Academy Leagues: EABL, WEABL final spots up for grabs as CBL playoffs get underway

Eight teams are just one win away from punching their ticket to Manchester's National Basketball Performance Centre.

The EABL and WEABL Playoff Finals are just a few weeks away, but the Final Four quartets need one more positive result to give themselves a shot at a title.

All four #1 seeds are still alive, as are most of the #2 seeds, as the best of the best from this year's crop of sides go head-to-head.

The opening round of the CBL playoffs are also on tap, with eight hopefuls trying to keep their post-season hopes alive.

We take a look at the action below.

EABL

The top half of the draw will send either North winners and #1 seeds Myerscough College or South #2 seeds City of London Academy - Southwark to this year's showpiece in Manchester.

For 'Sco, it would be a chance to make the final for the first time since 2022/23, and a shot at a first EABL title since their shared crown with Barking in the COVID-curtailed 2019/20 season.

CoLA can make it back-to-back trips to Manchester, with last year's campaign ultimately ending in a defeat to Charnwood.

The defending champs are in the other half of the draw, with Charnwood College Riders needing to overcome a difficult road trip to Barking Abbey if they're to keep their title defence alive.

The tie is a repeat of last year's EABL Final Fours, when the Midlands programme came through as 75-60 winners. The roles were reversed that day though, with the game taking place at Charnwood instead of East London, and with the Riders as #1 seeds and Barking as #2.

In a bid to increase the number of games played by all Academy sides, the teams finishing outside the playoff positions will play each other in the post-season to create a full 1-12 classification across the EABL.

Last week's beaten Elite Eight sides will all face off to start deciding fifth through eighth, with Manchester Magic at home to JMA Reading Rockets and Itchen College hosting Derby Trailblazers.

After picking up wins against Southern opponents last week, BMet City of Birmingham Rockets will host SGS College in a battle for ninth and 10th, whilst Copleston High School and Oaklands Wolves will go head-to-head to decide 11th and 12th.

WEABL

Manchester Mystics are the lone North conference side left in this year's playoffs after Nottingham, Sheffield and Charnwood all fell last Wednesday.

If Manchester are going to provide a Northern finalist for the first time since 2021/22 and book their maiden trip to the NBPC in the process, they'll need to overcome defending champs and five-time winners City of London Academy - Southwark.

CoLA prevailed easily against Charnwood last time out and will hope to do the same this week, keeping their dominant WEABL run going at Manchester's expense.

Another South Conference powerhouse sits in the other half of the draw, with regular season champs and #1 seeds Copleston High School hosting #3 Barking Abbey.

Copleston won both the regular-season games between these two sides by a combined 93 points, but Barking are a much more competitive outfit right now and have grown in confidence as the season has worn on.

If their improvements will be enough to test the 2019/20 co-winners remains to be seen, otherwise the Suffolk programme will be progressing to a second-straight WEABL final.

As is the case in the EABL, the teams finishing outside the playoff positions will play each other in the post-season to create a full 1-11 classification across the WEABL.

Last Wednesday's quartet of beaten sides are all in action to begin ordering fifth through eighth, with Charnwood College Riders at home to Oaklands Wolves, whilst there's an all-Northern affair as The Sheffield College take a trip down the M1 to face Nottingham Academy Wildcats.

JMA Reading Rockets won their first game of the season last Wednesday and are rewarded with a ninth/tenth place game against Itchen College.

Due to the uneven split of North and South teams, Milton Keynes 5 Dimensions Breakers Academy are confirmed as 11th place finishers for this season after their defeat to JMA.

CBL

Eight teams are just three wins away from claiming the 2024/25 CBL championship, with four exciting games on tap for Wednesday afternoon.

Defending champs St Aloysius College finished 7-7 in Group C to miss the post-season, making for a wide open field going forward that contains three former winners.

Group B top dogs New City College are the only side to enter the playoffs with a perfect record. Their 14-0 run makes them the team to beat, with 2021/22 CBL winners and #8 seeds Dagenham Park getting the tough task of trying to end that streak.

#2 seeds and Group A winners The Sheffield College have adjusted well to life in the CBL after competing in the EABL a year ago. They have a date with #7 seeds The Crest Academy, who went a very respectable 11-3 in Group C to make the cut as one of the two best third placed teams. You can watch the game live HERE.

Last year's semi-finalists and Group C winners Holy Trinity School Storm begin their playoff journey with a home tilt against fellow Group C outfit Northolt High School London United. One of HTS' two losses on the season came via last month's 94-78 defeat to Northolt, making this one a compelling third instalment after Storm won their home leg by 20 back in November.

That just leaves a pair of second place teams to go head-to-head in the #4 vs #5 clash, with 2022/23 winners and last year's beaten finalists Shenley Brook End School taking a trip to Xaverian College Manchester Giants Academy.

Xaverian College only missed out on topping Group A via the head-to-head tiebreaker with eventual winners The Sheffield College, showing the quality they have at their disposal after a 12-2 season.

Still, Shenley Brook End are aiming for a third straight Final for a reason. They're a tough opponent, and after finishing 11-3 this season, they know how to get the job done.
