Academies: EABL and WEABL structures for 2024/25 confirmed

The Elite Academy Basketball League (EABL) and Women’s Elite Academy Basketball League (WEABL) structures for the 2024/25 season have been confirmed.

Both elite academy leagues will continue with two-conference formats, dividing the country into Northern and Southern pools.

Charnwood College Riders and City of London Academy will defend their respective EABL and WEABL titles.

There are plenty of changes across both leagues as all four pools now consist of six teams, with Milton Keynes 5 Dimensions Breakers Academy and SGS College both added to the WEABL North.

Exciting contests

In the EABL, The Sheffield College (Northern Conference) and The Canterbury Academy (Southern Conference) have both now departed from the league, whilst SGS and MK5D are both joining Charnwood, Manchester, Nottingham and Sheffield in the WEABL Northern Conference.

The season will start on Wednesday 2 October with breaks in late October, late December/early January and mid-February for school holidays.

The post-season is scheduled to begin on 5 March 2025, with the Academy Finals taking place on Wednesday 26 March 2025.

Last year's top two in the EABL North, defending champs Charnwood College Riders and Myerscough, won't have to wait long to renew their rivalry as they clash in the North West on 9 October.

Last year's beaten finalists City of London Academy - Southwark also get their campaign underway on the 9th as they host cross-town rivals and last year's South runners up Barking Abbey.

WEABL newbies Milton Keynes and SGS College both start their schedules at home, with the Breakers entertaining divisional winners from 2023/24 Charnwood on 2 October, whilst SGS welcome The Sheffield College on the 9th.

The battles between Copleston and CoLA remain must-see viewing across the Academy landscape and other competitions as well. Those old foes lock horns in the WEABL South in London in mid-November before heading to Suffolk on 22 January 2025.

Basketball England’s Talent Pathway and Programme Manager Sam Messam said:

“The DiSE Partnerships are Basketball England-recognised Category 1 Academies. They provide talented 16-19-year-old athletes with access to elite training and competition settings in a bid to ‘stretch and challenge’ them towards improved performance.

"DiSE Athlete’s are measured against the five Pillars of Development (Game Aware, Skilled Technician, Persistent Performer, Physically Robust, and Basketball Committed) and undertake the DiSE Qualification in support of dual career aspiration.

"The qualification positions the DiSE Athlete towards becoming a professional basketball player, but also supports a range of other related opportunities across the sports industry."

About DiSE

DiSE Partnerships are elite academy environments supported by multiple partners (e.g. university, school, college, basketball club etc.) to deliver the DiSE qualification.

The DiSE Qualification forms part of BE’s England Development Programme (EDP) Framework, which is made up of four elements: the DiSE Qualification, a full-time programme of learning (i.e., A-Levels or BTEC study), Level 2 coach/official award, and participation in the EABL or WEABL.

The EABL was established in 2010/11 as a competitive outlet for DiSE students, with the WEABL beginning in 2015/16 with the same remit.
