Facilities, both indoor and outdoor, are integral to the sport at all levels

There are thousands of indoor and outdoor basketball courts across England.

If you run a facility, you can get information on registration, standard regulations and maintenance.

#ProjectSwish can help give your local court some new nets, or even a new lease of life, whilst there's also information below on indoor and outdoor court specifications, equipment hire and more.

Indoor courts

If you run an indoor facility or are looking to develop one, you can get information on technical guidance and maintenance below.

Line markings

Having accurate and up to date basketball line markings is a vital component of your sports floor and a requirement for all Basketball England NBL, WNBL and Jnr. NBL leagues.

Basketball Line Marking Requirements

  • The official court size is 28m x 15m (measured to the inside of the boundary line)
  • All lines should be 5cm wide
  • Lines should be in a contrasting colour to the playing surface and visible to all

Considerations

  • In multi-sport venues, when possible we recommend that the basketball court lines are number 1 in the hierarchy of lines i.e. basketball lines sit on top of all other line markings for other sports.
  • If your court is to be used for FIBA international games, please note FIBA require a 2m boundary on all sides of the court in a contrasting colour to the rest of the playing surface. Please see the FIBA rules for details.
  • Branding and logos can be added to courts to give it the ‘home’ court look and feel. Any logos or branding should not cover line markings, pin stripe lines or lines of hash marks should be used to indicate lines on logos.
  • Temporary branding or logos applied to courts should provide the same slip resistance as the ordinary playing surface.
  • Temporary line markings can be used for events. We suggest the use of specific low tack line marking tape to mark out a basketball court, specialist equipment is required to get the circles and arks. We recommend using DYNAMIK Sports Floors for all line marking work. Please note that use of line marking tape comes with some risk of damage to the playing surface on removal. Other types of tape should not be used on sports floors as they may damage, leave a sticky residue or mark on the floor. Taping of lines is only suggested as a temporary solution.

Flooring

Having a great and safe floor to play on is very important for a game of basketball.

Slip resistance, correct elasticity, and performance are just the few things to think about when selecting a floor for your facility. For indoor basketball courts, sprung timber systems are the traditional option as they are long lasting and provide excellent comfort and support for players.

Scoring and shot clocks

Having a scoreboard is essential for playing competitive games and can be used at all levels.

Ranging from community facilities in schools, where a table top electronic scoreboard would be suitable, to wall-mounted scoreboards for NBL and club level competitions, and international arenas that can incorporate a central scoreboard cube suspended above the centre of the court.

Shot clocks are required in Under 16, Under 18 and Senior-level Basketball England NBL competitions and higher, plus international competitions. There are a range of shot clocks available to cater for all competition levels.

Seating

The inclusion of seating at sporting facilities allows for spectator events to be held and it provides a space for parents/fans to watch training sessions.

This can also help clubs to generate more money through allowing spectators to attend sessions as well as hosting a variety of events, making it more attractive for external users looking for smaller arenas.

Outdoor

Looking for all the info on outdoor courts? We've got you covered.

Outdoor courts offer the unique opportunity for players to play and practise on their own, join friends and play together casual games of 1v1, 2v2, 3x3 etc. or play 5v5 full court games.

These outdoor settings can be used by clubs and recreational players for informal games or more structured competitions, such as 3x3 tournaments and summer leagues.

There a many things to consider when renovating a court such as the playing surface, court markings, equipment, fencing and lighting.

Line markings

Having the correct line markings is high on the list of priorities when players are looking for places to play. Even if there isn’t space for a full court, players appreciate partial line markings such as the restricted area or 3-point line.

The official FIBA line markings for full court 5v5 basketball and half court 3x3 basketball are available in the Related Resources section of this page.

Equipment

With an outdoor court, it is important to have suitable equipment for use in all types of weather and setting.

Outdoor basketball also offers the opportunity for sports providers to consider small sites that can accommodate facilities for basketball, for example:

• A single backboard and ring placed on flat area with no court markings.
• A single post and backboard set up as part of the perimeter fencing on a MultiUse Games Area (MUGA) with limited court markings.
• Two half courts on a play area too small to accommodate a full-size court

Court renovations and #ProjectSwish

We want to facilitate a network of inspiring outdoor courts to allow people to play basketball in a safe and suitable space.

Through an expansion of our #ProjectSwish initiative, Basketball England provides thousands of free basketball nets each summer along with support, advice and a framework to help create great spaces to play and give basketball.

We want individuals, clubs and local authorities - with our help – to provide opportunities to play by renovating local courts. If you are thinking about starting an outdoor court renovation project for your local court in need, please check out out court renovation guide from the related resources section of this page.

Estimated project costs and a list of potential sources of funding for outdoor courts have also been included.
