PLAYER SPOTLIGHT - David Watts, Nottingham Hoods

The final NBL Weekend Takeover for the 2018-2019 Season will take place on 30/31 March, and will see Nottingham Hoods take the reins of the NBL Instagram story.

We caught up with Hoods' David Watts of their takeover weekend, in our final Player Spotlight feature.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT

Name: David Watts

Team: Nottingham Hoods - NBL Division 1 (Men)

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I grew up in a small mining village just outside of Sherwood Forest with my parents and younger sister and younger brother. I moved to Nottingham when I was 17 to join a basketball academy and have played professionally in Europe and the UK for almost 18 years.

What brought you to the NBL in the first place?

I was recruited to play for South Nottingham Academy in 2000 and played NBL3 at first but we got promoted to NBL2 the following year.

What was your first impression of the NBL? How has that changed?

The rules have changed quite a lot and the 3-point line used to be a lot closer too. D1 is as competitive now as it was when I first joined in 2006. There are a lot more basketball specific venues around the UK nowadays and there are also a lot more academy and junior players playing valuable minutes for clubs and it’s great to see.

What changes have you noticed in yourself since joining the NBL?

I have learnt a lot from the people I have met throughout my career and have been lucky enough to meet some very supportive and honest, life long friends. All have taught me valuable lessons, on and off the court, that have changed my perception and outlook on a number of things. I have changed so much since the beginning of my career up to this point it’s hard to write them all down.

What are you working on right now, what are your current goals?

I currently work at an Alternative Provision School, mentoring students with Special Educational Needs. It was always my plan to return back to Nottingham and help young people to the best of my ability. My goals are to help as many young people achieve their goals as I can and empower them to find their way.

What is your favourite NBL memory?

I have so many great memories, winning national titles, MVP awards etc. But the two that really stand out are the undefeated season with Reading Rockets and gaining promotion to NBL1 with my hometown Nottingham Hoods.

What advice would you give someone who is just getting started in basketball?

Play as much as you can, set goals and find a good coach and like minded friends and work smarter than everyone else.

What do you like to do outside of basketball?

I like to spend time with friends and family. I like movies and watching live music. I also like to do a little photography and do some mountain biking too.

Finally, who is your favourite British basketball player and why?

Too many to mention. I’m a big fan of anyone who is passionate, dedicated to their craft and works relentlessly to get better.
