COACH SPOTLIGHT
Name: Josh Goddard
Team: Worthing Thunder - NBL Division 1
How would you describe Worthing’s season so far, including the highs of winning a the National Trophy, and the lows of being pipped to a league title?
Our season has been full of excitement from the highs of winning the trophy to the lows of narrowly missing out on the league. Obviously there were things we should have controlled better earlier on in the season to increase our chances of winning the league however on the whole our successes in all competitions throughout the year have been a huge step in the direction the club is aspiring towards
What would a victory next Sunday mean for the Thunder programme and the work you’ve done so far?
A victory on Sunday would mean everything, not just to us as players but to our wonderful fans and all the people behind the scenes that enable us to play the game we all love! At the beginning of the season our goal was to win trophies, this final win would be a testament to the hard work and dedication that has been put in all season
Zaire Taylor and Alex Owumi have both enjoyed solid season’s for the Thunder. What are they like to work with? What do they bring to your team?
Working with players of Zaire and Alex’s calibre is a privilege to anyone, especially myself in my first season as a player-coach. Not only do they bring experience and extremely high skill sets, they also bring the habits that often go unnoticed. I believe it is these attributes that have not only helped myself develop as a player and as a coach but has bettered the team as a group
Do you have any long terms goals for your programme?
Our long term goals for the club are to continue to improve both on and off court. Thunder had not won the Division One championship for a number of years until last season and this is something that we must look to maintain if not improve if we are to develop further as a club. Our community programmes are going from strength to strength and clearly we would wish to continue to develop our reach in this area
As a coach, what are you working towards personally? What does the future hold for you?
As a coach, I personally am looking to improve the balance between my playing and coaching career. I believe that this season has been the first of many steps for my future in the game and I am extremely excited to see what this journey has in store for me
