COACH SPOTLIGHT
Name: Steve Nelson
Team: Sussex Storm - Under 14 Boys (South Premier)
What brought you into coaching?
Originally, to give something back to a sport that I had got a lot out of… and the opportunity to help my children Luke and Kyla to learn and love the game.
What were your original thoughts when you moved into coaching?
I wanted to get across the fundamentals of the sport. Coaching is also about understanding what’s going on in children’s heads – motivations, commitment, learning.
What did you find most interesting to learn as a coach?
How to teach the fundamentals of the game, in a way that works for the young people I am coaching.
What was the most rewarding part of your coaching journey so far?
Seeing players improve, helping a number of players play for regional and national teams, and working with other coaches to develop a club philosophy.
Which parts of coaching do you like the most?
Games – a chance to put our learning to the test.
Where are you now? How are you using your coaching skills?
Working with the Storm Under 14 Boys team in the NBL.
What is your coaching niche and why did you choose it?
I like coaching kids that want to get better. Mainly at Junior NBL level, any age group, both boys and girls.
What is your coaching vision for the next 2 years?
I’m retiring from it!
What is your favourite coaching question from athletes?
I am not sure that I have one, it is individual and situational.
What advice do you have for those coaches currently in training?
When coaching children, forget about winning or losing – focus on individual and team improvement.
What legacy would you like to leave behind you?
Players who understand the fundamentals and have a passion for basketball.
