Primary Schools: Get kids hooked on basketball through Slam Jam

Basketball England wants primary schools across the country to get more kids playing basketball by becoming deliverers of Slam Jam.

The grassroots basketball programme, which is designed for 7-11-year-olds, is aligned with Key Stage 2's physical education strand of the primary school curriculum, where children develop a ‘broad range of skills and improve in different sports and physical activities’

Created by basketball and educational experts, Slam Jam is designed to enhance fundamental movement and perceptual motor skills and give children a great first experience of basketball in fun, safe and engaging environments.

The schools’ Slam Jam package costs £150 and includes an equipment pack of basketballs, lesson plans, Slam Jam branded goodies and training for the Slam Jam activator, as well as a uniform.

Basketball England’s Participation Programmes Manager Nick Holloway said:

“We are excited to promote Slam Jam and its benefits to primary schools across England, helping children become lifelong players of the game and giving them the competence and confidence to enjoy being physically active.

“After it was relaunched last year, the programme has been galvanised by our clubs and other delivery partners to give children an awesome first experience of basketball.

“We know through our work within the education sector that many schools want to add basketball to their roster of sports because of its inclusive and fun-to-play nature.

“Slam Jam in schools will support teachers in using basketball as a vehicle to get their students active and meet their curriculum goals.”

Slam Jam was relaunched in 2024 after its national roll out was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over 30 delivery partners across England have been delivering the six-week programme, which was first piloted in 2019 to 1,000 children.

Sessions are packed with games, competitions and activities led by activators who are fully trained by Basketball England.

With minimal equipment required (basketballs, bibs, cones), the programme can also be delivered almost anywhere.
