and two steals. Brian added 17 points, while Lamin Willan and Martyn Gayle had 15 and 14, respectively.
Team Newcastle 83 v 80 Hemel Storm

Team Newcastle began their home double-header by picking up their first league win of the season, in a nail-biter against the visiting Hemel Storm. The visiting team from Hertfordshire would lead for much of the contest, before a 25-19 fourth quarter swung things Newcastle's way as they grabbed the lead in the crucial late stages. The hosts took their first lead of the second half with 2:40 to play behind an Eric Stafford jumper, before the lead changed hands multiple times. David Hanson then went to the line with 0:55 on the clock, icing two free throws to tie things up at 80-80. Hemel came up empty on their next trip as Blayne Freckleton committed an untimely turnover, which saw Eric Stafford then knock down three of four free throws in the final seconds as the visitors had to foul.
Tosan Evbuomwan had an exceptional game for Coach Ian Hewitt's side, pouring in 28 points to go with 11 rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Stafford added 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Hanson and Onyekachi Nzerem chipped in 15 and 14, respectively. The Storm were paced by 18 points apiece from Levi Noel and Tom Adorian, as Adorian also pulled down 11 rebounds and Noel had eight rebounds and six assists. Blayne Freckleton chipped in a double-double performance from the back-court of 11 points and 10 assists, but it wouldn't be enough for Coach Robert Youngblood's side.
Barking Abbey Crusaders 58 v 88 Loughborough Riders

Barking Abbey were another side with home-and-home action this weekend, but got off to a tough start against the reigning league champion Loughborough Riders. A competitive game through the middle quarters, the second and third periods would see Loughborough edge proceedings by two points. However, the damage would be done in the first and final stanza's, as a 5-19 start gave the Riders an early edge, which they followed up with a 9-23 final period that put the game well out of Coach Lloyd Gardner's squad's reach.
Leading the way for Coach Mark Jarram's side were Hosana Kitenge and Reis Pinnock who had 17 points apiece. Kitenge also pulled down five rebounds and dished out two assists. The only double figure scorer in a balanced attack was Jonas Dieterich, who chipped in 10 points. Barking Abbey were paced by Jonathan Brown who had 17 points and three rebounds, while Chris Feeney also added 17 points, on 7-10 shooting.
Essex Leopards 79 v 98 Derby Trailblazers

Derby maintained their unbeaten start to the season to improve to 4-0 with a win over Essex Leopards on Saturday evening. The visiting Blazers trailed early on as Coach Thomas Baker's side got comfortable, but before long they snatched the lead back and gradually pulled away for a double digit lead that would ballon out towards 20 points once both coaches began rotating their benches. The Leopards were one of very few teams with just one game this weekend, as they saw their chance of a first league win of the campaign go begging in this one.
Malcolm Smith continues to be an unstoppable force in NBL Division One, as the US forward poured in 35 points, while adding nine rebounds and two blocks. The Blazers got support from import guard Tre-Shawn Wilford, as he shot 11-19 en route to 24 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists and five steals. Jake Wesselingh knocked down three triples on his way to adding 11 points for the East Midlands' side, while Kayne King contributed seven points, 12 assists and two steals. The Big Cats had five double figure scorers on the night, paced by 13 points and 22 rebounds from big man Lee Hodges. Rory Winter, Findlay Wood and Sam Newman each chipped in 12 points, while Luke Mascall-Wright added 10 off the bench.
"I thought our players showed real character to secure the win," said Blazers Assistant Coach Paul Bowen.
"The team chemistry is fantastic, with everyone working for each other. We have a nice blend of veteran experience and young guys who are full of energy which is making us a fun team to watch," he added.
Thames Valley Cavaliers 85 v 81 Nottingham McDonald's Hoods

In a battle of two NBL Division One newcomers, Thames Valley Cavaliers repeated their triumph in the Division Two playoff final as they grabbed a clutch 85-81 win on Saturday night. The win saw the Cavs improve to 2-2 on the early season, perched in ninth place. The hosts led for almost the entirety of the contest, quickly jumping out to a double figure point lead after a 23-13 first period. There was much of the same in the second quarter, before the visitors went on a tear to end the period, tying things up as the teams headed for the locker rooms. The Hoods managed to pinch the lead back momentarily in the third quarter, before Coach Robert Banks' side went on a run to build a lead that they would not relinquish. Smart play down the stretch saw the Hoods cut the deficit to just four points, before Martelle McLemore and Walid Mumuni were able to ice the game at the foul line for the Cavaliers.
Elliott Defreitas shot 12-16 from the field to pace Thames Valley with 25 points and six rebounds, while Aiden Saunders also chipped in with 16 points and six rebounds. Abdoulaye Sylla had an efficient outing as he shot 7-11 en route to 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists. David Watts saw his return to action for the Hoods after a recent concussion, pouring in 27 points in just 19 minutes off the bench, going 7-11 from behind the arc. Andrej Slavik would pace the starting group with 14 points and 10 rebounds, supported by 11 and 10 from Cole Welle and Luke Mitchell, respectively.
Bradford Dragons 75 v 89 Worthing Thunder

The penultimate game of Saturday evening saw Bradford and Worthing open up their double-headers with a game in the Dragons' Den. With Worthing rolling, undefeated at 3-0, and Bradford only picking up their first loss of the season last weekend at the hands of the Blazers; Dragons' fans were in store for a clash of two titans. Bradford got the better of the opening blows, but Worthing quickly rallied and went on a run that saw them build a 20 point lead by the half-time interval. The Dragons were more than willing to fight for the result in the second half, as they clawed it all the way back to a three point gap in the fourth, as a Jermaine Laing lay-up made it 72-75 with 2:38 on the clock. Alex Owumi and Jorge Ebanks had their way down the stretch, as the Worthing guards combined for 10 points in the closing stages, as the Thunder outscored their hosts 3-14 the rest of the way.
Zaire Taylor, recently named NBL Division One Player of the Month for October, paced the visitors with 29 points, six rebounds and three steals, supported by 25 points and 10 rebounds from Owumi. Ebanks had 11 points and three rebounds, while skipper Brendan Okoronkwo chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds. Ricky Fetske had his way inside and out on the night, shooting 10-14 from the floor and knocking down three triples on his way to 24 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Recent returnee to the starting line-up, Rafael Saipe added 12 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Rihards Sulcs had a near triple-double of 11 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists. Drexler Clark was limited to just eight points, as the US guard struggled to find his touch, shooting 3-12 on the night, before leaving the game with a dislocated shoulder.
Team Solent Kestrels 89 v 49 Manchester Magic

In the late game on Saturday night, Team Solent Kestrels had their way with a young Manchester Magic side in front of their home fans, pulling off a dominant victory to improve their record to 5-0. A rough start to the contest saw them quickly fall behind, limited to just nine points in the first quarter. The second stanza wouldn't be much kinder to the visitors, as the Kestrels pushed their lead out to beyond 25 points at times. The Magic remained competitive throughout the third quarter, before Coach Aurimas Verbukas emptied his bench, which saw the scoreline get out of hand. An exciting game for the Kestrels fans saw their team dish out 28 assists in an up-tempo affair.
On his debut in front of the Kestrels' home fans, Nick Lewis showed out and did the bulk of the scoring for October's NBL Division One Coach of the Month, Matt Guymon. Lewis poured in 31 points, including five triples, while adding four rebounds and five steals. Jon Averkamp chipped in 19 points on 7-11 shooting, while Herm Senor II had nine points and six assists in limited minutes. Andre Gayle knocked down three triples for the visitors, en route to 16 points to pace his squad. US big man Jonathan Barnes added nine points and 14 rebounds, while Saul May came off the bench to also add nine points.
Team Solent Kestrels 77 v 67 Worthing Thunder

The Kestrels were back on court very quickly in their double-header action, as they welcomed Worthing back to the south coast after a trip up to West Yorkshire. With both teams headed into the game protecting undefeated records, the two teams were clearly ready to go for an important match-up. With Nick Lewis out of the line-up, unable to face his former club, the Kestrels would need much more from their other back-court members. The hosts led early, jumping out to a double digit lead after the first quarter. The Thunder then struck, unleashing a 10-28 second stanza as they grabbed the lead back heading into the half. In a role reversal, the Kestrels came out of the locker rooms to take a 25-11 third period, as they then held a lead that they would not relinquish.
The Kestrels unveiled their new import in this one, as Travis Charles welcomed himself to NBL Division One with an 18 point, eight rebound and five assist effort for his new side. With chemistry issues still to be figured out, Coach Guymon will hope to see Charles' turnover count reduced in the coming weeks, as the big man had nine miscues on the day. Herm Senor II stepped up in Lewis' absence to pace his side with 23 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while skipper Louie Kirkman shot 9-14 on his way to 19 points and five rebounds. The visiting Thunder were led by 15 points from Brendan Okoronkwo, while Alex Owumni had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Tom Ward and Jorge Ebanks chipped in 11 and 10, respectively, as Zaire Taylor was limited to just nine points, shooting 3-10 from the field.
Team Newcastle 93 v 65 Leicester Warriors

Team Newcastle picked up win number two of this campaign, in as many days, as they downed Leicester in the back-end of their home back-to-back. Coach Karl Brown's Warriors got the better of the early exchanges, but Newcastle quickly got back in the drivers seat on their home floor. A double digit lead at the half would balloon out beyond 25 points for the rest of the contest, as Leicester never challenged and Newcastle put together a complete performance.
The one-two punch of Eric Stafford and Tosan Evbuomwan continues to cause problems, as they each had 24 points on the day. Evbuomwan would complete a double-double performance by adding 10 rebounds, with seven assists and three blocks. Stafford added four rebounds and four assists to his scoring effort, while David Hanson had 18 points in support. The short-handed Leicester side was led by 16 points off the bench from Joshua Pollock, while Brian Orr added 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists, supported by Alex Wilson who had 13 points, five rebounds and three assists. Pak Chingombe couldn't reproduce his scoring effort from the day before, but chipped in nine points, seven assists and two steals in a solid effort.
Barking Abbey Crusaders 67 v 80 Derby Trailblazers

Barking Abbey completed a disappointing double-header weekend on Sunday afternoon as they dropped back-to-back games at the hands of the travelling Derby Trailblazers. Having been unable to repeat an impressive performance on the road at Essex Leopards, the Crusaders now sit 1-4 in the league, while the Blazers continue their unbeaten stretch at 5-0. The damage was done early on in this one, as a 11-26 first period from Derby built a lead that would not let go of. The hosts would remain competitive, cutting the lead to single digits mid-way through the final stanza, but the effort wouldn't be enough as Coach Matt Shaw's side reeled off another victory.
Jonathon Brown led the hosts' effort with 19 points, eight rebounds and two steals, supported by Tautvydas Mieliauskas' 12 points as he shot 4-6 from downtown. Malcolm Smith continued his scoring onslaught with 26 points for the visitors, adding nine rebounds and two steals. Matt Ward-Hibbert chipped in 22 points and three steals, while Tre-Shawn Wilford added 15 points, eight rebounds, and three steals.
Blazers' Coach Matt Shaw summarised the weekend, "It felt like we controlled both games pretty well. Credit to Barking though, because they battled hard and in the couple of times where it looked like we might pull away, they kept fighting back."
"They have some good young players. We knew we would have to match their energy and that would be hard coming so soon after the Leopards game, but I thought we did so for the most part," Shaw added.
Bradford Dragons 89 v 95 Reading Rockets

After dropping a game the night before against the travelling Thunder, Bradford were looking for more success as they completed their home back-to-back against the Reading Rockets. The Berkshire side were high on confidence after picking up a win the night before, and carried that momentum into the opening exchanges of this contest. The Rockets got the best of the early play, leading by as many as nine points, before the Dragons rallied just before the half to take the lead before heading into the locker rooms down by one. A dominant end to the third quarter saw them build a double digit lead heading into the closing stages, but the fourth quarter was all Reading as they came back to grab the win. Trae Pemberton nailed a triple with six minutes to play to give the Rockets a lead that they would not give up.
AJ Carr came off the bench to lead the Rockets with 26 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Trae Pemberton paced the starters with 19 points and five rebounds. Sydney Donaldson and Daniel Carter rounded out the scoring with 16 points apiece. Coach Chris Mellor saw three of his starters combine for 66 points, but not get a lot of help outside their efforts. Rihards Sulcs led the way with 25 points on 11-17 shooting, adding seven rebounds and seven assists. With Drexler Clark out for this one after his nasty injury the night before, Andreas Lycoudis replaced him in the start line-up, knocking down five triples en route to 22 points. Rafael Saipe added 19 points and four rebounds, but struggled with the Reading pressure as he coughed up eight turnovers.
Dragons' Coach Chris Mellor reflected on his team's weekend, "I was pleased with our effort level in both games but we had to come back from a big hole against Worthing and a poor last period was our undoing against Reading."
Manchester Magic 55 v 82 Nottingham McDonald's Hoods

The final game of a busy NBL Division One double-header weekend saw Manchester Magic take to their home floor hoping for a better performance than their drumming the night before at the hands of the Kestrels. Unfortunately it wasn't to be for the hosts, who fell to their fourth loss in a row in league play, yet to pick up a win this campaign. The Hoods jumped out to an early lead as the Magic struggled to convert around the rim. More competitive second and third quarters saw the hosts give a better account of themselves, before Coach Aurimas Verbukas again let his reserves see some court time; the score ballooned as the Magic youngsters struggled to convert offensively.
Coach Ryan Westley will have been pleased to see his Hoods bounce back to split their double-header, paced on this night by 16 points apiece from David Watts, Cole Welle and Luke Mitchell. Watts shot 7-10 and pulled down seven rebounds to well and truly announce his return to action, while Welle dominated the glass at both ends to pull down 18 rebounds. Andrej Slavik also did strong work inside, going for 14 points and seven rebounds. Meanwhile, the home side were led by Josh Houghton's 17 points, four rebounds and four steals, supported by 13 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks from big man Jonathan Barnes. Loick Pouale came off the bench to add seven points and six rebounds.
Hoods' Coach Ryan Westley summed up their double-header, "Mixed emotions coming out of the weekend. Gutted about the Thames Valley loss, but delighted how the gents responded on Sunday. Luke Mitchell really stepped up as a leader and I was delighted with Cole Welle's performance on Sunday.
"I'm looking forward to gaining some momentum in the coming weeks with some local derbies and home fixtures," Westley added.
Southwark Pride 76 v 56 Barking Abbey

Southwark improved to 3-1 on the season with a comprehensive victory over London rivals Barking Abbey on Saturday afternoon. The game would start out close, as Barking got the better of the early blows, but Southwark unleashed an impressive second quarter effort that gave them a 10 point half-time lead. The Pride came out of the locker rooms with more of the same, as the lead grew to 20, then almost 30, before Barking gave a better account of themselves in the closing stages.
Jade Guidolin Duncan came off the bench for Coach Jackson Gibbons to drop 23 points and two rebounds, while Amelia Sandie had 17 points and two assists to lead the starters. Maya Hyacienth continued her strong early campaign with 15 points and six assists. Ann Sheaia paced the visitors with 17 points and two assists, supported by 11 points from Precious Adediran.
Ipswich 93 v 65 Team Birmingham Elite

Ipswich reclaimed second place in the WNBL Division standings with a dominant win over Team Birmingham Elite on Saturday, as a relentless offensive effort saw them nearly break the 100-point barrier once again. A 21 point lead at the half continued to grow throughout the third quarter, before the visiting Elite kept the fourth period to within single point, as they competed right to the final buzzer.
Harriet Welham poured in 29 points, including four triples, while adding eight rebounds and four assists. Charlotte Redhead came off the bench to also knock down four from behind the arc, en route to a 20 point effort. Esther Little dominated the boards to pull down 19 rebounds, going with 13 points and nine assists, in a near triple-double effort. Rebecca Brindley paced the visitors with 23 points, two assists and four steals, while Sandra Hewakowska added 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Lisa Greenaway rounded out the double figure scorers for Birmingham with 12 points and five rebounds.
Sevenoaks Suns II 68 v 63 Loughborough Riders (OT)

Rounding out the WNBL Division One action on Saturday night was a close contest down in Kent that saw Sevenoaks Suns II improve to 3-2 with a narrow overtime victory. The Riders would lead for much of the game, up by double figures even into the fourth quarter - before a big run down the stretch tied things up for the hosts. Back-to-back triples from Olivia Partridge and Katie Bennett ensured that the game would not be settled in regulation, as an extra five minutes went up on the game clock. A high scoring overtime period saw both teams trading baskets, before Ellie Hutchinson would give the Suns a 58-57 lead and the Riders would go on a draught. Hutchinson would follow this up with further key scores, supported by Holly Hayward, before Bennett iced the game at the foul line.
Bennett played almost 43 minutes in the contest, pacing her side with 24 points, five rebounds and two steals. The only other double figure scorer in the Suns' balanced attack was Partridge, who added 11 points, three rebounds and two assists. Meanwhile, Imogen Cook led the visitors with 13 points, six rebounds and two steals, supported by Holly Davies' 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.
Sussex Bears 71 v 63 Myerscough College

Sussex Bears were able to deal Myerscough College their first league loss of the season on Saturday night, as a crucial blip in offensive production in the closing stages saw the North West side come up short. A close affair throughout, the lead would change hands multiple times through the first 15 minutes, before the Bears settled into the lead. The gap would grow to 10 points towards the end of the third, before the Lancashire-based side stormed all the way to grab a lead of their own with five minutes to play behind six unanswered points from Sanmi Fajana. Sussex rallied behind eight points in a row from Bud Johnston, while Myerscough were held to just three points in the final five minutes, allowing the Bears to cling on for the win.
Cordaris Townes continued his excellent play for the south coast side, with 22 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and three blocks on the night. Johnston came off the bench for crucial scores, on his way to 22 points of his own, adding three rebounds, six assists and two steals. Myerscough were without crucial back-court starters Mate Okros and Callan Low, so relied on the production of Sanmi Fajana who had 18 points and five rebounds. Lewis McGlasson came off the bench for 14 points and three rebounds, while Demi Adenuga added 11 points and five assists.
Ipswich 77 v 103 Liverpool

Liverpool continued the impressive start to their campaign as they improved to 4-0 with a dominant win over Ipswich on Saturday night. An undefeated month in October saw David Ulph and Delme Herriman named Player and Coach of the Month, respectively, as the Merseyside squad have set their stall out as the team to beat in Division Two. The home side looked ready to compete in this one as they took the opening quarter 22-17, but Liverpool had other ideas as they outscored Ipswich 41-60 over the following two quarters, before extending their lead with a 14-26 final stanza.
Ulph was again in top form for the visitors, pouring in 32 points, while adding 14 rebounds and three steals. The offensive showcase from the North West saw multiple other double digit scorers, as Tyme Regent-Bascombe added 17 points, Jack Hudson had 16 to go with 15 assists, and Kehinde Ogunneye chipped in 14. The hosts also had a balanced scoring attack, which was paced by 17 points and 10 rebounds from Ethan Price, supported by 16 points from Veron Eze. Eivydas Aleksa added 14 points, while Cameron Hawes and Colin Dockrell chipped in 13 points apiece.
Westminster Warriors 88 v 63 London Westside

Westminster Warriors grabbed their second league win of the campaign with a routine win over capital rivals London Westside. The Warriors would build a 19 point half-time lead, as they won every quarter in a game that saw Westside unable to challenge. The loss sees Westside drop to the bottom of the table with a 1-3 record, needing some big results in the coming weeks to get their season going.
Justin Hitchman paced the hosts with 16 points, while Arif Sempala added 13 points and five steals. Juan Manning also chipped in 13 points, while adding four rebounds and two blocks. Player-coach Jon Johnson also got into the act with 10 points, five rebounds, six assists and five steals. Westside were led by 16 points, three rebounds and three steals from Levi Edwards, while Tyrell Isaacs added 12 points and five rebounds. Zaid Amini had 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals to round out their double digit scorers.
London Greenhouse Pioneers 87 v 75 Greenwich Titans

The final game of the NBL Division Two weekend saw London Greenhouse Pioneers grab a much-needed win over fellow capital squad Greenwich Titans. The victory was the Pioneers first of this campaign, as they improve to 1-2 on the season, while the loss sees Greenwich slide to join Greenhouse with a 1-2 record. The Titans led early in this one, before the lead traded hands throughout the second quarter. A refocused Pioneers side came out of the half-time interval ready to play, as they reeled off a 25-17 third period, and held off the Titans' challenges down the stretch.
Max Hufschlag paced the hosts with 22 points, five rebounds and two steals, supported by 19 points apiece from Kyle Diaz and Teni Mango. Skipper Mariano Lussenhoff came off the bench to chip in 14 points, three rebounds, four assists and three steals. The visiting Titans were led by Arturo Noha-Pascual's 23 points, as Ray Akpofure added 13 points and seven rebounds. Brandon Moncrieffe-Meade chipped in 12 points, and Louis Annan contributed 11 in the loss.
NBL Division Three
North league leaders University of Chester improved to 6-1 with a 101-63 victory over Sheffield Sabres (2-3), behind 31 points from Max Jones and 25 points from Philip Brandreth. Derby Trailblazers II picked up a clutch 83-82 at home against Team Sunderland to improve to 5-1 as Merson Paul and Blake Bowman chipped in 21 points apiece.
Meanwhile, in the South division, Team Solent Kestrels II continued their undefeated start, now 4-0, as they defeated Barking Abbey 71-56, with Ben Maranan leading the way with 16 points. James Dawe poured in 30 points as Cardiff Met Archers picked up their first win of their campaign with a 69-77 victory against Oxford Brookes University, while Swindon Shock grabbed a 88-96 road win over Cardiff City, behind Ed Potter's 30 point effort.
WNBL Division Two
Vicky Gray had 22 points for Nottingham Trent University who got their North league season underway with a narrow 52-55 win over Lancashire Spinners. The East Midlands derby between Northamptonshire Titans and Derby Trailblazers ended 61-84 in favour of the Blazers, who leant on a 35 point explosion from Alex Haley.
A delighted Blazers' Coach Leanne Chandler said, "I asked the ladies to prove a point to themselves in this game and they did just that. We didn't give our best performance the last time we played Titans, so we wanted a huge improvement on that and the team delivered. That said, it was far from perfect but it was a well-deserved win and great team performance."
West Herts Warriors and London 'South Bank' Thunder maintained pace at the top of the South, as the Warriors defeated Bristol Storm 76-40 and the Thunder got the best of Cardiff Met Archers II 51-65.

Coventry Flames grabbed a narrow 66-70 road win over Nottingham Trent Hoods, denying them the chance to close the gap on City of Birmingham Rockets at the top of the Midlands division. University of Nottingham followed suit as they defeated Northants Thunder 83-76 on their home floor.
Doncaster Danum Eagles were the victors in a top of the table clash in the North, as they defeated Liverpool Stars 81-57 to go 3-0 on the season.
Canterbury Academy Crusaders moved to 4-0 behind Sam Alajiki's 28 points in a 92-81 victory over previously undefeated Richmond Knights, while Chelmsford Lions snapped London United II's winning streak with a 75-95 road win.
Dorset Storm enjoyed an 86-76 win over Surrey Rams to round out a busy day on the NBL Instagram Takeover, as Alberto Romero paced the south coast side with 23 points.
