NBL1 preview: 12/13 October - live streams, stats and more

Six D1M games once again fill the weekend as teams continue to make headway into the early season.

Bristol are the last team to get their campaign underway after they sat out last weekend, they'll host Loughborough as Essex instead take the opportunity to enjoy a weekend off.

We take a look at all the weekend's action below, with links to live stats at the bottom of the page.

City of Birmingham Rockets (1-0) vs Reading Rockets (1-0)

Both Birmingham and Reading head into this weekend's Battle of the Rockets off the back of wins to open the new season.

Reading took their home debut against a spirited Thames Valley side, coming through as 88-79 winners off the back of a combined 37 points from guard duo Mitch Clarke and Victor Olarerin.

CoB closed the last round with possibly the result of the weekend, heading to reigning D1M regular-season champs Derby on Sunday afternoon and turning them over 82-76.

A 31-18 final quarter provided Birmingham with all the momentum they needed, and they'll roll into this one with plenty of optimism that they can begin stringing together more positive results.

Team of the Week pick Zach Powell will be hoping he can haunt his old side, turning out for Reading in 2023/24, and the versatile guard spearheaded the CoB attack in that upset win of the Trailblazers to the tune of 19 points, four rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocks.

Powell's battle with the likes of Clarke and Olarerin is sure to be great viewing, and how CoB elect to slow down Toronto Metropolitan University alum Simon Chamberlain will also be of interest.

The forward has been in a great form since he joined Reading this summer and a defensive assignment for Commonwealth gold medalist Orlan Jackman could be on the cards on that front.

Elsewhere this weekend

Newcastle Knights (0-1) will aim to bounce back from last weekend's disappointment after they narrowly lost out to Loughborough. They may be heading home to start tomorrow's schedule, but a visit from Hemel Storm (1-0) and an in-form Darien Nelson-Henry will be a tough fixture to navigate.

Bristol Hurricanes have had to wait for their first taste of D1M action after their promotion to the top flight in 2023/24, but after sitting out last weekend they're finally ready to go against a Loughborough Riders (1-0) side that won last time out.

Reigning Player of the Week Adrian Scarborough put together a 27-point, 19-rebound double-double against Essex to earn his recent NBL accolades, and the MK man will take a trip with the rest of the Breakers (1-0) to face Bradford Dragons (0-1) in West Yorkshire tomorrow.

Thames Valley Cavaliers (0-1) will be hoping that home court advantage will be enough to help them earn a maiden win on the new season, with a tricky visit from Nottingham Hoods (1-0) on the cards.

The Hoods won last weekend, beating Worthing in a high-scoring contest that sent forward Greg Skoric to the NBL Team of the Week.

The only other game to fill Saturday's slate sees Derby Trailblazers (0-1) looking to bounce back from that loss to CoB with a long trip to the South coast to take on Worthing Thunder (0-1).

Trailblazers captain Malcolm Smith said: “We feel focused and determined to right the ship. We got off course a little bit last weekend, but we’ve got an experienced group of guys who are locked in and ready to do whatever we have to do to get a win.

“The guys are itching to get back out there after losing to Birmingham. I think if we could have been able to get back on court the next day, we would have done that, but we’re certainly ready to get going against Worthing."

Thunder enjoyed an incredible 46-point, 50-efficiency game last weekend from Elijah Maynard. If the former Reading man can continue that type of production tomorrow, Derby could be staring down the barrel of an 0-2 start to their title defence.
