BE Awards 2023: Bill Taylor Table Official of the Year

Helen Swift is the winner of the 2023 Bill Taylor Table Official of the Year award.

Swift has provided huge support to the East region, including Endeavour Ipswich Basketball Club, officiating at a variety of age groups from U12 through to U18, as well as in the NBL and WNBL.

As one of the few level three table officials in Suffolk, she is often required to support table duties most weekends of the season.

Despite this, she is always the first to support any requests for cover at short notice, ensuring games take place no matter the level.

A true professional

For those that know her, it isn't just about the work she does, but how Swift goes about the role of table officiating.

"Helen is always professional in her duties, she ensures correct procedures are followed by all other table officials appointed to her games as well," said local level three referee Craig Douglass.

"Without Helen's support this season, we would have struggled to fulfil table official duties to some key games.

"As a dedicated table official tutor, she has also played a critical role in the Suffolk REDD programme."

Aimed at recruitment, education, development and deployment of officials and making a faster and more efficient pathway for them to be supported into active officiating, the REDD programme covers both table officiating and refereeing, with Swift providing key guidance and mentoring to a number of newly qualified level two table officials.

Her impact on current officials as well as the next generation can't be overstated.

Swift received the award ahead of South West's Lindsay Chapman and Yorkshire's Gemma Stinson. Despite the strong shortlist, only one could take the national award, as the East representative came out on top.

Swift's recognition continues a two week period where national recipients of the 2023 Basketball England Awards are being announced.

Winners from across BE's ten regions were announced in March, with those recipients then shortlisted to narrow down the field for each national winner.

Swift and others will be recognised for their achievements over the coming days, leading up to another cohort of selections receiving the prestigious "Services to Basketball" award on Sunday, 9 June 2024.
