Northampton Neptunes' girls back to Europe for big challenge

The Northampton Neptunes U16 girls team have travelled to Ružomberok, Slovakia for the second stage of the Middle European League (MEL), competing against some of Europe’s best junior basketball clubs.

Neptunes face ASK Slávia Trnava (SVK) in their opening game today (6 February), followed by games on Friday against Alba Berlin (GER) at 09:00 (GMT) and MBK Ruzomberok (SVK) 16:45 (GMT).

On Saturday, they finish their campaign against Norrköping Dolphins (SWE) at 08:30 (GMT).

Great and humbling experience

Ahead of the trip, Head Coach Mark Spatcher said the first stage of the competition was an 'amazing' learning experience for the whole club.

"The girls experienced a lot of success in 2024, they won the national conference finals at U14 level and they also won the Globasket B division in Spain.

"As a full U15 set of girls competing up a year and against such good competition, [stage one of the] Middle European League was a real baptism [of fire] at this level but one the girls have loved and embraced.

"To take 11 girls that that live within a five mile radius in a small town in the midlands and compete against two national teams from Romania and Luxembourg and other top European academies was a great and humbling experience.

"As a group and as individuals, it’s given us the opportunity to compete against top opposition. As a collective we learnt a lot from our time in Hungary and it reinforced the things we strive to become as a team."
