Rockets' new programme driving women and girls into basketball

Reading Rockets Basketball Club has launched a new female-driven basketball programme: 'She can play, she can coach' to engage more women and girls into playing basketball and develop as coaches.

Since the programme began, over 70 more women and girls are playing weekly, alongside five who are working through the Rockets' coaching programme - these new coaches range from older players to mums whose daughters are playing.

Those involved feel they are part of a professional, empowering, and fun basketball programme that prolongs their time in the sport. By providing high-quality coaching, appropriate training facilities, and competitive opportunities, the aim is to help players reach their full potential and enjoy their playing experiences - and see coaching as a next step in their basketball journey.

The club know that not everyone will go on to play at an elite level and so designed its programme to promote enjoyment and a love for basketball as the primary aim.

Rockets' Programme Lead Steph Johnson said:

"The first experience of sport for many girls can completely shape their outlook on staying active as they develop into adults.

"Where ever someone finishes on our programme, we hope that they have positive feelings towards sport and physical activity and remain active.

"The programme has shone a bright, positive light on female basketball within the club and local community, as there is now lots of accessible activity and built to be sustainable.

"Participation in sports like basketball helps build confidence, resilience, and a sense of achievement. By creating an environment where women and girls feel supported and encouraged, whether they're playing or coaching, we want a legacy of female basketball players, coaches and ultimately programmes that inspire the next generation."
