'Celebrating love of the game' - Yorkshire Masters building on initial success

After the inaugural Yorkshire Masters Basketball Tournament in 2023, the competition has gone from strength-to-strength in 2024.

Once again attracting hundreds of players, the tournament featured 23 teams from across England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Holland.

The tournament showcased competitive spirit and sportsmanship across three age categories, men’s over 40s, men’s over 50s, and women’s over 40s, with three champions crowned after some fierce competition at Allam Sports Centre in Hull last weekend (31 August, 1 September 2024).

In the men's O40s category, Newcastle's Bald Eagles Basketball Club emerged a winners, whilst the men's O50s went the way of local favourites Hull Hornets.

That just left Team Takeover, from London, to take the title in the women's O40s category, coming through on top in a competitive bracket.

Community spirit

The weekend wasn’t just about competition on the court; it also featured a lively social event. Players, coaches, and supporters enjoyed a 'Superheroes and Villains' fancy dress social at the Village Hotel, Hull. The event offered a fun and engaging way for participants to unwind and bond, further strengthening the community spirit that the Yorkshire Masters Tournament is known for.

In addition to the social festivities, a raffle was held during the event, with all profits generously donated to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Darren Sutcliffe, Chairman of the Tournament Committee, said:

"We are thrilled with the turnout and the level of competition we witnessed this year. The Yorkshire Masters is about more than just basketball; it’s about bringing people together, fostering camaraderie, and celebrating the love of the game at all ages.

"We’re especially proud to support the Yorkshire Air Ambulance through the proceeds of our raffle. We’re already looking forward to next year’s tournament and the continued growth of this fantastic event."

The Yorkshire Masters Basketball Tournament, which began in Halifax last year, has quickly established itself as a premier event in the Masters Basketball circuit.

With the success of this year’s tournament, plans are already underway for an even bigger and better event in 2025.
