Basketball England is pleased to continue the announcement of the winners of the 2019 Region Volunteer Awards with the South.
The annual volunteer awards programme sees nominations gathered from the public across the 10 English Regions, with winners selected in partnership with the Regional Management Committee Chairs.
Amongst the winners are Alan Keane (Coach of The Year) whose introduction of coaching groups and use of social media to share coaching content has been hugely impactful for the Reading Rockets as well as the Great Britain Under-18 Men, leading to a memorable win over Serbia in overtime at the European Championships and an eventual 8th place finish in Division A.
The Young Volunteer of the Year goes to Craig Colley for his consistent hard work, from being on hand with water at men’s games to table officiating, recording school games and more, Craig goes above and beyond for his club whilst still finding the time to play at the under-18 age group as well.
Also recognised is Chris Bunnett (Volunteer of The Year), Chris has been involved in Basketball for fifty years, following on from his service to Army Basketball where he was instrumental in creating many of the tournaments that are still running. Playing, coaching, refereeing and training officials for the Army for over twenty years, Chris has more recently continued to provide invaluable support for basketball in the South region. He officiated for many years at the highest level and trained and mentored many NBL officials that are still officiating today. Giving that little bit extra to ensure that the highest possible standards are met, his support for basketball continues to be of the highest possible standard and is greatly appreciated by all those he comes into contact with through the game.
“Well done to Chris, Craig, Alan and all the volunteers who have been recognised today” said David Butler, Delivery Director for Basketball England. “There are some worthy winners within the South region and I’m delighted that their efforts have led them to one of this year’s awards.”
All of the winners in each category at regional level will be reviewed by a panel, with three nominees for each national award being invited to the Basketball England Annual Volunteer Awards Dinner which takes place on Saturday 7th September in Manchester, where the winners of the national awards will be announced and presented.
