WNBL Division One moves into its second week with four games spread across the 5/6 October. Defending playoff champions Anglia Ruskin got their season off to a flyer with an opening day win, but regular season title holders Bristol Flyers couldn’t do the same.
After failing to start the defence of their D1W regular season title with a win, Bristol Academy Flyers will be hoping that they can get their record back to .500 at the first time of asking.
That won’t be an easy task against the defending National Cup champions who finished 4th in the standings a year ago. Loughborough are always a tough side to face and despite the departure of the hugely talented Holly Winterburn and a number of graduating seniors, this is still a programme that retains quality in depth.
In their 85-68 loss to Ipswich last week, Bristol were out rebounded 64-46 and gave up 28 2nd chance points. That’s an area that Flyers’ Coach Vega Fuentes could look to focus on tomorrow.
2018/19 result – Bristol Academy Flyers 20 – 0 Loughborough Riders
Ipswich enjoyed a great start to their season with a win in Bristol thanks to 21 points from Danni Cazey. The Suffolk side head home this weekend to host 2016/17 playoff winners Southwark Pride.
Anglia Ruskin face a familiar foe in Thames Valley Cavaliers as these two sides played each other last weekend in the reverse fixture. Current WNBL Division One Player of the Week Katrin Hulme had a 19 point, 9 rebound, 9 assist performance in that game so the Cavs will need to find a different way to slow her down.
Reading sit at 1-0 and they’d love to build a winning streak to start the season. They host Team Solent on Sunday as the Kestrels get their 2019/20 campaign underway.
