KitKing Trophy 2024/25: Eight teams advance as group stage ends

The 2024/25 KitKing Trophy quarter-finalists have been confirmed after another 11 games this past weekend.

Reading, Hemel, Milton Keynes and Derby Trailblazers have all progressed as group winners, with Loughborough, Thames Valley, Bradford and D2's Solent all moving on as well.

The competition is organised by NBL1 Men's clubs in partnership with naming rights holder Kitking.co.uk and Basketball England, and with the group stage now complete, the quarter-finals are ready to go for next weekend.

Before that though, we take a look back at all the action below from across the four groups.

Group 1

Reading Rockets made it three from three for a perfect group stage as they beat Barking Abbey 79-66.

A 22-7 third quarter broke the game open for the hosts, with Mitch Clarke (18pts, 4ast) continuing his recent good form.

Ethan Conway (21pts) led all scorers for BA, who were forced to settle for third place following a narrow three-way tiebreaker, missing out on a QF place by just five points.

Team Solent Kestrels were able to put last weekend's two defeats firmly behind them as they catapulted up to second spot following a 115-94 road win against South coast rivals Worthing Thunder.

Another contest with a pivotal third quarter, this one went the way of the D2 side as they took the frame 30-17 to provide a lead they would never relinquish.

Winning the rebound battle 55-30, Solent leant on the production of Isa Brandon (24pts, 10reb, 6ast), Ash Briggs (15pts, 12reb) and Andre Arissol (18pts, 12ast, 7reb) to cancel out a 40 point outing from Worthing's Bode Adeluola, which included five of six threes and a perfect 9/9 from the foul line.

Group 2

Hemel Storm are Group 2 winners, but it took a three-way tiebreaker to split the reigning playoff champs, Thames Valley and Essex Rebels after another quality weekend of action.

Storm picked up a valuable 80-68 victory on Saturday against TVC, with Matthew Ellis (30pts, 9reb) and Darien Nelson-Henry (14pts, 9reb) both coming close to double-double honours.

Sunday's game between Essex and Hemel would be even closer, finishing 70-67 to the Rebels, and given how tight the three-team tiebreaker ended up being, every basket counted in that one.

Twenty three points from Daniel Johnson-Thompson would ultimately lift the hosts to victory, but when adding together the points difference in the games between Essex, Hemel and Thames Valley, Storm topped the group with +9, the Cavs sealed second at -4, and Essex were eliminated at -5. Fine margins, indeed!

Essex at least started their weekend with a positive result as they saw off D2 side London Elite 64-57, and hopefully the former league runners-up will be able to carry that momentum forward into the regular season after their group-stage disappointment.

Group 3

Milton Keynes Breakers were another side to enjoy a 3-0 run to top spot, winning Group 3 after a narrow 80-77 W against Loughborough Riders on Saturday evening.

The Riders led by as many as nine points heading into the final frame only for the hosts to romp back and delight the home supporters, with Adrian Scarborough (21pts, 9reb, 10/14 FGs) the standout for MKB.

Justin Hedley would drop an impressive 34 points that included 5/6 threes for Loughborough, but things would at least get better for the Midlanders come Sunday evening.

City of Birmingham Rockets condemned Bristol Hurricanes to a winless KitKing Trophy debut as they won 93-79, setting up a straight shootout for qualification between the Rockets and Riders on Sunday.

In perhaps the game of the weekend, it was Loughborough who pipped it, 78-74, though CoB may have thought they had it in the bag as they moved into the lead with just over three minutes to go.

It wasn't to be however as the game ebbed and flowed once more as baskets from a Justin Hedley (10pts, 11reb, 7ast) and a pair of triples from Seth Wylie were just enough to push the hosts over the line and into the quarter-finals.

Group 4

Derby Trailblazers' KitKing defence remains on track as they finished group play 3-0, with Saturday's 88-67 win over local rivals Nottingham Hoods providing them with top spot.

A 28-9 second quarter provided the Hoods with too much to do against the reigning champs, despite a small fightback in the early stages of the second half.

Leighton Ellitot-Sewell shot a highly-efficient 21 points to go with eight boards, with Raheem May-Thompson and Rob Marsden adding 15 points apiece off the Derby bench.

As in Group 3, another Saturday result set up a win and progress Sunday showdown. This time it was Bradford who came out on top as they beat Newcastle 93-70 on Saturday to move on and face Nottingham yesterday.

The Dragons would have too much for the Hoods, winning 76-68 behind 18 points and five assists from Kofi Josephs as they sealed second spot, leaving their hosts on the outside looking it.

Josephs (22pts, 8ast, 6reb) was also on form to down Newcastle on the Saturday, though it was Jordan Whelan (23pts) who would top score for coach Mellor's side.

Held on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 September, the four group winners will each enjoy a home tie against one of the group runners up.

Defending champs Derby take on the lone D2 side to progress in Solent, whilst last year's beaten finalists Bradford will head to Milton Keynes.
