KitKing Trophy 2024/25: Group stage set for completion

The final instalment of KitKing Trophy group action is just around the corner.

The coming weekend will be the second of two that house this season's group games, with 13 contests taking place last week and another 11 set to go ahead across the next two days.

The competition is organised by NBL1 Men's clubs in partnership with naming rights holder Kitking.co.uk and BE.

It sees all 13 NBL1 clubs, plus a trio of invited Division Two sides, competing in four regional groups of four.

The additional Division Two teams for 2024/25 are the pair of relegated D1M sides from a year ago, Barking Abbey and London Elite, plus former D1M winners and last season's D2M South runners up Team Solent Kestrels.

The pool fixtures will be complete come Sunday night, with the top two teams in each pool then advancing to next weekend's quarter-finals.

We take a look at all the remaining games below, with Reading, Thames Valley, Derby and Milton Keynes all trying to wrap up perfect 3-0 records.

Reading's Mitch Clarke (Charlie Dodd)

Group 1

The quartet in Group 1 were busy last weekend, with a pair of double-headers leaving just two contests to be completed this weekend.

Reading Rockets were one of a number of sides to go 2-0 a week ago, with a pair of impressive offensive outputs and a Player of the Week nod for new signing Victor Olarerin.

They'll finish their trio of games with a home tie against D2's Barking Abbey, who are still very much in the mix for second spot after their victory against Solent last Sunday.

Worthing Thunder can boost their potential for progressing if they can claim the South Coast derby against Team Solent Kestrels tomorrow night.

Always a hotly-contested affair, Thunder will be hoping to send the Kestrels back down the M27 winless in this season's competition after their pair of defeats last weekend.

Despite their form to date, Solent can still quality for the next round with a win and a victory for Reading over BA, leaving the Rockets as group winners and a three team tiebreaker to be calculated for who finishes in second.

Group 2

When the Group 2 fixtures were announced, Hemel Storm vs Thames Valley may not have been one circled by fans for special attention.

But the Cavs won both their games last weekend, looking good in the process, and now have the possibility of confirming a perfect 3-0 record if they can top last season's playoff champs and Team of the Week pick Veron Eze.

What isn't in doubt is the anticipation for Sunday's clash between Essex Rebels and Hemel, a pair of top three sides from 2023/24.

The Rebels won't have been happy in dropping their opening game to TVC 84-76, and although they have a road game with winless London Elite tomorrow to lift their spirits, a pair of losses in these short pool formats may be too much for the former league runners up to overcome.

Group 3

Milton Keynes Breakers are in the box seat for topping Group 3 after wins over City of Birmingham and Bristol Hurricanes.

MK can seal a solid group stage with success  against Loughborough Riders tomorrow, who are 1-0 themselves after last Saturday's 77-60 W against the Hurricanes.

The Rockets enjoyed 18 points, 10 boards and six assists from new signing Zach Powell last weekend but only had a narrow loss to Milton Keynes to show for it.

They have their own game against Loughborough on Sunday, and a home clash with Bristol before that, knowing that qualification is still very much in their own hands.

Group 4

Defending champs Derby raced out of the blocks in their title defence to win two from two and can make it three in a row against local rivals Nottingham Hoods tomorrow night.

The Hoods are unbeaten themselves after an opening 82-72 victory against Newcastle, with Latrell Maitland, Elliot Bailey, Greg Skoric and Kayne King all scoring 13 points or more.

That kind of offensive output will be needed against a Trailblazers team who topped the 90-point mark in both their previous wins.

Nottingham conclude their weekend with a home clash against last season's finalists Bradford Dragons, who make the long trip up to Newcastle tomorrow to open their own double-header against a familiar foe in Ronald Blain, who played for the Dragons in 2023/24.
