KitKing Trophy 2024/25: Derby's two-win weekend, Reading start hot

The 2024/25 season got underway with 13 KitKing Trophy games this past weekend.

The competition is organised by NBL1 Men's clubs in partnership with naming rights holder Kitking.co.uk and Basketball England, and the opening weekend saw holders Derby picking up a pair of wins against Bradford and Newcastle, while Reading passed the century mark not once but twice in their two victories.

The pool fixtures of the competition are set to be completed next weekend, with each team playing three games before the top two sides in each pool progress to the quarter-finals.

We take a look at all the action below from across the four groups.

Group 1

Reading came out and showed their intent on the new season, recording a pair of sizable wins.

Coach Nuruzade's side had no problem seeing off former D1 winners Team Solent Kestrels 120-74, with Simon Chamberlain (21pts, 5/6 3pt, 5reb) and Victor Olarerin (19pts, 3reb, 3stl) both doing the damage alongside a 41-21 third quarter.

Olarerin would also turn it on 24 hours later, dropping 30 points, including five triples, as the Rockets blew out Worthing 132-74. Up 71-35 at the half, the Rockets won at a canter to move top of the group after two wins from two.

It wasn't all bad news for Worthing as they edged Barking on Saturday, with Bode Adeluola's jumper with four ticks remaining giving the South Coast side an 88-86 victory.

BA had led by as many as 12 points early in the second half but couldn't hang on against Adeluola's 31-point outing.

Coach Vear's side would bounce back yesterday though to beat Solent 91-82 to keep their qualification hopes alive.

A 25-16 third quarter allowed the hosts to pull away in that one, with Amarlie Wilkinson (19pts, 9reb) showing his quality for BA.

Group 2

After an 8-16 record in D1 a year ago, Thames Valley suggested they may have turned a corner with two eye-catching wins this past weekend.

TVC announced the marquee signing of Justin Robinson late last week, and the two-time BBL MVP certainly settled into his new surroundings quickly as his 25 points helped the Cavs past London Elite 103-76 on Sunday.

Coach Banks' side also went to last season's D1M runners up Essex and came away with a W on Saturday, winning 84-76 to top the group in the early stages.

A 12-point, 13-rebound double-double from Deji Adekunle was enough to cancel out 25 points from Emmanuel Kanwei, with the visitors outrebounding Essex 50-38.

Former Trophy winners Hemel Storm got their off to a winning start, beating London Elite 96-68.

Elite led 24-17 after the opening quarter but faded from there, going down 52-26 across the second half as Veron Eze (19pts, 9/10 FG, 9reb) and Trent Monkman (21pts, 7reb) both came alive for the hosts.

Group 3

Newly promoted Bristol Hurricanes were given a rough introduction to life against the top flight as they were beaten not once but twice on the weekend.

Loughborough saw off the former D2 North winners 77-60 on Saturday, with Justin Hedley (17pts, 8reb, 5ast) the standout there, before a 94-74 road loss against Milton Keynes on Sunday.

New signing Adrian Scarborough (23pts, 9reb) enjoyed a solid home debut for the Breakers, supported by 10 points and seven assists from KJ Johnson.

It was Johnson who would be at the centre of MK's Saturday win as well, a narrow 93-89 triumph over City of Birmingham, as the talented guard dropped 21 points to go with five rebounds and five assists.

Zach Powell (18pts, 10reb, 6ast) played a great game for the Rockets and will be disappointed to be on the losing end, with Nate Robinson (18pts, 6ast) doing his bit alongside Johnson to get MK over the line.

Group 4

Defending champs Derby are off and running for the new campaign with a pair of wins.

They beat Bradford 95-85 on Saturday in a repeat of last year's final, before easing past Newcastle 91-66 to wrap the weekend.

Malcolm Smith's 30 point outing was enough to down the Dragons, whilst new man Mo Walker (23pts, 13reb) stepped up yesterday to down the North East side.

Nottingham Hoods began the Vladan Dragosavac era with a win, topping Newcastle 82-72 off the back of an 18 point, 13 rebound double-double from forward Greg Skoric.

Kayne King (17pts, 9ast) and Elliot Bailey (14pts, 6reb) both played well in support as a 25-16 final quarter broke open what had been a one point game going into the final frame.

Ronald Blain (22pts, 5reb, 5ast) was the standout for Newcastle.
