COVID-19 update on impact of Omicron variant

Basketball England is closely monitoring the impact of the new Omicron variant of COVID-19.

Following a review of information on Omicron, the BE medical team believes there currently is no reason to change guidelines around play and practice.

However, wearing face masks, maintaining social distance and good hand-hygiene remain important to keep the game as safe as possible.

BE Chief Medical Officer Dr Dane Vishnubala describes the situation as ‘optimistic but changeable’.

He said: “We will have to wait a few weeks to see if the scientific community issue further guidelines once more is known about this new variant, as well as the effectiveness of the current Covid-19 vaccines on it.

“We will closely follow the emerging news and continue to assess the risk to the sport as the situation evolves.”

BE encourages members to get vaccinated where possible as this has been proven to reduce the risk of serious illness if an individual contracts COVID-19.

Individuals should also self-screen prior to training or playing and should isolate as per Government guidelines if you have symptoms of COVID-19 and get a PCR test.
