NBL1 Team of the Week (25/26 January 2025)

There were big results across D1M this past weekend, with plenty of players producing huge performances for their respective teams.

A pair of wins for Bradford and one for Nottingham have provided plenty of spice to the ongoing relegation battle, while the title battle is now a two-horse race between Reading and Hemel.

Have your say on this week's choices and give a shout-out to the players you think deserve one using the hashtag #NBL2425. Don't forget to tag us!

  • Efficiency
  • Stats
  • Team and opposition strength
  • Periods of influence in the game
  • Being on a winning team (exceptional performances from players on losing teams will be considered for TOTW)

Other players will also receive a shout out as honourable mentions at the bottom of the piece.

The Team of the Week

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Mitch Clarke – Reading Rockets, guard

39PTS/5REB/7ast/2stl/45EFF

Clarke is a man on a mission right now, putting together a stunning stat line against Derby a week after helping Reading to the NBL National Cup.

In Sunday's big game at the top, Clarke and Co all but ended Derby's hopes of defending their regular-season title, with the Australian-born British passport holder producing the standout performance of the weekend in the 105-92 victory.

Thirty nine points topped any other player in D1M over the two days, and hitting 64% of his shots (including 5/9 3pt) meant the talented guard made his efforts count.

Fouled an incredible 11 times, Clarke also went a perfect 12/12 from the free throw line to punish each and every transgression, with seven assists and five rebounds proving to be the icing on the cake.

Darien Nelson-Henry  – Hemel Storm, forward

20pts/14reb/5ast/4stl/33eff vs WOR
17pts/11reb/2ast/4blk/30eff vs ess

Hemel's standout forward provided not one but two 30+ efficiency outings this weekend to ensure Storm didn't suffer any kind of National Cup hangover.

A 20-point, 14-rebound double-double in the 83-75 victory over Worthing was followed up by Sunday's 17-point, 11-rebound double-double against Essex, but it was the former BBL man's additional stats that provided real value.

Seven assists across the weekend were a great showing, as were eight stops across the two contests.

Hemel could have been forgiven for dropping off following their disappointment in Manchester, but their D1M conquest remains right on track and Nelson-Henry was a big part of that this weekend.

Edward Onyia – Loughborough Riders, forward

26PTS/13reb/5ast/36EFF vs LON

Ndoukou will no doubt have grabbed some headlines for his game-high 33 points in Loughborough's 107-99 double OT win against London Cavaliers, but it was young forward Edward Onyia who underpinned the victory with some quality play.

Twenty six points were a solid contribution, as were a game-high 13 rebounds, whilst Onyia's five assists trailed only team-mate Justin Hedley's nine.

Splashing six triples showed another string to Onyia's bow, but his turnover count and +/- really caught the eye. Playing whopping 39:16 of action without coughing the ball up once was incredible, whilst his +/- of +17 was the highest on his team in the eight point win.

As if that wasn't enough, Onyia also nailed a huge triple late in the first period of OT to keep Loughborough in the contest, a key contribution from the rising star.

It should be noted that the Loughborough man also played a low-key role in Sunday's loss to Bradford, but his exploits 24 hours earlier made him more than worthy of inclusion in this week's five.

Adrian Scarborough – Milton Keynes Breakers, forward

26PTS/15REB/2ast/2stl/38EFF

Last week's Player of the Week returns, albeit in the Team of the Week this time, as Milton Keynes' Adrian Scarborough remains a man in red hot form.

It was another trademark outing from the American, dropping 26 points on high percentage looks as he hit 12/17FG (70%) all from inside the arc.

Eight of his points came in MK's dominant 29-17 first quarter that set the platform for the 105-66 win against City of Birmingham, and with a dunk and an alley-oop in that stretch, Scarborough also got the home crowd on their feet in the process.

Cleaning the glass with ease, no player had more rebounds than Scarborough's 15, and with six offensive boards mixed in, he was dominant at both ends of the court.

Rihards Sulcs – Bradford Dragons, forward

17PTS/9REB/4AST/4stl/25eff vs NEW
19PTS/6REB/4AST/3stl/25eff vs LOU

Whilst he may not have had the biggest numbers in either of the weekend's games, it is hard to argue that many players made a bigger impact for their side than Bradford's Sulcs.

The NBL veteran put together two solid performances to lead his side to a pair of vital wins, starting with 94-82 W over Newcastle and ending with the 95-83 success over Loughborough.

Sulcs didn't top-score in either contest but did provide top-three contributions. It was his additional value from 15 combined rebounds, plus eight assists and seven steals across the weekend that got him the nod though, consistently finding a way to help his team when they needed it most.

Bradford are still in a fight at the bottom, but they have some life after this weekend and their captain is a big reason for it.

Plenty of Fire left in the Dragons

After an underwhelming 1-11 campaign to date, the Dragons roared back into life over the weekend, winning both games of their double-header to move off the foot of the D1M table.

Their revival has come at a key time, with fellow strugglers Nottingham Hoods also picking up back-to-back wins to begin reversing their own fortunes.

Saturday's 92-84 victory against Newcastle involved a balanced attack on offence, with Jordan Whelan's 21 points leading four other players on 13 points or more. The Dragons consistently worked good looks to shoot 51% from the field, and won the rebounding battle 46-35 for good measure.

Sunday's 95-83 win against Loughborough was a similar story. Justin Williams (27pts) led five players on 11 points or more, with Sulcs once again showcasing his all around talent as mentioned above.

There's still a long way to go before the final standings are decided, but Bradford will be delighted with their efforts over the last few days.

Hemel remain untouched despite cup final setback

Anyone hoping that Hemel's loss against Reading Rockets in the NBL National Cup Final would knock the Storm off course in D1M was mistaken, with the reigning playoff champs reeling off another two wins this past weekend to move to 12-0.

Worthing Thunder (83-75) and Essex Rebels (95-83) were the latest pair of sides to suffer at the hands of Hemel's perfect steak, with Darien Nelson-Henry powering his side across the weekend.

Matt Ellis took the night off on Saturday before returning to drop 20 points on the Rebels, with Trent Monkman and Tra' Michael Moton (17pts each) both stepping to the fore in the Canadian's absence.

Eighteen assists combined across the weekend for Sam Newman also made Hemel's job easier, with the talented guard continuing to grow his D1M-leading 8.5APG average.

Twelve more wins stand between Hemel and another perfect regular season campaign, as they managed in 2022/23, though games against Derby and Reading both await in February.
