3x3: Team England hold their own at Scottish Summer Slam

A set of young England's Men and Women squads held their own in Scotland on the 8 June, as part of a 3x3 tournament involving the host, Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The Summer Slam event at Playsport in East Kilbride featured a 3x3 tournament, the Scottish Basketball Championships' All-Star event and the 2024 Hall of Fame induction, with Basketball England sending a strong U19 contingent north of the border.

Matt Goodwin, Lewis Obiorah, Joe Buchanan and Edward Onyia represented England on the Men's side, with Charlotte Devereux, Emily Taylor, Cleo Lewis-Gayle and Steph Oliver doing the same for the Women.

3x3 continues to rise

Goodwin and Buchanan have both enjoyed good seasons with Manchester in the EABL, the former stepping up to also log British Basketball League minutes with the Manchester Giants, whilst Buchanan has been a mainstay in NBL Division One for Bradford, picking up D1M's Young Player of the Year.

Obiorah was part of the Barking 3x3 team that won the recent Academy tournament in Manchester, and Onyia played a key part in steering Charnwood to an EABL title in 2023/24.

The Women's team featured four standouts from across the WEABL, with Taylor playing her part in leading Charnwood to a perfect regular season in the North conference.

Lewis-Gayle and Charlotte Devereux both enjoyed solid campaigns in the South, and the former also picked up minutes in the Women's British Basketball League for Oaklands Wolves.

Sheffield's Steph Oliver was one of the winners of the shooting contest at the recent Academy 3x3 finals.

The latest 3x3 competition feeds into what is becoming a busy summer for the shorter format of the sport.

BE recently hosted both Collegiate 3x3 and Academy 3x3 tournaments, both with an eye on generating future stars for the format. Dates and information for the latest summer of Ball Out 3x3 were also announced - the 10th year of its existence - with five qualifying events taking place across England in July and August.

The ever-increasing levels of 3x3 activity feed into Basketball England's 3x3 specific player pathway, with the GB 3x3 teams also set for a busy summer.
