Black History Month 2023: Celebrating the achievements of Black women

The theme for this year’s Black History Month (BHM), as per blackhistorymonth.org.uk, is ‘Saluting Our Sisters’.

The month-long celebration, which runs from the 1-31 October every year in the UK, is a commemoration of moments in history, achievements and the contributions that Black people have made to British society.

This year, it will be dedicated to honouring the achievements of Black women and ‘the crucial role that they have played in shaping history, inspiring change, and building communities’.

Basketball in England has been shaped and influenced by Black British culture and heritage and embraced by the whole basketball community.

Let us celebrate Black History Month, and highlight the stories of the Black women who have done so much for the game.

First brought to the UK in the 1980s, BHM was initially introduced to the country by a member of the Greater London Council, Akyaaba Addai Sebo.

Since 1987, Black History Month has been celebrated to eradicate discrimination and encourage racial equality.
