Players have been selected to represent Great Britain at the European Maxibasketball Championship from 21-30 June 2024 in Pesaro, Italy.

Following the final selection camp last weekend, here’s what Coach, CJ Lee said: “As both Programme Lead and Head Coach of the Female 40+ team, I'm thrilled to see the ongoing strength and growth of GB Maxibasketball. Since our successful World Championship debut five years ago, we've seen consistent progress, with five teams securing medals in Malaga 2022 and a highly competitive experience at the World Championships in Argentina just last August.

“This upcoming European Championships marks a significant milestone for the programme, with ten male and female GB Maxis teams – fielding some of their strongest squads yet. Each team is packed with experienced players, many of whom have competed at both national and international levels.”

GB Maxibasketball was established in 2017/18 and now operates as a national teams programme for players to attain GB representation. It is officially part of the Basketball England Talent Pathway and recognised by Basketball Scotland and Basketball Wales.

Programme Director, Sadie Mason MBE, said: “Our national governing bodies recognise the contribution that basketball makes to lifelong participation - regardless of age. This programme in particular aims to extend the playing career of former elite players who wish to compete against their international peers, in an environment supported by sports science professionals. It’s great that they can still benefit from the latest coaching, training, and education (physical and mental) opportunities offered by the GB Maxis performance programme, giving them the confidence to compete safely and as appropriate S&C to their age group.”

As part of the preparation for Pesaro, our SSM Team with support from coaching staff, undertook successful physical testing of all women’s teams at last weekend’s camp.

GB Maxis Head of Performance Support, Dr. Mark Dayson said: “As a performance programme, GB Maxibasketball is grateful for the support from the University of Greenwich in providing the specialised ‘Opto Jump’ equipment that affords us with reliable accurate data, and for the mentoring from Programme Leader for Sport Sciences to our S&C lead Michelle Ortega.

“The growing partnership and planned longevity of data collection is essential in understanding and supporting our athletes more effectively in the future.”

The squads include exciting new players in all age categories, as well as some experienced programme athletes and coaches that represented Great Britain at the World Championship 2019 (Espoo, Finland), European Championship 2022 (Malaga, Spain) and most recently the World Championship 2023 (Mar del Plata, Argentina).
