  • Stats
  • Team and opposition strength
  • Periods of influence in the game
  • Being on a winning team (exceptional performances from players on losing teams will be considered for TOTW)

The Team of the Week

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Adrian Scarborough - Milton Keynes Breakers, forward

21PTS/9REB/3AST/5STL/2blk/33EFF

Scarborough has been quick to make an impact for his new club after signing for Milton Keynes this summer, earning Player of the Week honours for his part in MK's narrow 80-77 victory over Loughborough last Saturday.

The win ensured the Breakers would top their group and receive a home draw in the quarter-finals, with the North Carolina native leading all MK players on 21 points.

Nine boards left the talented forward tantalisingly close to a deserved double-double, and his five steals and three assists displayed auxiliary skills that the Breakers will no doubt enjoy in their maiden D1M season.

Isa Brandon – Team Solent Kestrels, forward

24pts/10reb/6ast/29eff

Isa Brandon helped Solent fly the flag for D2 as the Kestrels became the only team from outside the top flight to progress in the KitKing Trophy, sealing their spot in the next round with a 115-94 victory over South Coast neighbours Worthing Thunder.

The sizable win helped swing TSK's points difference and give them the tiebreaker needed to advance, and Brandon's 24 points on 9/16 shooting were a big part of that.

Add in 10 boards for a double-double plus six assists and the former BBL man did more than enough to help his side progress, with a quarter-final clash against holders Derby Trailblazers next weekend the reward.

Victor Ndoukou – Loughborough Riders, forward

18PTS/6REB/9EFF @ MK
20PTS/12REB/4AST/27EFF vs COB

When the Riders needed him, Ndoukou stood up to be counted on Sunday. In a win-and-you're-in game against City of Birmingham Rockets, Loughborough came through as 78-74 winners, moving onto the quarter-finals in the process.

Ndoukou had a team-high 20 points, with only CoB's Zack Powell (27pts) besting him in that category, whilst his tally also included four triples to go with 12 rebounds and four assists.

The young forward also stayed faultless in the turnover column, doing everything he could to keep his side in front across a tight contest.

Saturday's outing against Milton Keynes was a quieter affair, but his 18 points were still a decent haul despite his lower efficiency.

Derby's Leighton Elliott-Sewell (Nick Higgins)

Leighton Elliott-Sewell – Derby Trailblazers, wing

21pts/8reb/26eff

After a lengthy injury layoff, Elliott-Sewell is back to doing what he does best for the Trailblazers and his 21 points helped the KitKing holders to sail into the quarter-finals this weekend.

Doing his damage in just 23:17 of action, the Derby man was highly efficient around the basket to make 7/9 of his shots. He also collected eight boards, including two on offence, to further improve his Saturday evening.

A healthy stat line and efficient shooting will always get bonus marks when in the hunt for Team of the Week honours, and helping his side pick up an 88-67 victory was the cherry on top.

Bode Adeluola – Worthing Thunder, guard

40pts/3reb/3ast/41eff

A rare pick for a player on a losing team, Adeluola's 40-piece couldn't be ignored.

Battling to keep their KitKing run alive, Adeluola scored nearly 42% of his team's points on a high-volume afternoon against Solent, but he couldn't prevent a 115-94 defeat.

Shooting an impressive 13/17 (76%) from the floor, the veteran guard still nailed 5/6 from long range whilst going a perfect 9/9 from the foul line.

With a trio of assists and rebounds to boot, his 41 efficiency was no mistake, and despite Worthing's progress in the KitKing coming to a close, Adeluola deserved to make it back-to-back TOTW selections.

Dragons poised for a run?

A pair of road W this weekend, including a win-or-go-home clash against the Hoods on Sunday, provided a glimpse into the roster that is being assembled by Coach Mellor in West Yorkshire.

The addition of international Kofi Josephs is a real marquee signing and one that is sure to excite NBL fans. He combined for 40 points, eight rebounds and 13 assists this weekend, playing the role of scorer as well as provider for his side.

Saturday's 93-70 victory over Newcastle saw Jordan Whelan (23pts) lead the scoring charge, but more positively, all five Bradford starters scored 12 points or more.

Sunday's 76-68 W over Nottingham was a bit more of a dogged affair, but the Dragons still found a way to get themselves over the line.

Bench depth may be an issue (Bradford had a nine man roster Saturday and eight on Sunday), though there's still plenty of time to remedy that of course, and new signing Andre Gayle is yet to really click with this new unit. Still, early signs have been positive for Bradford as they booked themselves a deserved quarter-final spot.

Buy or sell on the 3-0 teams?

Three of this season's KitKing group winners finished their early schedule unbeaten at 3-0. It sometimes easy to get carried away with early-season hype, especially when new signings make a quick impact, but do the trio look like the real deal?

Reading topped Group 1 with some real offensive might, scoring 331 points across their three games, but some may point to the fact two of their three opponents reside outside the top flight, and the other went 7-17 in D1M a year ago.

That view does a disservice to Barking, who battled hard in all three of their contests, and Solent, who showed their quality to ultimately seal second spot. Coach Nuruzade still won't be drawn on the Rockets' early form, but others may and it is easy to see why.

Regular-season champs Derby have returned the majority of their core from a year ago, though it remains to be seen how the swap from Sam Masten to David Simental pans out as the season goes on. Still, DTB have come through all three tests to this point, including a road win against Bradford in a repeat of last season's KitKing final, which is surely a big positive for this side.

As a newly promoted side, Milton Keynes are somewhat of an unknown across a full campaign at this level, but they have provided NBL fans with countless reminders of their quality across their lower league exploits and as current NBL National Cup holders.

The loss of standout Jordan Spencer appears to have been cushioned by the introduction of Adrian Scarborough and KJ Johnson, both of whom have impressed in the early going.

Coach Beddow-Patel talked recently about "getting used to a new team", but on that front, it looks like MK are already in mid-season form.
