NBL1 recap: 22/23 February 2025 - live streams, stats and more

Hemel's unbeaten streak is over after a home loss against Reading Rockets.

The NBL Live cameras were able to enjoy the top of the table clash, with the Rockets coming through as 105-93 road winners, though Storm's cushion at the top still remains with the playoffs in sight.

We take a look back at all the action below, with links to live stats at the bottom of the page.

Hemel Storm (16-1) 93-105 Reading Rockets (14-4)

Reading stuck another psychological blow against Hemel as they ended their hopes of an unbeaten season with a 105-93 win.

After claiming the NBL National Cup against the same opponent last month, Reading kept on rolling against the defending playoff champs to put a '1' in their loss column behind 32 points from Victor Olarerin.

Cup final MVP Justin Hopkins added 30 points as he continued a rich vein of form against the league leaders, with Mitch Clarke (18pts, 8reb, 7ast) nearing a triple-double.

Their production helped power a fast start for the Rockets, who won the opening frame 27-18 and progressed from there to lead 54-37 at the half. Hemel would fight back, particularly towards the end the third quarter when their deficit dipped as low as four points, but that was as close as the teams would come.

Matt Ellis (30pts, 9reb) led Hemel in scoring, with Sam Newman (22pts, 14ast) and Darien Nelson-Henry (14pts, 10reb) both chipping in double-doubles.

Despite the result, Hemel remain in a strong position to seal top spot. Reading did claim the head-to-head tiebreaker between the sides but would still need Storm to drop three of their remaining seven games for that to come into play.

The first opportunity for Coach Clark's side to bounce back comes on the road in Milton Keynes next weekend, another tough encounter, as Reading head home to host Loughborough Riders.

Elsewhere this weekend

Newcastle Knights (6-11) started their double-header weekend with a heartbreaking 106-105 OT loss against City of Birmingham Rockets (7-12).

The hosts battled back from a 14-point deficit to force the extra period, though Martyn Gayle's late triple would prove to be a dagger blow for the Rockets as they left town with both points.

Newcastle's Logan Rooney (26pts, 6reb) and CoB's Zack Powell (29pts, 5reb) were the stats leaders in that one.

Bradford Dragons (4-12) gave their D1M survival hopes a huge boost as they beat fellow strugglers Worthing Thunder (4-15) 95-83.

A 19-8 first quarter gave Bradford the boost they needed to lead from nearly tip to buzzer, with Justin Williams dropping a huge 38 points for the Dragons behind 6/9 3pt shooting.

It became a weekend to forget for Worthing as they also lost Sunday's only game, going down 101-86 in Newcastle.

Thunder got good production from Manuel Hernandez (26pts) and Bode Adeluola (25pts, 8ast), but a balanced Knights' attack that saw six players reach double-digit scoring got the job done in the end.

Hafeez Abdul and Corey Johnson (19pts apiece) led the charge, with Scott Angus (10pts, 13reb) on double-double duty.

Bristol Hurricanes (9-8) put themselves in a 30-4 hole after a slow start against Derby Trailblazers (11-6), and despite an admirable fightback, they lost 65-60.

Derby's Malcolm Smith led all scorers with 23 points, cancelling out double-doubles from Bristol's Vilmantas Dilys (14pts, 10reb) and Daniel Edozie (11pts, 12reb).

Milton Keynes Breakers (11-6) are one of D1M's form teams right now and made it five in a row with a 90-82 win against Loughborough Riders (11-8).

American Adrian Scarborough (25pts, 12reb) produced another efficient double-double outing, and his battle against Loughborough's Michael Joiner (18pts, 6reb, 7ast) was a good one. MK captain Jordan Spencer continues to pick up where he left off since rejoining the Breakers, producing a near triple-double of 15 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds.

London Cavaliers (7-10) are struggling to hang onto the playoff spots as they slipped to a 90-82 defeat away to Essex Rebels (9-7).

Twenty points from both Joe Hart and Emmanuel Kanwei would be enough to get the Rebels over the line despite a late London fightback, with Justin Robinson (15pts, 10ast) trying to drag the Cavs to what would have been a valuable win.
