Loughborough Riders 92 v 74 Barking Abbey Crusaders

Loughborough Riders followed up their impressive win in the National Cup final with a bounce back win in NBL Division One as they defeated Barking Abbey Crusaders on their home floor. The victory saw the Riders improve to 9-4 on the season, continuing their plight to break into the top four - with games in hand over all the teams above them in the standings. This contest didn't go all the Riders way however, as the Crusaders put in a solid first half performance to hold a narrow lead for much of the early exchanges. A bright run by the hosts to end the half put them ahead as the teams headed for the locker rooms, before continuing their run into third quarter to lead by 17 as the game entered the final stanza. The Riders emptied their bench late on as they cruised to victory, despite a valiant effort by Barking to contest down the stretch.
Niall Harris went an efficient 8-9 from the floor, and a perfect 4-4 from the line, to lead the Riders with 22 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals. Lucien Cristofis, NBL Player Spotlight athlete for this week, had 21 points in support for Loughborough, going 8-8 from the foul line and adding three rebounds. Alex Roberts finished with 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Hosana Kitenge had 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Kyle Carey, recent newcomer to the Crusaders, seems to have acclimatised to his new surroundings as he led Barking with 20 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals, shooting a perfect 9-9 from the floor. Jonathan St Hilaire came off the bench to add 13 points, while Nathaniel Powell had a near double-double of nine points and seven rebounds. Ade Adebayo added a near double-double of his own from the back-court, finishing with eight points and seven assists.

Reading Rockets 63 v 89 Leicester Warriors

A Saturday afternoon matchup at Rivermead Leisure Complex went against the form book as top five side Reading Rockets, without starting point guard Adrian O'Sullivan, were downed by a big performance from Leicester Warriors. An even first half saw Leicester edge ahead by single digits, holding an eight point advantage at the half. A bright run midway through the third saw Leicester extend their lead to 16 as the game headed into the final stanza. In need of a spark to ignite their comeback, the Rockets were unable to cut into the deficit as the fourth quarter began, with the visitors putting in a composed performance to pull away and lead by as many as 30 points in the closing stages. Leicester improve to 6-11 on the season as they gain some breathing space over the bottom two, now just one game back of the eighth and final playoff spot.
Raphell Thomas-Edwards had an eye-catching stat-line as he led the East Midlands squad to victory, pouring in 34 points, 18 rebounds, two assists and five steals. His dominant performance was supported by 22 points from Taylor Johnson, who added seven rebounds and four assists, while Martyn Gayle had 18 points and seven rebounds of his own, knocking four triples on the day. Lamin Willan rounded out the double figures scorers for Coach Karl Brown's outfit as he chipped in 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Meanwhile, it was the same story as a week ago for the Rockets, as US imports AJ Carr and Trae Pemberton had their way, with little support from the Reading roster. Carr led the effort on this occasion with 24 points and three rebounds, while Pemberton added 18 points and six rebounds. Sydney Donaldson struggled from the floor, shooting 2-13, but had a near triple-double as he contributed eight points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Manchester Magic 69 v 97 Team Solent Kestrels

Team Solent Kestrels repeated their dominant performance against Nottingham McDonalds Hoods as they defeated Manchester Magic by the exact same scoreline as their victory in the East Midlands a week ago. The dominant win for the Southampton-based side didn't come as easily as the final score would suggest, as they had to overcome a good start by the hosts to fight their way back into the game. Manchester got the best of the early stages, leading by as many as eight points in the opening exchanges. The league-leading Kestrels regained their composure in the second quarter, as they took over just before the half to open up a double-digit lead when the teams headed for the locker rooms. The Kestrels never looked back, as they took control of the second half, as the Magic ran out of gas as the contest progressed.
The Kestrels US imports combined for 43 points, as Travis Charles led the south coast squad with 22 points, six rebounds and two assists, while Herm Senor II added 21 points, four rebounds, nine assists and three steals. Chris Scarlett came off the pine to knock down five triples as he added 15 points and three rebounds, while Elliott Dadds had an all-round effort of 13 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals. Rounding out the double-digit scorers was captain Louie Kirkman who chipped in 10 points, eight rebounds, two assists and three steals. Manchester were led by a strong performance from big man Richard Bell who led all scorers with 23 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Ryan Lewis had 20 points, five rebounds and three assists, as the only other double figure scorer for Coach Simon Fisher's side. Andre Gayle contributed nine points, while big man Jonathan Barnes had eight points and eight rebounds.

Hemel Storm 85 v 79 Team Newcastle

Hemel Storm trailed early on, but put together a strong third quarter performance to give themselves the breathing room needed to pick up an important win against fellow bottom three side Team Newcastle. The visitors started the brighter in this one, as Coach Ian Hewitt's side pulled away for an early 10 point advantage midway through the first quarter. A solid end to the period saw Hemel regain their composure and tie things up throughout the second; the lead changing hands on numerous occasions. Edging ahead to lead by five at the half, it was the third quarter that saw Coach Robert Youngbloods' side open the floodgates as they poured in 28 points to lead by as many as 20 at times. Coach Hewitt and his side weren't down and out however, as they dropped 31 points of their own in a hectic fourth quarter that saw the lead cut back to single digits. The inside pairing of Leome Francis and TrayVonn Wright scored the final eight points of the contest for the Storm, as they kept Newcastle at arms length for a crucial result on their home floor.
Storm's new big man did much of the damage as Wright pulled down a double-double on his debut, recording 20 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Meanwhile, inside partner Francis added 15 points, six rebounds and two steals. It was Blayne Freckleton who led all scorers from the back-court with a game-high 21 points, four rebounds and two assists, while Bode Adeluola finished with 10 points, three rebounds, five assists and two steals. Eric Stafford paced Newcastle with a team-high 20 points and 10 assists, while Fran Urli came off the bench to add 15 points and four rebounds. Alei Wol and Onyekachi Nzerem chipped in 12 points apiece, with Wol adding nine rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Nzerem pulled down five rebounds. Ben Seipt rounded out the double digit scorers with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Derby Trailblazers 102 v 93 Essex Leopards

A high-scoring game in the East Midlands saw Derby Trailblazers crack triple digits for just the second time this season, having put 116 on Bradford back in October. The visiting Big Cats had a strong start to the game as the contest swung back-and-forth early on. Holding just a two point advantage in a closely contested first half, the third period saw Coach Matt Shaw's side get off to a strong start as they got into a flow on the offensive end. The Blazers' 34 points in the quarter was nearly matched by a 29 point effort from the Leopards, but Derby were able to pull away for a decisive lead, despite the visitors' best efforts down the stretch. A dunk from Lee Hodges brought Essex with four points with just over seven minutes to play, but that was the closest it would get as Malcolm Smith and Matt Ward-Hibbert took over late on with a flurry of scores.
Smith started on the bench for Coach Shaw, but played his usual role as the go-to guy for the Blazers, dropping 38 points, five rebounds and three steals. Matt Ward-Hibbert had 26 points of his own, to go with two rebounds, two assists and four steals. Tre-Shawn Wilford finished with a near triple-double of 18 points, nine rebounds, three assists and an impressive eight steals, while Isa Brandon was inserted into the starting lineup to chip in 11 points, two assists and two steals. A balanced scoring effort in the loss saw five Leopards hit double figures as they were led by an all-round effort of 19 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, five steals and two blocks from captain Sam Newman. Big man Lee Hodges had 16 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and two blocks, while Asante Sandiford finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Rory Winter came off the bench to chip in 15 points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals, as Findlay Wood was the fifth double-digit scorer with 11 points, three rebounds and five assists.

Worthing Thunder cruised to their fourth league win in a row on Saturday night, as a solid performance on both ends saw them repeat their recent National Trophy semi-final triumph over the Bradford Dragons. The visiting side got the best of the early exchanges, before the Thunder unleashed a 34-11 second quarter that extinguished the Dragons' flames. A strong end to the third period saw Bradford cut into the deficit somewhat, but the game was over from the early stages in this one, as Worthing moved to 13-3 on the season.
Jorge Ebanks knocked down six three-pointer on his way to 32 points to lead Worthing, with five rebounds, six assists and three steals to go with his scoring effort. Zaire Taylor went one better and had seven made triples on the night, for a near triple-double of 21 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Alex Owumi knocked down from five of his own from deep as he added 19 points, seven rebounds and two assists, while captain Brendan Okoronkwo finished with 11 points, three rebounds and two assists. A rough night for Bradford was led by Rafael Saipe's 19 points and five rebounds, while big man Ricky Fetske finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Loughborough made it two wins from two in their home back-to-back as the East Midlands' side improved to 10-4; picking up a second victory by the exact same scoreline as their triumph over Barking Abbey. The game quickly got away from the Hoods, as the Riders opened up a 10 point lead early in the first quarter. Nottingham did fight back to lead at one stage in the second, before a dominant third period on the offensive end saw Coach Mark Jarram's side pull away for good. Leading by 16 heading into the final stanza, the bench got involved for the Riders as they cruised to victory in front of their home fans.
As has been the story on many occasions this season, the Riders got things done by committee in this one. Alex Roberts led all scorers to pace a balanced effort with 22 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Lucien Cristofis had 18 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Niall Harris added 11 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals. David Forsyth and Kyle Jimenez came off the bench to chip in 10 points apiece. Delaney Powell led Nottingham with 20 points, two assists and five steals, while Luke Mitchell supported with 18 points and two assists. Cole Welle chipped in 16 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals, while big man Andrej Slavik finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Worthing Thunder 109 v 114 Hemel Storm (2OT)

Worthing Thunder could not complete their home double-header with a second victory as Hemel Storm picked up a second win in as many days; taking home a big upset win in probably the game of the weekend. Hemel took control of this one early on as they edged ahead and held their narrow advantage for much of the first 25 minutes of the game, before Worthing came storming back to regain the lead heading in the final stanza of regulation. The hosts may have thought they'd grabbed the win as they led much of the fourth, and Zaire Taylor gave them an 85-81 lead with three minutes to play. TrayVonn Wright quickly responded with a three-pointer, and two minutes later it was Wright again who would tie things up at 88-88. Bode Adeluola's lay-in gave Hemel a 88-90 lead with 35 ticks to play, but Jorge Ebanks came through in the clutch - tying the game with 22 seconds to play, before Adeluola's game-winning triple attempt didn't go down.
The lead changed hands numerous times in a competitive overtime period, and Jorge Ebanks looked to have been the hero again when he went two-from-two at the foul line to give Worthing a 98-97 advantage. Blayne Freckleton responded with a huge triple, to give Hemel the 98-100 lead, before Thunder captain Brendan Okoronkwo tied the game at 100-100 with a lay-up. Ebanks had two more looks from deep to close out the period, but couldn't get either to fall - seeing the game go into double overtime! Foul trouble was the story of the second overtime period, with both teams in the penalty it was time to take advantage at the free throw line. Hemel went 10-12 from the stripe in the final five minutes, a crucial contribution to their final tally as they made the foul shots they needed down the stretch to pull away and record an impressive victory. Worthing now fall into the chasing pack at the top, tied on four losses with a 13-4 record, while Hemel's double victory weekend pulls them out of the bottom two for the first time this campaign.
Hemel guard Bode Adeluola played a full 50 minutes of the contest and led his side with 41 points, shooting 15-19 from the floor and 9-11 from the foul line, along with 11 rebounds, two assists and two steals. Blayne Freckleton added 18 points and seven rebounds, while Leome Francis finished with a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds. TrayVonn Wright chipped in 14 points, eight rebounds and two assists, while Levi Noel recorded 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Zaire Taylor finished with a triple-double of 33 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists and two steals in the loss, while Jorge Ebanks had 32 points and 12 rebounds. Brendan Okoronkwo recorded 15 points, eight rebounds and two assists, while Alex Owumi chipped in 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Kevin Moyo rounded out the double digit scorers with 10 points, three rebounds and three steals.

Essex Leopards 83 v 75 Manchester Magic

A much more competitive game than their contest the night before against Team Solent saw Manchester almost pick up an important result on the road, as Essex pulled away in the final stages. The Big Cats had it going early on as they led by 15 points int the second quarter, before Manchester rallied and were able to take a two point lead of their own just before the half-time break. However, the North West side weren't able to keep up their scoring effort as the Leopards gradually pulled away down the stretch, despite a Magic team that refused to give up. Splitting their games this weekend sees Essex stay even at 8-8 on the season, holding onto seventh place, while Manchester's woes continue as they dropped both in their double-header. Needing at least four wins with nine games left, the countdown is now on for the perennial powerhouse of the North West, if they are to maintain their Division One status.
Sam Newman led Essex once again with 23 points, six rebounds and four assists, supported by 17 points, six rebounds and three steals from Chuck Duru. Asante Sandiford finished with 17 points of his own, with seven rebounds and six assists. Jonathan Barnes led the Magic effort with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Ryan Lewis had 19 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Richard Bell continued his impressive form of late with a double-double 1of 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Andre Gayle chipped in 11 points, five rebounds and six assists. Youngster Ty Jordan came off the bench and didn't miss a shot as he contributed eight points in limited minutes.

Southwark Pride 63 v 75 Anglia Ruskin University

The first game of the WNBL Division One weekend to take place despite the inclement weather saw Anglia Ruskin University make the trip from Cambridge into central London and pick up an impressive road win. Southwark started the brighter of the two sides, looking to pick up a key result against the second-placed team in the standings. However, the Rhinos quickly gathered themselves and were able to go on a run just before the half that swung the momentum in their favour, the visitors' holding a six point advantage as the teams headed for the locker rooms. Despite a valiant effort in the second half, the Pride were unable to cut into the Anglia Ruskin lead, as the visiting side held on for a double-digit win that puts them just one game back of league-leaders Bristol Academy Flyers.
The Rhinos' victory was led by 22 points from captain Katrin Hulme, while Jazmin Gyulai and Najha Treadwell had 17 and 12, respectively. Nadege Talva chipped in 10 points and two rebounds, while Katarzyna Neininger came off the bench to add eight points. Southwark were led by a 21 point performance from Megan Haines, while Jade Guidolin Duncan Came off the bench to add 14 points as the only other double digit scorer on Coach Jackson Gibbons' roster.
Sevenoaks Suns II 68 v 61 Team Birmingham Elite

Team Birmingham Elite came up just short of doubling their win tally on the road on Saturday evening as they headed home to the West Midlands with a singe digit loss. The young Suns side took an advantage early on that would see them lead for the entire first half, before Coach Robin Hall's Elite side rallied and edged ahead themselves for much of the third stanza. A sharp run by Sevenoaks to start the fourth put the game to bed, as the hosts took a decisive lead that they would not relinquish down the stretch. Things got edgy late on when Jessica Cooper cut the Suns' lead to four at 65-61, but Zulieka Franklin and Asha Andrews kept their cool at the foul line to secure the win. The Suns now improve to 4-9 into seventh place, with a real chance of securing one of the final couple of playoff spots.
Asha Andrews starred in the win for Sevenoaks as she went 5-7 from outside the arc to lead all scorers with 27 points and two steals, while being supported by 16 points, eight rebounds, two assists and four steals from Ellie Hutchinson. Olivia Partridge also chipped in 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals for the hosts. Lucy Buxton had a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead Birmingham, while Jessica Cooper came off the bench for 16 points and five rebounds. A quiet evening for Rebecca Brindley saw her limited to eight points on just 1-7 shooting from the field, while she did add five rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Ipswich 81 v 67 Barking Abbey

While snow stopped play on Saturday at the Copleston Sports Centre, Sunday afternoon saw Barking Abbey able to make the short trip from East London out to Suffolk, but it was the home side who took the spoils. An even start to the game saw the lead change hands towards the end of the first period, but that would be Barking's only lead of the game as a dominant second quarter saw Ipswich open up a double digit lead and not look back as they extended their advantage after the half to cruise to their four successive victory; undefeated since the festive break and climbing the standings to fourth place.
The Ipswich victory was led by none other than Harriet Welham who had 33 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals, while Cameron Taylor-Willis added 16 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Danielle Cazey rounded out the double figure scorers with 11 points, four rebounds and four steals. Despite shooting just 2-8 from the field en route to four points, Esther Little made her impact on the boards in this one, pulling down an impressive 14 rebounds. Young forward Susannah Rafiu also made a statement in this one, coming off the bench to chip in eight points and five rebounds. Jolicia Cadogan led Barking with 21 points, seven rebounds and four steals, while Lilly Annim contributed 11 points and eight rebounds.

Sussex Bears 72 v 71 London United

A weekend of exciting games in NBL Division Two was kicked off with a one-point game on the south coast as Sussex Bears were able to come throw a tough matchup to pick up a key victory. Despite the close final scoreline, the only lead United ever held was the first of the game when Daniel Szatkowski knocked down two free throws on the first possession of the contest. The Bears soon took control in this one, with a 20-8 first quarter, before pulling away to lead by 15 midway through the third. The game looked to over when Joe Carter gave Sussex a 67-51 lead with just under five minutes to play, but an 15-2 run by United was sparked by some excellent play from Tomas Butrimas. Cordaris Townes stopped the bleeding with a lay-up to maintain the Bears advantage at 71-66 with 1:14 to play, before Dovydas Rudik replied with a triple to keep things interesting. With Sussex leading 71-69, Butrimas went to the line with a chance to tie the game, but split his free throws and United trailed 71-70. United had to foul and James Felstead stepped to the line, splitting his own pair of foul shots to see the Bears lead 72-70. Szatkowski managed to get himself to the line on the final possession with a chance to tie the game, making the first. United trailed 72-71 as Szatkowski missed the second to give Sussex the single point victory.
Cordaris Townes led all scorers with 26 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and two blocks, while James Felstead supported with 14 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. United had five players play the full 40 minutes of action, as they were led by 21 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals from Daniel Szatkowski. Tomas Butrimas finished with 20 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and five steals, while Khalil Afrasyab had 12 points, five rebounds and seven assists.
Ipswich 79 v 86 Derbyshire Arrows

Patrons Cup finalists Ipswich suffered a disappointing loss on their home floor on Saturday evening, as Derbyshire Arrows led from tip to buzzer to leapfrog the Suffolk-based side in the standings. Quickly jumping out to a 10 point lead in the first quarter, Derbyshire spent the rest of the game battling to maintain their advantage as Ipswich fought back time and again, but could never take a lead of their own. The Arrows hit crucial free throws down the stretch to secure the win, as Coach Jonny Kelly's outfit improve to 5-8 on the season and jump into eighth place.
Joseph Baugh had 29 points and 15 rebounds to lead Derbyshire, while George Brownell ably supported with 24 points and four rebounds. Callum McKenzie finished with a near triple-double of 13 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists, while Naphali Nembhard chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds. Jed Robinson paced Ipswich with 22 points, six rebounds and two steals, while Ben Winter came off the bench to add 20 points, five rebounds and seven assists. Ethan Price finished with 11 points, three rebounds, four assists and six blocks, while Stephen Hemmings chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds.
London Westside 74 v 76 Myerscough College

An extremely exciting game in the capital went right down to the wire as clutch plays down the stretch from Rayon Brown and Mate Okros gave Myerscough College a well-deserved win. Westside led in the early going on their home floor, before the visiting Myerscough squad took control and opened up a double-digit advantage for much of the second and third quarters. Westside fought all the way back to lead as they game entered the final stanza, before Myerscough pinched the lead back late on. David Walsh made two free throws to cut the Westside lead to 68-67, before Sanmi Fajana hit a triple to give Coach Neal Hopkins' side a 68-70 advantage. Back-to-back scores from R Wilson and Santiago Leon gave the hosts a 72-70 lead, but Walsh replied to tie the game once more. Leon stepped to the line with 24.8 seconds remaining and knocked down two free throws for a 74-72 advantage, but Mate Okros stepped up on the next possession and hit a clutch floater with 8.5 seconds remaining. A steal by Walsh on the inbound saw Rayon Brown head down the other end and get fouled, as he calmly knocked down both for the final advantage - Myerscough taking a hard-earned victory back to the North West.
Mate Okros led Myerscough with 22 points and two rebounds, while Sanmi Fajana had 14 points and four rebounds. David Walsh's late game heroics were a part of an 11 point, six rebound effort, with Callan Low also chipping in nine points and two rebounds. R Wilson had 26 points on 11-17 shooting to lead Westside, while DJ Morris had a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Santiago Leon was almost the hero late on in this one, but his 10 points and six rebounds just weren't enough to get the hosts over the line.

London Greenhouse Pioneers 68 v 88 Westminster Warriors

Sunday afternoon's action in NBL Division Two tipped off with Patrons Cup finalists Westminster Warriors picking up a blowout win over London Greenhouse Pioneers, the hosts' fourth consecutive loss in all competitions. After a dominant spell before the festive break which saw Greenhouse go undefeated through the months of November and December, they have come crashing down to Earth in recent weeks, falling to third in the race at the top of the Division Two standings and being knocked out of the Patrons Cup last weekend. This game was not a contest from the early stages, as Westminster quickly built a lead that they were never in danger of relinquishing. The narrow lead ballooned late in the third quarter as the Warriors did not look back in a dominant win.
Justin Hitchman led the cross-capital visitors with 20 points and four rebounds, while Juan Manning had 15 points, six rebounds, eight assists and three steals. Florian Damptey came off the bench to add 12 points, four assists and two steals, with player-coach Jon Johnson chipping in 11 points and three rebounds. Tosin Oyelese had 10 points and seven rebounds to round out the scoring. Meanwhile, Mariano Lussenhoff came off the bench to lead a balanced attack with 20 points, 12 rebounds and three steals, joined by fellow reserve Max Hufschlag in the top scorers as he added 13 points and four rebounds. Francesco Rinaldi and Adam Raji contributed nine points apiece, while Kyle Diaz and Mbombo Yegba both finished on eight points.
East London All Stars 72 v 81 Liverpool

The final game of the NBL Division Two weekend saw Liverpool extend their unbeaten run in the league to 12 games, as they continue to close in on an historic perfect season. The Merseyside squad didn't have things all their own way in this one however, as East London got the best of the early going to lead by six points in the first quarter. The lead changed hands numerous times throughout the second quarter, but it was in the third period that Liverpool really made their mark - a sharp run midway through the stanza built a double-digit lead that became insurmountable down the stretch for the All Stars.
Liverpool were without David Ulph as the back-court did the damagae - Jack Hudson led all scorers with 26 points, five rebounds, three assists and five steals, while Kaphel Ulett-Waul matched his scoring output with 26 points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals. Tyme Regent-Bascombe chipped in 15 points, five rebounds and two assists, as Uche Umekwe had a near double-double of eight points and 10 rebounds. East London were led by 21 points, three rebounds and four assists from Jonathan James, while Brian Nguru added 15 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Great win for the men on the road at East London All Stars. Jack and Kaphel with 26 points apiece but all eight players who travelled played their part today. Safe journey home team.
