NBL1 Team of the Week (October 12/13 2024)

As the D1M action continues, so do the top-tier performances from some of the league's finest.

Bristol picked up their first-ever win in the top flight, City of Birmingham grabbed a statement victory off Reading and Derby's title defence got back on track in Worthing, all off the back of some great outings from players across the top flight.

Have your say on this week's choices and give a shout-out to the players you think deserve one using the hashtag #NBL2425. Don't forget to tag us!

The Team of the Week

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Nate Robinson - Milton Keynes Breakers, guard

43PTS/2REB/3ast/2STL/38EFF

Robinson was on fire this past weekend, putting Bradford to the sword with a stunning 43 points.

The former Manchester Giant clearly likes the rims in West Yorkshire as he hit a stunning nine three pointers as the Breakers easily won 123-78.

Robinson didn't just shoot for volume, he was efficient as well, hitting 16 of his 26 shots (61%). The talented guard also gave away just one turnover across 32:35 of action, the lowest of any MK starter.

Two rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals were a bonus, but Robinson did his damage from long range this weekend for a performance worthy of Player of the Week status.

Leighton Elliott-Sewell – Derby Trailblazers, wing

31pts/7reb/4ast/2blk/38eff

Derby surprisingly dropped their opening game of the season, and facing one of the trickier road games on the schedule in a long trip down to Worthing, the Trailblazers needed a bounce back performance last weekend.

Leighton Elliott-Sewell made sure that was the case, and his 31 points were easily a game-high on the South coast.

Good things happened at both ends of the court whenever the Derby man was on the floor, finishing with a +/- of 31 in the 100-74 win, much higher than the next closest Trailblazer in Jase Harrison (+/- 19).

Seven boards, four assists and a pair of blocks put the finishing touches on Elliott-Sewell's latest big outing, with Derby reaping the benefits of the now fit again standout talent.

Justin Robinson – Thames Valley Cavaliers, guard

24PTS/6REB/5ast/2stl/35EFF

It was only a matter of time before the two-time SBL MVP broke into the D1M Team of the Week following his signing at Thames Valley, and his performance in the 91-78 victory over Nottingham was too good to ignore.

24 points were a solid contribution, but the fact they came at a 7/8 shooting clip, which included 5/6 from beyond the arc, was a standout stat line this weekend.

Coming off a win last week, Nottingham were looking to start hot but Robinson contributed eight points (including two of his triples), plus two assists and a steal in the opening 8:16 of play to ensure the Cavs would trail by just a point at 25-24 going into a second quarter that they won 27-14.

Helping out elsewhere, Robinson also pulled down six rebounds and dished five assists, keeping himself busy in the passing lanes with a pair of steals.

TVC's Justin Robinson (Toby Gastaldi-Davies)

Daniel Edozie – Bristol Hurricanes, forward

24pts/13reb/31eff

Bristol Hurricanes first game in D1M was a good one as they beat Loughborough 79-66 behind the exploits of captain Daniel Edozie.

The former Commonwealth Games man enjoyed a game-high in points (24) along with a team-high 13 rebounds, with only Loughborough's Michael Joiner able to match his tally on the glass.

Shooting 69% (9/13) exclusively from inside the arc, Edozie was also reliable from the foul line as he nailed six of his seven free throws as the most fouled Bristol player.

As Bristol continue to work through their debut D1M season, they'll need more performances from the likes of Edozie and others on the Hurricanes roster if they're to make their mark. For now though, they're off to a great start.

Veron Eze – Hemel Storm, guard

24pts/7reb/3ast/2stl/30eff

A milestone weekend for Veron Eze saw the British guard pass 1,000 NBL points, with his haul off the Storm bench in the 109-81 W over Newcastle Knights.

Despite not cracking the opening five, Eze still logged more playing time than four of Hemel's five starters, and it is easy to see why given his production.

24 points went with seven rebounds, three assists and two steals, but shooting 9/13 that included a perfect 2/2 from range and 4/4 from the foul line was a highly efficient way to do it.

Hemel went into half time leading 45-34 but that advantage would balloon past the 30 point mark following a 35-18 frame, and that is when Eze would do his best work.

Eight points, two steals and an assist all came in the 6:58 he played in that quarter, helping Storm to put the game to bed with ten minutes still to go.

Team basketball

MK show no signs of slowing down

Nate Robinson stole the headlines this week with a Player of the Week performances, but Adrian Scarborough can feel somewhat aggrieved to have missed out on the Team of the Week given his production in MK's big win over Bradford on Saturday.

An 18-point, 14-rebound double-double on 80% shooting is some effort to not make the cut, highlighting the riches the Breakers have at their disposal right now.

They're 2-0 and head into a tie with winless Newcastle next to make it 3-0, and the Breakers strolled past Bradford this weekend at a canter.

They won the rebound battle 56-26, and managed it without putting big minutes into the legs of forwards Chris Tawiah (12:09) or Troy McIndoe (13:03), and without experienced forward Kai Williams, who didn't feature.

Blayne Freckleton is well known to NBL fans for his scoring exploits but played a nice complementary role off the bench against the Dragons, with 13 points on 4/5 shooting that included a couple of triples.

Three games (vs Newcastle, @ Bristol, vs Loughborough) sit between the Breakers and a trip to reigning playoff champs Hemel Storm on 9 November. Depending how MK navigate that stretch, the clash with Storm could be one of the games of the season so far.

Bristol are up and running

A special mention goes to Bristol Hurricanes after picking up their first win in D1M following this weekend's 79-66 victory over Loughborough.

The former D2 North winners were made to wait for their curtain call after sitting out the opening weekend of the season, but they made the most of their home opener thanks to a big performance from captain Edozie, plus Sol Rolls-Tyson (11pts, 10reb, 6ast) and Vilmantis Dilys (15pts, 4reb, 3ast).

Bristol also rolled with a strong 11-man rotation this weekend, with all but one player logging at least 6:39 of playing time.

That depth is sure to help the Hurricanes as the long season winds along, and with more performances like the one this past weekend, coach Varney's side will soon be looking up the D1M table rather than down it.
