GB Basketball via the three home countries of England, Scotland and Wales have the opportunity to offer the FIBA 3x3 Officiating Basics for free to our referees, plus anyone not currently officiating but with an interest in becoming a 3x3 referee.
The FIBA 3x3 Officiating Basics webinar would be hosted using the GoToMeeting platform online and would last for 2 hours. It prioritises the differences between 5v5 and 3x3 officiating and those who attend the webinar will be awarded a Certificate of Participation.
The training is free at the outset and as you progress there will be a greater commitment required to continue your development should you wish to, and is funded as part of FIBA's Youth Development Fund.
FIBA 3x3 is a hybrid of the 5 v 5 game and is expanding at a rapid rate. As with any game at the highest level there is a need for high quality officiating to support the development of the game for the athletes taking part. FIBA 3x3 will be a part of the Olympics going forward and will feature in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.
To be a 3x3 official at the highest level there is not the need to be a FIBA referee nor an official working in the top leagues of a nation. There is real opportunity for referees to develop a new basketball skill building on prior skills and knowledge.
All officials start at the same point and make progress according to their individual capacity. Currently, training is undertaken online and development and progress is made through a licencing ladder to a level where you can work internationally across FIBA zones.
From those who register their interest, the officiating departments of all three home countries (England, Scotland & Wales) will select 50 referees to take the course on behalf of GB Basketball.
The deadline for registering your interest for this exciting, free opportunity is Friday 31 July 2020.
Applicants will then receive further information by Friday 14 August 2020.
