WNBL1 preview: 5/6 October - live streams, stats and more

The WNBL marches on, with five games to begin October.

Manchester, Cobham, Loughborough and CoLA will all try to back up opening weekend wins, whilst Bristol also sit at 1-0 after their forfeit win over ARU.

The likes of Barking, Brent and Reading will be looking to bounce back and get themselves into the win column after disappointment last time out.

Ipswich will also wrap up their Betty Codona Trophy group with a game against Essex Rebels, with coach Drane's side looking to follow up their win against EuroCup holders London Lions with further success.

We take a look at all the weekend's action below, with links to live stats at the bottom of the page.

Worcester Wolves (0-1) vs Brent Bulls (0-1)

A pair of winless teams meet in the Midlands on Sunday as Worcester and Brent battle to pick up their first W of the young season.

Worcester were comfortably beaten by Manchester last time out, going down 70-47.

The Wolves shot just 24% from the floor in that contest, a clear area for improvement, though if it was just opening day nerves, a stern Manchester defensive display or something deeper remains to be seen. It is surely something that coach Lewis will be looking to address going forward.

Carolina Marques still showed her D1W quality in that defeat, leading all Worcester scorers with 15 points. Her production will be important to the Wolves' plight this season, and she'll want more of the same this weekend against a strong opponent.

Brent have been pegged as an early-season title contender by some, especially with the addition of American Lindsey Cleary from Reading, but they suffered an opening loss at home to CoLA that set those aspirations back a step.

Shooting just 31% themselves in that one, Coach Liburd will have a few wrinkles of his own to iron out if the Bulls are going to bounce back this weekend.

Cleary (15pts, 5reb) and Judit Fritz (10pts) both failed to reach their best in that CoLA loss but should be primed for better days going forward, though Worcester will be hoping that this weekend isn't the start of that resurgence.

Elsewhere this weekend

Four other games fill the weekend, starting with Anglia Ruskin University (0-1) hosting Barking Abbey (0-1) on Saturday.

ARU had clearance issues that prevented them taking on Bristol last weekend, they'll be hoping for progress on that front, while Barking were dealt an 85-50 defeat by defending regular season champs Ipswich last Sunday.

Despite the result, Ipswich head coach Nick Drane was complimentary of the BA roster, and thinks they can be a force in D1W this season.

Playoff champs CoLA Southwark Pride (1-0) will look to make it two from two as they entertain Cobham Cobras (1-0).

Cobham head coach Luke Dowding admits that his team has much to learn despite getting their WNBL Division 1 season off to a flying start, and playing one of the most successful sides in D1W is sure to give Cobham a lesson or two this weekend regardless of the result.

Saturday is rounded off by Bristol Academy Flyers' (1-0) trip to up the country as they take on Manchester Mystics (1-0).

Just two points separated these teams in the 2023/24 standings, with Bristol going 9-13 to Manchester's 8-14. That means both teams can be a good yard stick of progress against the other tomorrow in what is sure to be an intriguing contest.

Aside from Worcester v Brent, Sunday's only other game sees Reading Rockets (0-1) going up against Loughborough Riders (1-0).

Reading had just seven players available in their 66-44 loss to Cobham a week ago, they'll be hoping for some reinforcements against a Loughborough side that came from behind to knock off Thames Valley last time out.

SLB Trophy

Ipswich can quality for the next round of the Betty Codona Trophy with a win against Essex Rebels this weekend. The Suffolk side are currently top of Group D, with only the first of the three teams progressing, as they take on their local rivals tomorrow.

A win would see Ipswich progress regardless after their 104-80 win last time out, though a loss may still see them through if London can beat Essex in the group's remaining game, and the tiebreaker goes the WNBL side's way.

That game between the Lions and Rebels is slated to take place on 12 October, so Ipswich won't have long to wait long to find out their fate.
