Title defence begins for Team England as 3x3 confirmed for Glasgow 2026

The Commonwealth Games Federation has announced that Glasgow will be the host city of the 2026 Commonwealth Games – with 3x3 basketball part of the new look concept.

The 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games will take place in Scotland from Thursday, 23 July to Sunday, 2 August 2026, returning to the city 12 years after the hugely successful 2014 Games.

Glasgow 2026 will feature a reduced 10-sport programme concentrated across four venues within an eight-mile corridor, ensuring an action-packed broadcast schedule across each day of competition and making the event accessible and appealing to spectators looking to enjoy the multi-sport environment and festival feel.

3x3 made its debut as a Commonwealth Games sport at Birmingham 2022 and England had much to celebrate with its men’s and women’s teams creating basketball history by winning gold and silver medals to capture the nation’s attention and imagination.

The 2022 Games yielded both a Gold and a Silver for Team England's 3x3 sides

3x3 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Orlan Jackman, who also sits on the board for Commonwealth Games England, said:

“I’m excited that Glasgow has confirmed to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games to give an opportunity to everybody in those sports to compete.

“3x3 in Birmingham was such a huge moment, I’m just glad that it has another chance to feature in the Games and we will have another chance to defend our medals because right now, we’re the team to beat and welcome all contenders.”

3x3 Commonwealth Games silver medallist Shanice Beckford-Norton said:

"Obviously Birmingham was really great for us, being so close to home and having family and friends being able to come out and support us and all the people that have continued to follow us individually since.

"Continuing that in Glasgow will be really exciting, and having already hosted the Games, we know it's going to be a great show that they put on.

"The inclusion of 3x3, including wheelchair, is amazing news. The atmosphere in Birmingham was great to experience, and having both disciplines in the same place made it really feel like everyone was there with us.

"Not being able to grab a gold in 2022 still hurts, but seeing what we were able to do as Team England with a gold and silver, plus a bronze in the wheelchair, was brilliant.

"Our main focus in 2022 was to medal, and we did just that, so the main focus in 2026 will to finish with gold."

Basketball England Head of Talent and Performance Steve Bucknall said:

"Learning today that 3x3 has been included in the 2026 Commonwealth Games programme is fantastic news.

"Our England teams performed exceptionally two years ago to obtain their gold and silver medal haul in Birmingham, the news from the Commonwealth Games Federation brings clarity to our next steps and we're excited to put together a performance programme and elite squad selection that can, from the men's perspective, defend our title, and for the women, go one better and turn silver to gold."

Basketball England Chair Paul Blanchard, who led Team England to a record medal haul at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games as Commonwealth Games England Chief Executive, said:

"I am really pleased that the 23rd Commonwealth Games is going ahead. Glasgow has pedigree in hosting fantastic international multi-sport events, including the 2014 edition of the Games, so I expect an awesome experience for athletes and fans alike.

"3x3 basketball and its wheelchair equivalent were fan favourites in Birmingham, with the Smithfield venue packed to the rafters to see the fast and furious basketball format and England win gold and silver. I am glad that the Commonwealth Games Federation recognised its popularity and included it in the new-look schedule for the Games.

"From contenders to defenders, preparation of our England 3x3 squads begins now. I think I speak on behalf of the English basketball community that we're excited to see our athletes back on the court, under the lights and rising to the occasion to win basketball titles for the country."

Point of difference for the Games

With over 500,000 tickets to be made available at a future date, there will be around 3,000 of the best athletes competing from up to 74 Commonwealth nations and territories that represent 2.5 billion people – one-third of the world’s population.

Parasport will once again be fully integrated as a key priority and point of difference for the Games, with six parasports included on the sport programme.

The full sports programme will include:

  • Athletics and Para Athletics (Track & Field)
  • Swimming and Para Swimming
