NBL1 recap: 5/6 October - live streams, stats and more

The opening weekend of D1M action for 2024/25 didn't disappoint, with big scores, huge stats, plus an upset or two.

Last season's top two, Derby and Essex, both lost, while there was a 46-point outing from Worthing's Elijah Maynard in a losing effort against Nottingham Hoods.

We take a look back at all the weekend's action below, with links to live stats at the bottom of the page.

Essex Rebels (0-1) 62-83 Milton Keynes Breakers (1-0)

Essex's hopes of a repeat of last season's title challenge took an early blow as they went down at 83-62 home to a confident Milton Keynes.

Held to just nine fourth-quarter points following a disappointing 25-17 third, MK enjoyed their maiden D1M victory at the first time of asking behind a massive 27-point, 19-rebound double-double from Adrian Scarborough.

The Breakers were supported by a pair of 15-point outings from Nate Robinson and KJ Johnson, as the visitors moved ahead for good early in the second half.

The Rebels shot just 2/20 from beyond the arc as they chased the game, but it was a bad day at the office for the former league runners-up as they lost the rebound battle 61-41 and gave up 52 points in the paint.

Bright performances from Connor Nelson (18pts), Luke Busumbru (16pts, 6ast, 4reb, 4stl) and a double-double from Emmanuel Kanwei (11pts, 10reb) will give Essex reason for hope as they look to bounce back at home to Nottingham in two week's time.

MK will look to keep rolling next weekend as they head to Bradford for what should be an exciting contest.

Elsewhere this weekend

Loughborough Riders (1-0) found a way to edge past Newcastle University (0-1), winning 80-76.

A tied game at 69-69 with 3:29 to go, the hosts would narrowly enjoy the better of the final stages to come out in front, with Victor Ndoukou (19pts, 9reb) and Ben Woog (17pts, 12reb) both playing well for the hosts to cancel out a game-high 23 points from Newcastle's Ronald Blaine.

Nottingham Hoods (1-0) were the winners in a high-scoring shootout against Worthing Thunder (0-1), with a 112-103 final.

With plenty of action on the score board, Nottingham were able to enjoy some standout performances from the likes of Landon Taliaferro (30pts, 7/9 3pt) and Greg Skoric (25pts, 8reb), as Kayne King dished out a stunning 15 assists.

Elijah Maynard's incredible 46-point ball game for Thunder would be in vain, playing the full 40 minutes and adding seven rebounds and three assists to his eye-popping stat line.

Defending playoff champs Hemel Storm (1-0) got their new season underway with an 87-79 victory against Bradford Dragons (0-1).

Storm rode the two-headed attack of Trent Monkman (23pts, 11reb) and Sam Newman (22pts, 8reb) to see them past a spirited Bradford side, who were led by 24 points from Jordan Whelan.

Reading Rockets (1-0) made it two in a row against Thames Valley Cavaliers (0-1), following up last weekend's KitKing Trophy quarter-final win with an 88-79 league victory on Saturday night.

A close game going into the fourth, Reading took that final frame 18-8 to ease to their first win of the new campaign. Mitch Clarke (18pts, 5ast, 4reb), Victor Olarerin (19pts) and Simon Chamberlain (14pts) all did their bit for the Rockets, cancelling out a nice 25-point, seven-rebound, six-assist effort from TVC's Ed Lucas.

Sunday's only clash saw a big upset as Derby Trailblazers (0-1) begin their regular-season title defence with a surprise 82-76 home loss against City of Birmingham Rockets (1-0)

Trailing by 11 with 8:01 left on the clock, few would have expected the 29-12 Rockets' run that break the game open and seal a famous win.

CoB shared the load as all five starters scored in double digits, led by Zach Powell (19pts, 4reb, 4ast, 4 stl) and 14 points apiece from Martyn Gayle, Lucas McGregor and Luke Okosieme.

Leighton Elliott-Sewell had a game-high 22 points for Derby in a disastrous start to the Kyle Henderson era for the D1M standouts.

Worthing's Elijah Maynard had a huge game this weekend but couldn't get Thunder a W (Gary Robinson)
