Safeguarding training and research resources and guidance

You may be a guru or a complete novice, but there is always something new to learn when it comes to safeguarding and child protection. 

This page directs you to the courses, training and research that safeguarding encompasses to help educate and promote continued learning. 

Basketball England

For coach renewals, officials and referees, we now only accept the BE Safeguarding Course. You can enrol on this course by clicking HERE

This course is valid for three years once completed. BE will update your membership profile upon successful completion of this course. 

Members with in date safeguarding training (from an external provider) already attached to their membership profile will be asked to undertake the BE training at the point their existing training expires.  

In the case of Club Welfare Officers, we would ask that both the Safeguarding Course and Club Welfare Officer Course are undertaken prior to the end of August 2024.

The Safeguarding Course costs £20 for members and takes approximately three hours online. The Club Welfare Officer Course is £25 and takes approximately one hour online.

Club Welfare Officers 

In addition to the Basketball England Safeguarding Course, Club Welfare Officers must undertake the Club Welfare Officer Safeguarding Module, which gives additional information that is specific to this role. This is a mandatory requirement as set by the Child Protection in Sport Unit.

Continuing Professional Development

In addition to the mandatory safeguarding training there are also many opportunities to increase your awareness of safeguarding related topics.

 

NSPCC

The NSPCC provide additional consultancy to help grow child protection knowledge and skills.

It provides different courses to help embed good practice throughout organisations and clubs, they range from: 

Research and learning - the NSPCC has a whole section of its website dedicated to research, leaflets, guidance and evaluations, sharing what they have learned from their services to children and families.

Sign up to the Current Awareness Service for Practice, Policy and Research email alerts, which gives regular updates on safeguarding.

Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU)

The CPSU has developed webinars, conferences and training events to develop knowledge and skills in safeguarding and child protection across a variety of subjects, which can be found here

The CPSU also has a range of webinars that discuss the latest advice, guidance and best practice examples of safeguarding within sport.

You may be looking to develop your own practices or need a toolkit to assess your safeguarding needs, the CPSU has a resource library full or publications, videos and toolkits to help you sure up your own practices.

UK Coaching

UK Coaching provide various different courses for anyone who works within the sport sector, including a large range of online and face-to-face safeguarding and protecting people workshops.

Anti-Bullying Alliance

As part of Anti-Bullying Alliance’s All Together programme it has developed a suite of free online training for anyone that works with children and young people.

The programme was particularly developed to reduce levels of bullying of disabled children and those with special educational needs but it applies to all children.

Education from the National Crime Agency

CEOP Education offers a range of training courses for those who work directly with children and young people, including the Keeping Children Safe Online elearning created in partnership with the NSPCC. 

Ivison Trust

Keep Them Safe: Protecting Children from Child Sexual Exploitation is free short online course for parents and carers, where you can find out more about: 

  • Child sexual exploitation
  • The signs and indicators of when a child might be being exploited
  • The impact child sexual exploitation can have on families
  • What to do if you suspect a child might be at risk of this

Disability Matters

Disability Matters has free online learning packages to enable organisations, workers and volunteers to develop the communication and problem-solving skills required to engage confidently with disabled children and young people.

Female Genital Mutilation

Female genital mutilation (also known as FGM) refers to procedures that intentionally alter or cause injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. This practice is illegal in the UK.

The NSPCC has developed advice to help keep children and young people safe from FGM.

Gender Identity Research & Education Society

GIRES is a UK wide organisation whose purpose is to improve the lives of trans and gender diverse people of all ages, including those who are non-binary and non-gender.

It also delivers training, e-learning, and information to public and private sector organisations, including support for the trans and gender diverse community and the people who support them.

Modern slavery

This UK Government resource is designed to share examples of training products available to public sector professionals and other individuals that might come across victims to help raise awareness, better spot the signs and increase confidence in reporting modern slavery when potential cases are encountered.

Preventing radicalisation

Prevent is one part of the government’s overall counter-terrorism strategy, CONTEST. The aim of Prevent is to:

  • tackle the ideological causes of terrorism
  • intervene early to support people susceptible to radicalisation
  • enable those who have already engaged in terrorism to disengage and rehabilitate

Self Harm and risky behaviour

The MindEd Self-Harm and Risky Behaviour online module is aimed at a universal audience and provides the background to self harm in children and teenagers, common associated conditions and the optimal approach to managing it in the community.

Suicide prevention

We need to talk about suicide: helping everyone to feel more confident to talk about suicide is an e-Learning programme that has been developed for the wider public health workforce including voluntary sector, blue light services, prison staff and prison listeners health and social care.

It was developed by a range of experts including experts by experience, ie those people who have attempted to take their own lives and those bereaved and affected by suicide.

The programme takes approximately between 60-90 minutes to complete.

Trafficking

ECPAT UK provides training throughout the UK and internationally on child protection in tourism and on the protection of child victims of trafficking.

Understand young minds

Virtual College has worked in partnership with SelfharmUK to create a free online course designed to help parents talk about the issue of self-harm with their children.
