Loughborough Riders 104 v 70 Derby Trailblazers

Once high-flyers in NBL Division One, the Derby Trailblazers have come crashing down to Earth after a recent three-game skid has their 5-0 start to the season looking like a distant memory. After losses to Solent and Nottingham over the past fortnight, the Blazers did not fare any better in this all-East Midlands clash, as the Loughborough Riders took a commanding victory. The Riders came out of the blocks with a hot start as they poured in 33 points in the opening stanza. A fight back from the visiting Trailblazers cut the lead back down into single heading into the half, before the Riders ended the contest in the third period. A 33-13 quarter pushed the Loughborough out to 29 points, as the hosts led by 30+ throughout much of the final ten minutes. Derby slide down to fifth with the loss, now 5-3 on the season, while the Riders maintain their pressure on the leading pack in third place at 5-2.
Another balanced effort for the reigning league champions saw Alex Roberts lead Coach Mark Jarram's side with 26 points, seven rebounds and four assists, supported by 18 points and three rebounds from Lucien Cristofis. David Forsyth and Niall Harris chipped in 13 points apiece, with Harris pulling down 11 rebounds for a double-double outing, while Reis Pinnock and Yiannis Panaretakis contributed 11 points apiece. The only single digit scorer among the starting group, Jonas Dieterich did his work on the glass rather than on the scoreboard as he pulled down 11 rebounds to go with two points. Loughborough followed the Kestrels' recent example in keeping Malcolm Smith quiet to grab a victory over the Blazers, as the import forward had just 16 points, well below his league average of 28.3 per outing, along with five rebounds and three assists. Import guard Tre-Shawn Wilford chipped in a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, while academy product Charlie Brown came off the bench for seven points and six assists.
Blazers' Coach Matt Shaw was understandably frustrated after the loss, commenting, "It was a terrible performance from us really. Loughborough played very well indeed and showed why they are the reigning Division One champions. They have brought a lot of players back from that squad and after a slow start to the season they are now playing some great basketball.
Coach Shaw continued, "We didn’t battle well enough in the second half so we have to address that and become more resilient when we find ourselves behind. They hit fifteen three-pointers compared to our four and they killed us on the glass. I’d say those were probably the two most telling statistics, so we will have to work hard to get better and address what went wrong in those areas."

Barking Abbey Crusaders 92 v 85 Hemel Storm

Barking Abbey opened up their home back-to-back with a narrow victory over fellow league strugglers Hemel Storm, improving to 2-5 in the process. A cagey affair would begin with both sides trading blows, as neither team really could establish any dominance early on. The game was tied as the squads exited the locker rooms to begin the third quarter, which was when Barking took control as they jumped out to an eight point lead. Hemel fought valiantly down the stretch, but the Crusaders had done just enough with their good third stanza to hold on for the narrow single digit victory.
Scottish guard Chris Feeney paced the hosts with 22 points, supported by Ade Adebayo who finished with 18 and Jonathan Brown who chipped in 15. Meanwhile, Storm captain Bode Adeluola matched Feeney's output with 22 points of his own, as he got help from Blayne Freckleton (20) and Leome Francis (14).

Essex Leopards 95 v 84 Leicester Warriors

After only having tasted victory in the knock-out competitions thus far this season, the Essex Leopards were able to grab their maiden win of the NBL Division One campaign with a triumph over Leicester Warriors. The win sees the Big Cats climb up from the lonely spot at the foot of the table, now tied with Hemel, Manchester and Leicester, their foes on this day, with one win to their name. This match-up with the Warriors started with an even first quarter where the teams began to find their rhythm, before the hosts were able to seize control with a run of smart plays in the second stanza. The 12 point half-time lead was not insurmountable for Leicester, but the Leopards pushed on again as they extended the lead to 20 late in the third. A sharp run by the Warriors midway through the final period cut the lead back to 10, but the damage had been done as Essex picked up a vital victory.
Leading the way for the Big Cats was Luke Mascall-Wright who paced his squad with 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Big man Lee Hodges chipped in a near double-double of 15 points and nine rebounds, while captain Sam Newman had 11 points, six rebounds and nine assists. The three recent import signings for the Leopards combined for 19 points in 38 minutes off the bench as Dion Easton, KJ Lee and Asante Sandiford begin to find their feet with Coach Thomas Baker and the squad. Meanwhile, for the Warriors, Pak Chingombe had a game-high 28 points to pace his squad, adding eight rebounds. Lamin Willan chipped in 22 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Elhji Jabby and Martyn Gayle rounded out the double figure scorers with 12 and 11, respectively. The Warriors were notably without US import forward Brian Orr for the contest.
Leopards Coach Thomas Baker said after the game, "Picking up our first win was the main outcome that we wanted to achieve this weekend. We knew this weekend would test us mentally as both games had contrasting styles. Leicester proved to be tough opposition as they frustrated us for the most part and, even though there were a few lapses, for the most part we did enough to win that game."

Bradford Dragons 66 v 72 Team Newcastle

Bradford continued their topsy-turvy form on Saturday night as they picked up an unexpected loss at the hands of an ever-improving Newcastle side. Comfortable winners earlier in the season during the National Trophy group stage, the Dragons will have been confident of a victory heading into this one, but a resilient effort from Coach Ian Hewitt's troops kept Bradford to one of their lowest scoring tallies to date. The low scoring affair looked to be going the hosts way in the early going as they took an early five point advantage, before Newcastle stormed into the lead and were up by double digits just before the half. An impressive run by the Dragons either side of the third quarter break got them right back in contention as Rafael Saipe pinched the lead back at the line, before Tosan Evbuomwan reeled off eight points personal in the final two minutes to seize the win.
Evbuomwan continues his exceptional maiden season of senior basketball as he led his squad with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds. Captain David Hanson chipped in 18 points, five rebounds and two assists, while Ben Seipt and Onyekachi Nzerem had 12 and 11, respectively. Rihards Sulcs' 21 point effort the Dragons led all scorers on the night, as he added 11 rebounds and three assists. Jermayne Laing chipped in 16 points and six rebounds, while Ricky Fetske had 10 points and seven rebounds in the loss.

Manchester Magic 74 v 82 Thames Valley Cavaliers

The woes continue for Manchester Magic, who remained firmly rooted to the bottom of the NBL Division One table as they opened up their double-header weekend with a home loss at the hands of Thames Valley. The first half action saw the Cavaliers edge ahead as the Magic couldn't get their shots to drop, with the visiting side taking control holding a double figure lead. Inconsistency on both ends saw the lead grow in the third as the hosts couldn't get the stops they needed to chip away at the lead, but the game was not over by a long shot. A 17-5 run to start the final period cut the lead to just five, as the Cavs lead 65-70 midway through the final stanza. A timeout by Coach Robert Banks settled his side, as they went on an 8-0 run of their own to regain their composure. Despite the Magic's best efforts down the stretch, the game had gotten away from them again as the Cavs held on to improve to 4-3.
Abdoulaye Sylla paced his side with an efficient 20 point effort, shooting 9-15 from the floor, while adding 11 rebounds, five assists, three steals and three blocks. Martelle McLemore added 16 points, three rebounds and two assists, while Aiden Saunders knocked down three triples on his way to 15 points and nine rebounds. Elliott Defreitas chipped in 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals in the win. Andre Gayle did all he could to keep Manchester in the game, as he led his side with 24 points and five rebounds. Import big man Jonathan Barnes added a near double-double of 10 points and nine rebounds, while Josh Houghton came off the bench to add 15 points and five rebounds.

Team Solent Kestrels 86 v 75 Reading Rockets

Team Solent Kestrels continued their vastly impressive start to the season as they improved to 9-0 as the NBL world begins to run out of superlatives to describe their early play this season. The loss sees Reading slide to 4-3, putting an end to their four game winning streak. The late contest down at Places Leisure Eastleigh began competitively, with nothing to split the teams as the headed for the locker rooms at the half. Smart play in the third period saw the hosts begin to edge ahead as they build a 10 point lead throughout the quarter to control proceedings heading into the final stanza. The lead would fluctuate throughout the final 10 minutes, but the visiting Rockets could never trim the deficit to below five points, as the damage done in the third would eventually decide the game.
The Kestrels' import stars stole the show on the night, as Travis Charles and Herm Senor II combined for 53 points. Charles had 27 points to his name to go along with two rebounds and four assists, while Senor II poured in 26 points with four rebounds, six assists and two steals. Captain Louie Kirkman had 13 points and three assists, while Nick Lewis chipped in 12 points and six rebounds off the bench. Forward Tayo Oyefusi played just 28 minutes and only registered a single field goal attempt, but he pulled down 16 boards and dished out six assists in a big contribution to the win. The visiting Rockets were paced by US forward AJ Carr's 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Sydney Donaldson threatened a triple-double with 17 points, eight rebounds, nine assists and two steals. Trae Pemberton added 16 points and two assists, while Adrian O'Sullivan contributed nine points, five rebounds and seven assists.

Nottingham McDonald's Hoods 74 v 84 Worthing Thunder

Sunday afternoon's action tipped off with Worthing Thunder making the trip up to the East Midlands to face Nottingham, as the south coast side hoped to keep pace with Team Solent near the top of the table. The visitors started sharply, reeling off a 6-20 first quarter that put them firmly in the drivers' seat. The hosts would manage to trim the deficit to single digits just before the half, but a composed third quarter saw the Thunder pull away again to lead by 20 early in the fourth. The Hoods weren't down and out just yet, as they pulled off a 20-7 run midway through the final stanza to keep things interesting. Their best efforts wouldn't be enough however, as Zaire Taylor was able to ice it at the line down the stretch.
Alex Owumi starred for the Thunder on this occasion as he poured in 30 points, with three rebound, four assists and two steals, while Taylor provided support with 18 points, six rebounds and two assists. Tom Ward added 12 points and Ishmael Fontaine came off the bench to chip in nine points and three rebounds. Cole Welle paced the Hoods with 24 points and 17 rebounds, while David Watts had 22 points, including four triples, to go with two rebounds. Euan James came off the bench to add 10 points and four rebounds, rounding out the double figure scorers in the loss.

Barking Abbey Crusaders 89 v 76 Manchester Magic

The Crusaders and Magic completed their double-header weekends with a Sunday afternoon match-up in East London, with both sides desperate for a win against a fellow league struggler. The game started out close, before Manchester were able to seize control in the second quarter as they pulled away for a 40-45 half-time lead. Barking Abbey came out of the half fighting and the wheels began to fall off a little for the Magic, as the hosts reeled off a 31-12 quarter to establish a comfortable lead. The Magic battled hard down the stretch but the home side kept them at arms length throughout as they picked up an important win, going 2-0 over their home back-to-back and improving to 3-5. The Magic drop to 1-6 as their struggles continue.
Jonathan Brown led his Barking squad with 17 points and two rebounds, while Ade Adebayo and Spyridon Kapsalos chipped in 14 points apiece. Adebayo also had two rebounds, two assists and five steals to go along with his scoring effort, while Kapsolas contributed two rebounds and three steals. Nathaniel Powell and Carl Ntifo added 11 and 10, respectively, to round out the double figure scorers for the Crusaders. Meanwhile, the visitors were led by 21 points and three rebounds from import big man Jonathan Barnes, supported by 16 points from captain Daniel Pilkington. Loick Pouale chipped in 13 points, while Josh Houghton came off the bench to add 12.
Magic Coach Aurimas Verbukas spoke after a disappointing double-header, "Another difficult weekend with two losses, but we are not far away from where we see ourselves being competitive. We are getting better every single day and there's a lot of positive things happening on the floor. We are now fully focused on games ahead, as we begin preparing for Derby."
Essex Leopards 85 v 69 Reading Rockets

Completing their home back-to-back, the Essex Leopards came off their vital win over Leicester Warriors and headed straight into a crucial National Trophy match-up on Sunday evening. The visiting Reading Rockets just needed a win to secure a place in the semi-final as Pool C winners, but the Big Cats had other ideas. The hosts started confidently, using a 13-1 run in the middle of the first to take a 20-8 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Reading would not go down lightly as they fought back to cut the lead to just two points shortly before the half, but went into the locker rooms down 36-29. Another bright start to the half saw the home side pull away throughout the third period, as they built a 17 point lead heading into the final stanza. With the game going away from them, Coach Alan Keane emptied the Rockets bench in the latter stages as the Leopards held on for a vital win that keeps things interesting. The final Pool C match-up sees the Leopards take on Hemel Storm in January, where a win would see Essex through by virtue of their head-to-head tie-breaker over the Rockets.
The Leopards win was paced by captain Sam Newman's 24 points, two rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Asante Sandiford came off the bench to provide support with 17 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals. Findlay Wood added 15 points, four rebounds and two assists, with Lee Hodges chipping in 11 points and seven rebounds. Luke Mascall-Wright's all-round effort of 10 points, five rebounds and five assists rounded out the double digit scorers for the Big Cats. AJ Carr had 18 points, six rebounds and five assists to pace the Rockets, supported by 17 points, four rebounds and four assists from Trae Pemberton. Captain Danny Carter came off the bench to add 16 points and four rebounds in the Rockets' loss.
Leopards Coach Thomas Baker spoke following the win, "The game against Reading was by far our best defensive performance and potentially our best performance to date so far. Keeping them to eight points in the first quarter really set the tone for us and it helped us build our performance as the game went on."
"We will continue to get better and with the recent additions of KJ [Lee] and Asante [Sandiford], along with the committed development of the guys who have been here from the start - we are now starting to show what we could really achieve this year."
"I always knew we had these types of performances in us, the guys were excellent this weekend and we look forward to getting on the court together again as we look to build consistency," Baker summarised.

Bristol Academy Flyers kept up their winning ways in WNBL Division One, as they extended their win streak to seven games with a road victory over Southwark Pride. The loss sees Southwark drop back to .500 with an even 3-3 record, unable to really put together consistent form in the early season. Bristol got out to a good start in this one, as they led 4-13 after five minutes of action. The Pride would then be held scoreless for the remainder of the first, as the Flyers took a commanding 4-23 lead after ten minutes of play. The second stanza saw a little fightback from Southwark, who won the quarter 16-9 and trimmed the lead to 12 as the teams headed for the locker rooms. Coach Gareth Till must have had words with his troops during the break, as they Flyers poured in 30 points in the third quarter to lead by 32 and kill off the game as a contest.
Cristina Bigica exploded for 31 points, on 11-16 from the field, to pace her side in the win. Bigica added nine rebounds, three assists and two steals to her scoring outburst in an all-round performance. Flo Ward added 13 points, two rebounds and three steals, while Rebecca Cantin supported with eight points, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Amelia Sandie led the hosts with 12 points and two rebounds, while Maya Hyacienth added 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Jade Guidolin Duncan added 11 points of her own, along with three steals.

A solid start by the hosts in this one saw them lead throughout the early exchanges, but the Riders would storm back into the game to take control with smart play either side of the half. Coming out of the locker rooms after the interval, Loughborough went on a 10-2 run as part of a 9-21 quarter that all but decided the game. Both teams went deep into the benches late on, as the Riders showed their depth by only extending their lead down the stretch. The win sees Loughborough into the top four, their 4-3 record good for fourth place, while Barking drop to 2-6 as they hover above Team Birmingham.
Without Holly Winterburn who returned to WBBL action, the Riders were paced by 16 points apiece from Imogen Cook and Hannah Dawson. Cook added four rebounds and five assists, while Dawson added six rebounds and two steals to her scoring effort. Emma Cheetham shot an efficient 4-5 to add nine points, while Holly Wright chipped in eight points, three rebounds, four assists and two steals. Meanwhile, Teresa Da Silva came off the bench to pace Barking Abbey with 13 points, two rebounds, two assists and three steals, while Ann Sheaia led the starters with 10 points, two rebounds, three assists and two steals. Jolicia Cadogan chipped in nine points, while Loren Christie added eight.

To wrap up the WNBL Division One weekend, we head to Cambridge as Anglia Ruskin University played host to Sevenoaks Suns II. This contest was decided in the second quarter alone, as the teams went toe-to-toe for 30 minutes, but a disastrous second stanza for the Suns saw them fall behind for good. The Rhinos edged ahead after ten minutes, a close game in the early going, before they clamped down on defence and Sevenoaks couldn't get anything to fall in a quarter that finished 23-3 in favour of the hosts. With a commanding 20+ point lead throughout the second half, the Rhinos extended the gap to more than 30, before a valiant effort from the Suns down the stretch. The win sees Anglia Ruskin bounce back from their first league loss of the season last weekend, as they now hold a 4-1 record that is good for second place. The mixed form for Sevenoaks sees them drop to 3-4, now in seventh place in the standings.
The Rhinos were paced by 20 points apiece from Nadege Talva and Barbara Gonzalez Palacios, as Talva added five rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Gonzalez Palacios had nine rebounds and two assists. Najha Treadwell chipped in a double-double of 15 points, 10 rebounds and two assists, as Katarzyna Neininger also had an impressive double-double performance of 12 points, 17 rebounds and two assists. The Suns were paced by young star Katie Bennett's 16 points, while Olivia Partridge added 14 points and seven rebounds. Ellie Hutchinson was also able to chip in with seven points, three rebounds and two assists in the Suns' loss.

Greenwich Titans 75 v 88 East London All Stars

A battle of newly promoted teams saw East London All Stars grab a victory that keeps Greenwich Titans firmly rooted to the bottom of the standings, now reeling from a four game losing streak. The win for East London snaps their three game losing streak, as they improve to 3-4 on the season, good for sixth position in the standings. This match-up was closely contested throughout, with the exception of the third quarter where the All Stars blew the game open with a 14-3 run to end the period. The Titans made some headway into cutting into the lead in the fourth, trimming the gap to seven, but smart play down the stretch saw the All Stars pull away for good.
Kyle Gouveia poured in 32 points on 14-20 shooting for the visitors, adding 13 rebounds and two blocks on the way. Jonathan James supported with 16 points, three rebounds, eight assists and two steals, while Aaron Badibo had 15 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Max Denham rounded out the double figure scorers for Coach Dave Greenaway's side with 11 points, five rebounds and two assists. Ray Akpofure went two better than Gouveia's impressive scoring outburst, as he paced the Titans with 34 points, on 17-19 shooting from the floor, adding 16 rebounds and two assists. In what was much of a one-man show, Jake Murphy was the only other double figure scorer for Greenwich as he chipped in 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Myerscough College 60 v 76 Liverpool

An all-North West encounter got Myerscough College's double-header weekend underway, as the young side from Lancashire faced a tough ask with the visit of the undefeated league-leaders. The game got off to even start, with Liverpool edging ahead to lead by eight points at the half-time break. A 12-0 run to start the third period gave Liverpool a 20 point cushion, and the hosts were never able to cut the deficit to below 10 points as the game concluded. The win sees Liverpool extend their unbeaten start to the season as they sit atop of the standings with a 7-0 record. Meanwhile, Myerscough dropped to 4-3, remain in third place with the second half of their back-to-back still to come.
A balanced attack got the job done for Coach Delme Herriman's side, as Mark Rangeley led proceedings with 18 points, eight rebounds and four steals, with Jack Hudson, David Ulph and Kenny Ogunneye all adding 15 points. Ulph pulled down 18 rebounds to go with his scoring effort, while adding four assists and three steals. Hudson chipped in four assists and three steals, while Ogunneye grabbed 10 rebounds and five steals. Rayon Brown led the hosts with 13 points, two rebounds, two assists and four steals, while David Walsh came off the bench for 13 points of his own, adding two rebounds. A quiet afternoon for Mate Okros saw him go 4-15 for eight points, five rebounds, two assists and four steals.

Westminster Warriors 82 v 74 Ipswich

Westminster Warriors continued their good recent form as their winning streak increased to five games on the bounce since an opening day loss. The hosts started well in this one, putting together a good first half performance to lead by 17 points at the half. The second half went the way of the visitors, as Ipswich were able to chip away at the lead - but in the end didn't have quite enough to close the gap. The Warriors maintain their second place position in the standings as pressure builds on Liverpool to stay perfect, while Ipswich drop to 2-5 in eighth place.
Juan Manning led all scorers as he had 22 points to pace Westminster, supported by 18 from Guy Rundle and 13 from Mantas Adomaitis. Ipswich were led by a 20 point effort from Eivydas Aleksa, while captain Colin Dockrell had 17 and young Ethan Price chipped in 10.
London Greenhouse Pioneers 69 v 43 London Westside

London Greenhouse Pioneers got the best of their cross-capital rivals London Westside as a staunch defensive effort got the job done in a low-scoring affair. The game was over by half-time in this one, as the defensive effort of the Pioneers held Westside to just 16 points in the first 20 minutes. A 43-16 lead heading into the interval was insurmountable, but the visitors competed better in the second half and were able to edge the final stanza by a single point.

Teni Mango contributed 10 points, while Kyle Diaz, Francesco Rinaldi and Luca Bastoni chipped in seven points apiece. The Westside effort was led by Patrick Omigie's nine points and seven rebounds, as Zaid Amini matched his scoring output to add nine points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Myerscough College's tricky back-to-back against the top two teams in the league came to a disappointing conclusion as they suffered their second loss in as many days at the hands of second-placed Westminster. The win sees the Warriors stay within touching distance of Liverpool at 6-1, while Myerscough even out at 4-4. Myerscough got the better of a balanced first half in this one, holding the lead for much of the first 20 minutes, before heading into the locker rooms tied at 46-46. The hosts would go on to lead for much of the third, before a 7-2 run to end the period gave Westminster their first lead of the second half. Mate Okros hit a lay-up to see Myerscough trailing by five with 4:32 to play, but Westminster went on a 12-1 to kill the game off as they secured the vital win.
Justin Hitchman led all scorers with 32 points, seven rebounds and two steals, with ample support from player-coach Jon Johnson who had 21 points, 12 rebounds and three assists. Juan Manning also chipped in 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals for the visitors. Myerscough were led by 24 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and two steals from Mate Okros, while David Walsh knocked down three triples on his way to 17 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Derbyshire Arrows 68 v 79 London United

London United made the trip up to Dronfield Sports Centre to wrap up the NBL Division Two weekend, with their hosts hoping to pick up their second win of the campaign after a tough start. The opening exchanges were closely contested as the lead changed hands, before United pulled away the end the first quarter. An offensive explosion from the visitors saw them put 30 points on the board in the second period, including a 17-8 run as they headed into the half. United's double figure lead was never challenged as the visiting side held off a late challenge from the Arrows to pick up their third win of the season.
The United win was paced by Modestas Krasauskas who came off the bench for 18 points, six rebounds and two steals, while Sarunas Antanavicius added 15 points, three rebounds, two assists and five steals. The starters were led by Marius Talijunas' double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds, as Tomas Butrimas chipped in 10 points and six rebounds. Meanwhile, there was another double-double for Joseph Baugh who led the Arrows with an all-round 21 points, 16 rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks; but struggled looking after the ball as he racked up nine turnovers. Matt Wilson added a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Callum McKenzie added eight points, nine rebounds and three assists.
