Academy Leagues: Busiest Wednesday of the season so far - Week 3

The Academy Leagues begin building some steam this afternoon with six games planned across the EABL and WEABL.

City of London Academy - Southwark host Barking Abbey in both competitions, with Copleston at home to Oaklands in the EABL and WEABL as well.

SGS College and BMET City of Birmingham Rockets both get their seasons underway as they clash in the EABL, whilst Nottingham and Charnwood renew their rivalry in the WEABL North.

We take a look at all six games below.

EABL

SGS College and BMET City of Birmingham Rockets both get their 2024/25 campaigns underway today as the only action in the EABL North.

BMET welcome back a host of players for the year, including Corey Davis, Ethan Haywood and Larry Duru, but both Daniel Anumba and Josh White have now progressed to pastures new.

Philip Basioudis represents the programme's main addition as a member of the current talent pathway, and alongside fellow pathway standout Duru, much will rest on the duo's shoulders this season.

SGS haven't made the post-season since 2014/15 but will be hoping to break that streak behind the likes of returnees Marcos Perez-Tosca, Ashton Dyer and George Leite.

Kobe Hill (15.0PPG in 2023/24) and Callum Smart (11.3PPG, 9.9RPG in 2023/24) have both now left SGS however and will take plenty of production with them for the Bristol outfit.

Last year's beaten finalists City of London Academy - Southwark take their first steps towards repeating that kind of success in 2024/25 as they entertain five-time EABL champs and cross-London rivals Barking Abbey, who welcome back Ethan Conway, Amarlie Wilkinson and more as they look for yet another title in coach Rikki Broadmore's debut at the helm.

Copleston High School (0-1) are one side who have already begun their season, going down 110-73 on opening day to JMA Reading Rockets.

Despite the loss, the Suffolk programme still enjoyed 15 points from captain Matthew Liddamore and will be hoping for more of the same against an Oaklands Wolves side looking to get their season off to a successful start.

Liam Jefferson's roster involves a return for Larne Pratt plus the addition of junior talent Aydan Moloney, Enzo da Cruz Fatunda and Gavin Mitchell, though Bill Irvine, Oliver Rudsinski and Jack Clark have all now left the Wolves.

WEABL

Nottingham Academy Wildcats (0-1) lost out in their season debut a week ago against Manchester Mystics, with a narrow 62-59 scoreline.

The 2021/22 WEABL runners up will be hoping to bounce back from that one but it won't be easy against reigning North champions Charnwood College Riders (1-0), who welcome back a core of Charley Woodman, Emily Taylor, Lauren Cooper, Louise Fisher and Brooke Leo alongside talent pathway additions Rose Piskorska, Ruby Donnelly and Zara-Jess Gudza.

The two WEABL South games are a mirror of those in the EABL, with City of London Academy - Southwark entertaining Barking Abbey and Copleston High School (1-0) welcoming Oaklands Wolves.

CoLA are looking for a fifth title in a row and a sixth overall as the competition's most successful side, and they'll be able to once again call on the likes of previous winners Adaora Dioramma, Ayla Habbal, Lovell Green, Madi Warren and Debra Wilson-Osuide who all return from last year's roster.

Barking were surprisingly off the pace last term and will look for a bounce back with another year of experience for the likes of Alice Woodward, Jenna Ramen and Sharon Adejonwo.

Megan Verbeeten and Kamiliah Yakabu are BA's main additions for 2024/25, with both currently occupying a spot on the talent pathway.

Copleston are already up and running in their South title defence, easily beating JMA 81-22 to open the season.

Cerys Leach (20pts, 5reb), Kara Bassil (12pts, 11reb) and Maisie Keyes (14pts, 5reb) will all have a chance to build on their early momentum against an Oaklands side yet to get underway themselves.

Caitlin Ryan was huge for the Wolves in 2023/24 and returns once again, as do Ella Brown and Amye Swinney, though the likes of Cleo Lewis Gayle, Joanna Akoan, Stella Pisceteli and Rosie Porter have all moved on.

That gives the talent pathway trio of Darcey Woodman, Holly Welch and Paris Mitchell-Tyson a chance to shine for Shanice Beckford-Norton's side, with Oaklands trying to improve on their 5-5 record from a year ago.
