Following last month’s launch of online lock down training for coaches, Basketball England has now taken steps to expand their development opportunities to referees, table officials and statisticians.
Entry-level referee and table official qualifications are now available for sign-up, suited to those who wish to officiate in schools’ competitions and junior central venue leagues.
Additionally, an Introduction To Statistics course has also been launched. The content should be of use to NBL clubs striving for consistent and accurate stats during games, which in turn can aid player tracking and analysis.
Basketball England’s Delivery Manager for Officiating Simon Unsworth said: “We are really pleased to be able to place our introduction level courses online and embrace a new way of learning and development.
“Virtual courses should allow us to support our club network and reach out to areas of the country that have traditionally struggled to train and retain officials and statisticians.”
Moving from face-to-face courses to online delivery means candidates can learn at their own pace and go back to any topic for additional learning should it be required.
This increased flexibility, coupled with a more modern teaching style, also aims to engage with a large number of new officials to help support clubs and competitions across the country.
Alongside a new way of learning, each course has also received a wholescale content review to ensure each qualification is as relevant and up to date as possible for aspiring officials and statisticians. The electronic format has an increased focus on video clips for key learning points.
Continuing the trend for online development, the first of six officiating and stats webinars is set to go ahead this week as Director of Officiating for EuroLeague Richard Stokes talks about Sequencing of Plays. The webinar kicks off at 7:00pm on Thursday 2 July, and is free to view.
