Coaching during Ramadan: Webinar to help create inclusive environments

Basketball England’s training provider Sport Structures is hosting a webinar at 11am on 11 March to help coaches and trainers support participants during Ramadan.

The free, hour-long continuing professional development opportunity is hosted by Sport Structures Sports Project Officer in Consultancy Iman Mahmood, who will share insight on the cultural significance of Ramadan, hear real lived experiences, and give practical tips for creating an inclusive environment.

What is Ramadan?

During the Holy Month of Ramadan, Muslims observe a period of fasting, spiritual reflection, charity and prayer.

It is a time of heightened religious devotion and introspection.

This year, Ramadan began on the 28 February and will last until the 30 March, which is marked by the festival Eid al-Fitr, which is a time for celebration, friends and family and feast.

The fasting element of the religious practice sees an abstinence of food and drink between the break of dawn and sunset, which the Muslim Sports Foundation says can make taking part in physical activity feel harder, but safeguards can be put in place to keep people moving safely.

During the webinar, learners will:

  • Understand the significance of Ramadan – learning about the cultural and spiritual importance of Ramadan for Muslims, including the practice of fasting and its impact on daily life
  • Explore the experiences of those participating in Ramadan - gaining insight into the physical, emotional, and social aspects of Ramadan, including common experiences and considerations
  • Develop strategies for providing practical support – learning how to offer respectful and effective support, including tips on accommodating fasting schedules and ensuring inclusivity in a variety of settings
