The 2025 Academy League Finals made history, crowning CBL, WEABL and EABL champs.

The day started with New City College seeing off The Sheffield College 68-54 in the CBL Final, before Copleston High School got the better of hometown Manchester Mystics 83-68 to claim the WEABL title.

Barking Abbey rounded off the day with a convincing 69-54 win over Myerscough College to decide the EABL crown.

EABL Playoff Final

Barking Abbey 69-54 Myerscough College

Barking Abbey extended their run as the EABL’s most successful programme, claiming the 2024/25 title with a 69-54 victory against Myerscough College.

Just as they did when these teams last met in Manchester for 2022/23’s showpiece, BA came out on top, displaying slick execution at both ends of the court to move onto six EABL titles.

In a clash of styles, with the North champs favouring a guard heavy line up against Barking’s significant height advantage, size won the day, with BA’s high-intensity defence keeping Myerscough to just 26% shooting (19/71 FGs).

In keeping with the tone of the game, the MVP award went to 7’1” forward Lewis Obiorah, who was a matchup nightmare throughout as he finished with 10 points (5/5 FGs), 10 rebounds and five blocks.

His +/- of +19 was the highest of any player for the East London programme, further highlighting his impact on the game.

Adam Lukosevicius (16pts, 6reb) top-scored for the winners, with Amarlie Wilkinson (13pts, 10reb) providing a double-double as BA's starting five moved on to the next step of their basketball journeys in winning style.

Marcus Robinson (19pts, 7reb) and Junior Sanchez (12pts, 14reb) both played well for 'Sco in defeat, with the North West programme extending their unwanted record of being beaten finalists on five separate occasions.

WEABL Playoff Final

Manchester Mystics 68-83 Copleston High School

Copleston High School picked up their second WEABL title, and a first since being named co-winners five years ago, as they beat Manchester Mystics 83-68.

Joint-winners in the COVID-hit 2019/20 campaign, the Suffolk programme wouldn't be denied lone glory, ending the hopes of a first-ever WEABL title for Manchester despite some raucous local support at the National Basketball Performance Centre.

Winning all four quarters, Copleston slowly pulled away the longer the game wore on, with only a brief Mystics spell midway through the first half denying a tip-to-buzzer victory.

Taking the rebound battle 58-40 and pulling down 20 offensive boards, Coach Drane's side enjoyed solid outings from forwards Louisa Gibbins (17pts, 14reb) and Holly Ensoll (6pts, 10reb), leaving guard Cerys Leach to splash six triples on the way to a team-high 24 points.

MVP honours would go to Hannah Gray, who put together a stunning all-round performance to offer a bit of everything, closing with 21 points on 72% shooting, plus 10 rebounds and seven assists in just over 30 minutes of action. Having overcome two seasons of injury problems, the award and the victory was richly-deserved for the 19-year-old.

Despite the setback in their debut WEABL final, the future looks bright for Manchester as U17 Player of the Year Irene Oboavwoduo (24pts, 12reb, 9ast) enjoyed a fine performance, and North Conference MVP Elizandra Costa closed with 20 points.

CBL Playoff Final

New city College 68-54 The Sheffield College

Like Copleston High School in the WEABL Final, New City College used the 2024/25 season to secure a first solo crown, beating The Sheffield College 68-54.

Joint-winners in 2019/20, the Group B champs capped off a perfect season, going 14-0 in regulation with three playoff victories, to be left celebrating at the final buzzer, keeping their Northern opponents at arm's length for most of this year's showpiece.

The game turned on a pivotal third quarter. With early baskets, Sheffield were buoyed by being able to tie things up at 31-31, the first time the teams had been level since the opening frame. That was as good as it would get for the South Yorkshire programme though, with NCC eventually taking the third 19-11 to build a lead they'd never relinquish.

That advantage would top out at 19 early in the fourth, and barring a late fightback from Sheffield that brought the difference down to nine, New City were good value for their win.

For the second year in a row, Tyresse Poku-Mensah grabbed the final's MVP award. The explosive guard closed with a game-high 20 points to go with 12 rebounds and the double-double, tacking on four assists and a pair of steals.

Reuben Haynes (15pts, 6reb) and Ocean Brobbey (10pts, 8reb) both played well in support, with regular-season MVP Devontae Dacosta (9pts, 9reb) finishing just shy of a double-double despite shooting 3/15 from the field.

Charlie Stoddart and Miklos Zalavari both closed with a team-high 15 points for Sheffield, with the latter adding nine rebounds and seven assists in the loss.
