WNBL1 & WNBL National Cup recap: 4/5 November - live streams, stats and more

WNBL fans were able to enjoy a double dose of D1W and National Cup action this weekend.

There were some upsets in the round of 16, with more than one D2 side in the hat for the next round, whilst Bristol, Ipswich and more picked up solid league wins.

We take a look at all of the weekend's games below, with links to live stats and live streams at the bottom of the page.

Team Solent Kestrels (0-4) 31-55 Barking Abbey (2-3)

Barking picked up a valuable win on the South Coast this weekend, beating Team Solent Kestrels 55-31.

Both teams struggled from the floor (TSK 18% FG, BA 20% FG), but Barking's 20 steals created the additional shooting opportunities needed to get the job done.

Solent went scoreless across the second frame, losing the quarter 10-0 to head into the half down 20-13. BA would come out firing in the second half however, building some momentum behind an important 22 point, 16 rebound double-double from captain Ruchae Walton.

That output plus 13 points from Nicole Clancy were enough to seal the W for Barking in a low-scoring contest, keeping Solent rooted to the bottom of the standings in the process.

The hosts were led by 10 points and nine rebounds from Gabriela Kostova-Dobrova as the only player to make it to double-digits scoring.

Elsewhere this weekend

Bristol Academy Flyers (1-4) are winless no more, beating Loughborough Riders (3-3) 69-55 on Saturday.

A 21-9 third quarter proved pivotal to the visitors, with Cristina Bigica (25pts, 4 reb) coming up big for the Flyers to get them on the board.

Manchester Mystics' (3-2) suffered a heavy defeat on the road to Endeavour Ipswich Basketball (5-0), going down 102-41.

Mystics were forced into 45 turnovers across an outing to forget, with Harriet Welham (35pts, 8reb) once again playing well for the hosts.

Brent Bulls (3-0) were pushed hard by Anglia Ruskin University (3-3) but kept their unbeaten start to the season intact following a 58-53 victory.

Judit Fritz' 22 points were a big difference in a low-scoring game for the Bulls, with Kasia Neininger (14pts, 10reb) dropping a double-double for ARU.

Thames Valley Cavaliers (3-2) made it three in a row with a straightforward 93-55 win against City of Birmingham Rockets (1-3).

A 35-8 opening quarter set the tone for the contest as Chinwe Iwunze (20pts, 7reb) and Helene Trailin (14pts, 15reb) both played well for TVC.

Catarina Seixas top scored for CoB off the bench, she had 13 points in 17:08 of action.

WNBL National Cup

The quarter-final field is nearly completed, with seven cup games playing out yesterday.

Holders Thames Valley Cavaliers kept their repeat hopes alive with an 83-59 win against D2 Cobham Cobras.

Last season's finalists Reading Rockets saw off fellow D1 outfit Bristol Academy Flyers 65-57, thanks to 16 points from Parfaite Ando.

Brent Bulls retained local bragging rights against London All Stars with a 78-50 victory, with CoLA doing the same over Barking with a 70-58 final score.

A pair of D2 sides will be in the mix for the next round after Sheffield Hatters II upset D1 side Loughborough Riders 89-54, whilst Carolina Marques poured in 41 points as Worcester Wolves beat Bromsgrove Bears 71-63.

A fourth quarter fight back wouldn't be enough to keep Manchester Mystics' Cup hopes alive as they fell short against City of Birmingham Rockets, losing 68-57.

Anglia Ruskin University vs Endeavour Ipswich Basketball is now the round's only outstanding fixture and will be played on Tuesday 14 November with an 8pm tip.
