NBL: Beddow-Patel takes confidence ahead of "strongest" D1M season

Despite securing two wins in as many games over the weekend, Milton Keynes Breakers coach Billy Beddow-Patel knows this will be one of the deepest, strongest NBL1 campaigns ever.

The newly promoted side, which won the Division 2 league, play-off crown, and the National Cup last season, picked up a pair of wins to open their KitKing Trophy campaign.

A 93-89 win at the City of Birmingham Rockets was followed by dismissing fellow Division 1 new boys Bristol Hurricanes 94-74.

“It lays the foundation for the rest of the season, but you don’t want to read into it too much because we’re still in September, but you got to take some confidence from winning any game in what looks to be a deeper, stronger league this year,” Beddow-Patel said.

“As a club, the organisation, the players, and everyone, we’re really pleased to get two wins, especially this early in the season.

“I think it’s tough starting the season with a double-header straight away, but it shows the commitment the guys put in over the summer to be in game shape for the most part.

“Now we have to work on keeping in team shape, playing together, getting used to each other, getting used to the new team.”

A really big challenge

A new team is right for the Breakers, with Nate Robinson, Blayne Freckleton, and Luke Gregory, the three survivors from last season’s treble-winning side.

However, they have recruited veteran Kai Williams, Londoner Temi George, and two Americans, KJ Johnson and Adrian Scarborough, who both led Milton Keynes in scoring over the weekend.

Johnson scored 21 points against Birmingham on Saturday night, while Scarborough was a rebound-shy of a double-double, hitting 23 and pulling down nine boards in the win over Bristol.

A new look, but the results – at the moment – are still the same, as they take their unbeaten run to 28 games in all competitions since the loss to Team Solent Kestrels back on 7 October last year.

“It’s been a really big challenge for me as a coach, dealing with these different and new guys together and taking off from where we were last year, which was a team that had played together as juniors and played together for the two previous seasons and continuity can do a lot early for a team,” explained Beddow-Patel.

“So I’m really pleased with how we started, and hopefully we can keep building from there. Good wins against Bristol and Birmingham, teams with high-level experience.

“We found a way to get the job done, and we know some teams around the league are waiting on certain players, so for us, we got to play who’s in front of us and be ready for every single opportunity.”

The Breakers end their KitKing Trophy group play against Loughborough Riders on Saturday at Bletchley Leisure Centre, tipping off at 5pm.
