Courses: Introduction to statistics
This online course gives you an insight into statistics, why they are important, the various criteria and the use of FIBA LiveStats software.
It provides an introduction to statistics and use of FIBA LiveStats software for recording statistics during games.
Successful completion of this course will help prepare you to record statistics in Basketball England's NBL competitions. Practice in other games is strongly recommended before attempting NBL games.
You will need access to a laptop or computer to complete this course. It is strongly recommended that you download FIBA Live Stats version 8 prior to signing up to this course, to ensure your device can operate it (N.B. the software only works on Windows devices).

Expected duration: 4 hours
Pre-requisites: A Basketball England member, some basketball knowledge required
Recommended minimum age: 14 years

Learner requirements
- Ensure that you are a Basketball England member
- Sign up to the course and pay HERE
- Complete the online modules (estimated time 3 hours)
- Complete and pass the practice assessment
- Purchase a statisticians licence. This is required before officiating any game
- Start your journey as a statistician and officiate some games
You will need access to a laptop, computer or smart device to complete the online modules.
Theory modules
The course consists of modules which you can complete at your own pace. You are able to learn in your own time and can keep coming back to Learning Nexus as often as you like. The modules consist of:

- Statistical Categories
- FLS Actions
- Practice Game
- Summary
Practice scoresheet assessment
You will provided with a game video in the online modules and you are required to complete the first half of the stats.
Once you have completed the course you are ready to officiate some games. Learners should start their officiating with lower level games in the first instance - junior central venue league games and local recreational level is perfect practice and a great training ground for new starters.
Before officiating any games you are required to sign-up to the Basketball England Membership portal and pay for a statisticians licence.
Completing the qualification
Upon completion of the online modules and practice assessment, you will be qualified and receive an e-certificate.
