FocusHoops WNBL1 Team of the Week (November 9/10 2024)

Six games filled the D1W schedule last weekend, creating more than a few opportunities for Player and Team of the Week performances

That left FocusHoops' Darren Paul, a writer, commentator, podcaster and more, with plenty to mull over, including CoLA's win over rivals Ipswich, as he made his latest batch of selections.

The FocusHoops Team of the Week

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Megan Verbeeten – Barking Abbey, guard

37pts/10reb/2ast/5stl/26eff

Megan Verbeeten claimed Player of the Week honours thanks to her 37-10 double-double that saw Barking Abbey pick up their first win of the year, handing Loughborough just their second loss of the season in the process.

Verbeeten had the green light to shoot and made it pay, hitting eight triples, but it wasn’t just on offence where she made a big impact. With ten rebounds, (seven defensive) and a game-high five steals, she made a big difference in the upset road win for Barking.

Nina Wallace – Worcester Wolves, guard

24PTS/8Reb/6ast/6stl/35EFF

Nina Wallace led the Worcester Wolves past Reading Rockets with her 24 points performance, on 64% shooting.

Wallace did the bulk of her scoring inside the arc, but went 2/3 from downtown, and found teammates with six assists.

She had eight rebounds and six steals in a highly impressive display that stuffed the stat sheet in an important victory for the Midlands outfit.

Hannah Wallace - Bristol Academy Flyers, wing

21PTS/6Reb/4ast/3STL/27EFF

Bristol recorded back-to-back wins for the first time since February and Hannah Wallace was a driving factor in their latest success, bagging 21 points as Bristol downed Thames Valley 66-51.

Wallace’s 21 points came from 58% shooting, going 3/6 from beyond the arc and a perfect 4/4 at the stripe. She also dished the rock for four assists, pulled down six rebounds, grabbed three steals and sent one shot back in a fine display from one of Bristol’s leading lights.

Marlee Ball - Bristol Academy Flyers, guard

17PTS/15RBS/4AST/21EFF

Marlee Ball also came up big for Bristol as they took down TVC, finishing with a 17-15 double-double.

Ball knocked down four triples in the contest, a game-high in made threes, which was a major differentiator between the two sides.

Ball also pulled down 14 defensive boards, dished out four assists, and grabbed a steal in the game, all without committing a single turnover.

Across the board she had a major impact on a huge win for the Flyers.

Chloe Vella - CoLA Southwark Pride, forward

13PTS/11RBS/2stl/2blk/21EFf

Chloe Vella’s efficient scoring and care in possession helped CoLA take a big home win off the defending champions Ipswich.

Vella bagged a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double, hitting 57% from the field and draining one of her two three-point attempts.

The former Richmond Knights standout cleaned up on the defensive glass, with 10 boards, and she didn’t commit a single turnover.

Vella contributed defensively with two blocks and two steals, more than doing her bit to get CoLA a big win.

CoLA win top of table clash

In the match-up between the biggest rivals in the WNBL, it was the Londoners from CoLA who came out on top over the reigning league champions from Ipswich.

CoLA were paced in scoring by Debra Wilson-Osuide ,who had 19 points, and Chloe Vella on 13, with no other Pride player making it to double-digits in a contest where but one of their players chipped in two or more points.

Chandera Jones-Aryeh was just one assist away from a rebound-assist double-double as she found ways to contribute in a performance that speaks to the culture that CoLA have built through the season so far.

Ipswich were led in scoring by Harriet Welham, who equalled Wilson-Osuide with her own 19 points in the contest.

Worcester keep reading out of the win column

Worcester Wolves picked up their second win on the year as they downed Reading at home 81-62, enjoying a high-scoring outing from their starters.

Wolves had four starters in double-digits, led by Nina Wallace and her 24 points. Charlotte Finn and Carolina Marques both had 14 points and captain Shanice Turner added 10 more in an important victory for the newly promoted side.

Control of the ball was a big difference between the teams as Worcester only made 12 turnovers whilst Reading clocked up 27 in reply, allowing the Wolves to pick up 26 points off turnovers in a contest which was otherwise fairly evenly matched.

Mia Thompson put in a huge ironwoman performance playing the full 40 for Reading and leading them in scoring with 23 points, draining four triples.
