NBL1 Team of the Week (18 January 2025)

Reading's Justin Hopkins wasn't the only player earning individual honours this weekend, with our latest Player and Team of the Week selections joining the newly-crowned National Cup MVP.

Four games took place on Saturday, with big wins for Nottingham, Milton Keynes, Loughborough and Bristol, before Sunday's Cup showpiece took centre stage.

Have your say on this week's choices and give a shout-out to the players you think deserve one using the hashtag #NBL2425. Don't forget to tag us!

How it works

We'll pick a Player of the Week and four other selections to round out the Team of the Week, paying attention to the following criteria:

  • Efficiency
  • Stats
  • Team and opposition strength
  • Periods of influence in the game
  • Being on a winning team (exceptional performances from players on losing teams will be considered for TOTW)

Other players will also receive a shout out as honourable mentions at the bottom of the piece.

The Team of the Week

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Adrian Scarborough – Milton Keynes Breakers, forward

25PTS/5REB/3ast/2stl/28EFF

With four different MK players all putting up an efficiency rating of 23 or more in their 103-87 road win against Worthing, the Breakers gave themselves a solid chance of picking up our Player of the Week honours.

The nod eventually went to American Adrian Scarborough for a solid stat line, efficient shooting and limited court time, with all three combining to get him to the front of the queue.

Scarborough had a joint team-high 25 points, but doing it on 10-12 shooting (83%) was what really made the difference, making something good happen with pretty much every shot he took.

Five rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals demonstrated his abilities elsewhere, and his +/- of 36 was comfortably a team-high in the 16-point win.

Scarborough also saw the second-lowest court time of all MK's starters at 24:48, with only Chris Tawiah (23:55) having less. For Scarborough to put together a performance like that, in less than 25 minutes of action, made him a strong choice this week.

Daniel Edozie  – Bristol Hurricanes, forward

17pts/10reb/6ast/26eff

Edozie was doing his usual thing in Bristol's 89-78 victory against Bradford Dragons.

17 points came on 7/12 (58%) shooting, taking all but one of his attempts from inside the arc. 10 rebounds provided another double-double for the former Team England man's season total, but his six assists were the real eye-catcher, trailing only team mate Denzel Ubiaro's seven in that category.

A steal and a block provided a pair of stops on defence, further adding to Edozie's well-rounded stat line this weekend.

Nate Robinson – Milton Keynes Breakers, guard

25PTS/5ast/5stl/26EFF

Unsurprisingly, Milton Keynes double up in the Team of the Week as Nate Robinson joins POTW Scarborough in the five.

As is often the case, Robinson provided the Breakers with their main threat from long range, hitting four of his nine efforts from downtown as part of a 25-point haul.

Five assists and five steals were also a great return from the former Manchester Giants' man, providing Worthing with little respite at both ends of the court.

Greg Skoric – Nottingham Hoods, forward

18PTS/10REB/22EFF

Plenty of attention has rightly headed towards Elliot Bailey for his incredible game winner against the Trailblazers, but Greg Skoric was the main man responsible for getting Nottingham into a position to pull off their local derby heist on Saturday night.

An efficient finisher around the rim, all seven of Skoric's baskets came within touching distance of the glass as he went to work doing what he does best. That resulted in a 7/10 (70%) shooting performance that kept the Hoods' score board ticking over throughout.

His 18 points trailed only Landon Taliaferro's 19, and ten rebounds were a team-high. A real presence at both ends, Skoric was a big reason behind Nottingham's upset road win.

Nottingham's Greg Skoric (Rico Mariano)

Rob Marsden – Derby Trailblazers, forward

12PTS/11REB/6AST/26eff

Rob Marsden may have been on the wrong end of Derby's 81-80 contest against local rivals Nottingham, but the veteran forward still put together a quality stat line.

Malcolm Smith top scored with 26 points, but Marsden's efficient 12-point, 11-rebound double to go with six assists and just a single turnover in nearly 25 minutes of play was a real do-it-all performance for the hosts.

Marsden also played a smart game, picking up just one of his team's 16 fouls, and his 26 efficiency was a team-high by seven points.

Nottingham pick up famous win

Few would have tabbed Nottingham to go to title-chasing Derby's house and steal a win, but coach Dragosavac's side did just that, heading back along the A52 with an 81-80 victory.

Skoric's double-double was key in the win, with Landon Taliaferro (19pts, 4reb), Elliot Bailey (11pts, 9reb) and Kayne King (4pts, 6reb, 10ast) also chipping in with useful performances.

Winners of just three of the thirteen league games between the two sides heading into Saturday's clash, the W could act as a springboard for the Hoods to pull away from bottom two Worthing and Bradford over the coming weeks.

That won't be easy, given the Midlanders play City of Birmingham, Reading, Milton Keynes and Hemel in their next four games, but momentum is firmly on their side right now.

Mk stars shine to dampen zaire's return

Zaire Taylor's 24 minute cameo wouldn't be enough to spark Worthing to a win against Milton Keynes as the Breakers starters put together a quality outing in the 103-87 contest on the South coast.

An even opening frame gave way to a 31-16 second quarter that provided the visitors with a lead they'd never relinquish, with a number of quality performances across the MK roster.

Scarborough and Robinson both have their plaudits above, but K.J. Johnson (18pts, 13ast) and Chris Tawiah (16pts, 8reb) also did their part, providing coach Beddow-Patel's side with plenty of firepower.

27 points from D1M's scoring leader Elijah Maynard proved to be the main source of resistance alongside Taylor's 19 points, with the popular Worthing man draining 5/8 from three-point land to show he's still got plenty left in the tank.
