Academy Leagues: Two wins for CoLA, plus Myerscough, Derby and BA - Week 14

The number of regular-season games remaining is going down fast, providing plenty of excitement in both the EABL and WEABL.

Copleston may have lost the battle but won the war in the WEABL South, losing out to CoLA in the game of the day but retaining the head-to-head tiebreaker between the two sides in the fight for top spot.

Barking also won in the WEABL, with CoLA, Derby and Myerscough all picking up victories in the EABL's trio of games.

We take a look back at all the action below.

EABL

Copleston High School (1-8) ran visitors City of London Academy - Southwark (6-1) close but couldn't put a dent in their title aspirations, with a 76-71 final score.

A 30-point, 13-rebound double-double from Copleston's Charlie Smythe kept the hosts in touch, but 23 points and 17 boards from Isaac Fiagbe helped to get CoLA over the line in the end.

Derby Trailblazers (2-4) showed no signs of rust as they beat BMET City of Birmingham Rockets (2-6) 91-68.

Out of action since early December, the Trailblazers enjoyed a quality outing from Casey Burr (24pts, 8reb), shooting 50% as a team to move firmly back into the post-season conversation.

BMet were led by 13 points apiece from Reuben Ubogu and Nektarios Papadopoulos.

Myerscough College (7-2) ended their two-game skid by knocking off SGS College (1-7) 81-61.

Marcus Robinson (19pts), Blake Gordon and Aaron Ogunjobi (13pts each) led the charge for the North conference leaders, cancelling out a game-high 19 points from Titas Nedzinskas.

Barking Abbey's (5-0) quest to stay perfect is on hold after their trip to Berkshire to face JMA Reading Rockets (3-3) was postponed on Wednesday morning.

WEABL

Copleston High School's (8-1) push for another perfect regular season in the WEABL South is no more after they lost 65-59 against City of London Academy - Southwark (6-1).

After the hosts enjoyed the best of the early going, a 22-8 second quarter put CoLA firmly in control. Leading by 13 midway through the final frame, the visitors must have fancied their chances of securing the win by the margin needed, only for Copleston to fight back late and just do enough.

Adaora Dioramma (17pts, 13reb), Ayla Habbal (15pts, 9ast, 8reb) and Chloe Vella (13pts, 9reb) all put in great performances for the London programme, with Maisie Keyes (19pts) top-scoring for Copleston.

The loss by six was enough for the Suffolk programme to hold onto the head-to-head tiebreaker between the two sides by a single point, meaning Copleston just need to beat Itchen in their final game on 26 February to claim another WEABL South crown.

JMA Reading Rockets (0-6) versus Barking Abbey (2-4) was postponed on Wednesday morning with BA instead making a late diversion to face Oaklands College (1-4). It was a worthwhile switch for BA as well, coming home with a 69-44 road win.

Barking's Megan Verbeeten (29pts) had a quality outing to get her side the W, pushing BA into the mix for third place in the process.

Bo Guttormsdottir-Frost (14pts, 11reb) top scored for Oaklands.
