EABL & WEABL Players of the Week 18/12/24 - Sanchez, Bateman end the year strong

The final instalment of Elite Academy action for 2024 is completed, but there's still time for one more pair of individual honours.

With a standout performance in Myerscough's win over BMet, Junior Sanchez collects his second EABL award of the season, while Kaiya Bateman starred off the Copleston bench in their latest WEABL win to get her first accolade of 2024/25.

EABL

Myerscough head into 2025 unbeaten following their 109-52 victory over BMet City of Birmingham Rockets, and young standout Junior Sanchez enjoyed a near-triple double in the sizable win.

Sixteen points and 10 assists went with seven rebounds and five steals, demonstration Sanchez's value at both ends of the floor for the North Conference leaders.

Going 6/11 shooting (54%) showed his efficiency, and committing zero turnovers in 24:28 of action, whilst dishing double-digit assists, shows just how good Sanchez was on Wednesday afternoon.

Speaking about the performance, he said: "The team performance was outstanding; we went into the game knowing what we had to do and we handled business, showing that our whole roster is ready to compete.

"Winning Player of the Week without my team-mates, who encourage me to keep working every day, would not have been possible."

Myerscough head coach Neal Hopkins added: "We're really proud of Junior and his development and I know he will extend this award to his team-mates, especially Luan Ferreira who really sparked our energy.

"It was a great win and a fantastic performance by Junior and the rest of the guys."

WEABL

Copleston moved to 8-0 on the season this week, thanks in part to a balanced offensive output led from their bench by Kaiya Bateman.

The young guard dropped a joint team-high 15 points on 50% shooting, and was a menace on defence with a game-high five steals.

Bateman added seven of her points plus a steal in the second quarter, which the hosts won 18-14 to enter the half up 47-25, setting the platform needed to ease through the second half.

Adding two rebounds and a pair of assists to her output, it was a solid day at the office for the Copleston guard.

Speaking about the award, Bateman said: "I am thankful to have won this award as it’s a great way to end 2024, and I'm grateful for my teammates as I wouldn’t win this award without them."

Copleston head coach Nick Drane added: "Kaiya has made a great start to her academy career and has developed massively in a very short space of time.

"She has the ability to impact a team in many different ways and this award is great recognition for her hard work."
