The organisation has expanded its reach since COVID-19, offering opportunities for all members of the Plymouth and South West community, particularly the older generation, to get involved in basketball and team sports, regardless of their abilities.
Its inclusive basketball programmes promote physical, mental, and social well-being for older adults, encouraging cardiovascular fitness, improved coordination and movement, whilst fostering a sense of belonging and purpose in later life.
“Since creating a safe environment for older members, we have successfully run weekly over-35s sessions and hosted a game with officials against local community club Cornwall Titans.
“This was the first over-35s game to be hosted in the South West and everyone had an amazing time. To be able to offer opportunities to those who have missed out on playing in local league basketball was just incredible. We are looking forward to creating more basketball playing opportunities for older players within the community.”
Additionally, the organisation runs inclusive women’s programmes - at grassroots and professional levels - to showcase their talents, develop skills, and pursue their passion for the game.
The work has included challenging outmoded gender stereotypes and promoting its female players into leadership roles, fostering a culture of belonging and inclusivity, as well as positive environments that help women grow, compete and thrive through the game of basketball.
“Without the support of the club and my amazing team-mates, I would not have had the confidence to believe I could achieve playing at international level.
"Since starting our women’s campaign in 2016, the impact has been amazing. When we started there was limited playing opportunities, now we have four women’s teams competing at local league level, and a women’s league in the Plymouth and District Basketball League. At Unity, we are very proud."
