The Team of the Week

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Zach Powell – City of Birmingham Rockets, guard

31PTS/6REB/7ast/2stl/38EFF

Zach Powell is the latest D1M Player of the Week after an action packed performance against Nottingham Hoods.

31 points was tied with Derby's Malcolm Smith for most on the weekend, and six boards, seven assists and a pair of steals provided plenty of additional value for the Rockets.

Shooting an eye-catching 12/15 (80%) from the floor, Powell did it all in less than 30 minutes of action (29:15).

A game-high five turnovers were the only note of caution on the performance overall, but with so many other factors going in Powell's favour, he's a worthy winner.

Malcolm Smith – Derby Trailblazers, forward

31pts/8reb/2ast/3stl/29eff

Derby captain Malcolm Smith was on a mission this weekend, playing a huge role in helping the Trailblazers edge past Milton Keynes 77-74.

14 of his 31 points came in the fourth quarter alone, helping DTB to take the frame 26-17 for the come back win, and his eight rebounds, two assists and three steals were also a bonus.

In a three point game, Smith's +/- of +11 was key, and a team-high for the title challengers.

Kofi Josephs – Bradford Dragons, guard

23PTS/4reb/8ast/2stl/27EFF

Helping Bradford to their first D1M win of the season, Kofi Josephs earns a spot in the latest Team of the Week for his 27 efficiency performance.

Going 4/7 from long range, Josephs feasted at the foul line after being fouled a bruising eight times, a team-high.

Hitting 11 of his 14 shots from the stripe, Josephs kept Bradford ticking over, and his eight assists also brought others into the game as the visitors pushed five players to 14 points or more.

Top scoring and leading the way in a balanced team performance, Josephs is a solid selection this week.

K.J Johnson – Milton Keynes Breakers, guard

22PTS/7REB/9ast/30EFF

It was a mixed weekend for MK as they beat London on Saturday before falling to Derby on Sunday, but regardless of result, guard K.J Johnson was on form.

The American's stat line in the win over the Cavs was solid, nearing triple-double territory with 22 points, seven rebounds and nine rebounds.

With no other Breaker passing 18 efficiency in the contest, Johnson's contribution was a big one, and accounting for just two turnovers across 37:47 of play.

Johnson played the full 40 minutes on Sunday for 28 points, 13 assists and five boards, showing he had plenty in the tank for the Breakers across the double-header weekend.

Vilmantas Dilys – Bristol Hurricanes - forward

22PTS/16REB/3AST/2stl/2blk/35eff

A selection from a beaten team, Dilys did everything he could as Bristol came up just short against Essex Rebels, 76-72.

It was a slender loss for the playoff chasing Hurricanes, with Dilys more than doing his bit with a sizable and efficient double-double. 22 points went with 16 rebounds, shooting 8/13 (61%) to make it happen.

The former EuroLeague man also chipped in four stops with a pair of steals and two blocks, and just one turnover in 37:09 of court time - all big pluses despite the final result.

Dragons roar to first win

It's been a long time coming, but Bradford picked up their first win of the season this past weekend, on the road no less, as they beat Loughborough 93-83.

Josephs has been mentioned above for his role, but Justin Williams (19pts, 7ast), Micah Savery-Richards (18pts, 7ast), Rihards Sulcs (14pts, 5reb) and Jordan Whelan (14pts, 6reb) all deserve credit for their part in the success.

Two things stood out in the win, with both boding well for the Dragons going forward. One was that they dished 26 assists in the contest, significantly higher than their 16.4APG average so far this season. As a team working for each other to make great looks, Bradford outshot their opponents 50%-40% in the win.

Secondly, Bradford showed great resilience in securing their maiden win. With a lead that touched 15 points after a 26-14 opening quarter, Loughborough then fought back to lead by a point at the half.

Coach Mellor's side didn't let that set back knock them off course though, taking the third frame 23-12 to head into the final ten minutes up by double digits once again.

The West Yorkshire outfit still have work to do if they're to get out of their current predicament, but this weekend was a start, and one they can build on with games against Bristol, Newcastle and a return leg with Loughborough before the end of the month.

D1M remains as competitive as ever

With the exception of unbeaten leaders Hemel, who sit atop the division at 10-0, D1M continues to provide fans with close games, unexpected results and competitive action.

Four of this weekend's six games were decided by ten points or less, with one possession games in Milton Keynes and Derby. Just four points separates the top four from dropping out of the playoffs entirely in ninth place, adding further spice to each passing week.

With a clearer split beginning to emerge between the top three, the bottom three or four, then everyone else in between, it's going to be a thrilling couple of months for basketball fans across the country.
