Disciplinary process and expected behaviours
All participants have an important role to play in upholding standards of behaviour and ensuring that everyone involved in basketball experiences a safe and inclusive environment.
If you have a concern or have witnessed something that doesn’t seem right it should be reported to BE for further investigation.
The Disciplinary Code, launched in 2022, provides a framework for the procedures and processes that will be followed for serious matters, including allegations of discrimination, aggravated breaches and serious offences against match officials.
Code of Ethics and Conduct
The Code of Ethics and Conduct applies to everyone involved in basketball at every level under the jurisdiction of Basketball England, including players, match officials, coaches, administrators, club officials, and spectators.
All of these individuals have a responsibility to act according to the highest standards of integrity and to ensure that the reputation of basketball is beyond reproach.
Those involved in basketball must respect the rights, dignity and worth of every person, player and non-player alike, treating everyone equally within the context of the game. In particular, be aware of the special needs of young people and vulnerable adults, their well-being, including difficulties or possible abuse experienced from within the game or from other sources.
Disciplinary Code
The Disciplinary Code is a commitment to strengthening the integrity of basketball at all levels to make it as fair, safe and enjoyable as possible for everyone involved.
The Code underpins the rules and regulations governing all participants – players, coaches, officials, staff and volunteers, setting out a fair and transparent process to be followed where there is a potential breach of rules or regulations.
The Code aims to reset the standards of acceptable conduct outlined in the Code of Ethics and Conduct, and build trust in the organisation to take action when behaviour falls below the standard expected by the basketball community.
The Disciplinary Code and Publication Policy came into effect from 1 September 2022 and is applicable to any incidents committed on or after this date.

Discipline sanctions and process
To ensure a fair and transparent process, sanction guidelines have been produced that give guidance on the sanctions for various misconduct offences.
This will assist with consistency of sanctions, and ensure it is clear what factors will be considered when a decision is made on a sanction.
It will help ensure that all members know what sanction can be expected for the different types of offences.
The decisions are made by the Discipline Commission or Appeal Board, which are independent from Basketball England.
They are appointed to consider cases in accordance with Basketball England’s rules and regulations but have autonomy in making any such decision.
They will decide on the level of any sanction in accordance with the sanction guidelines and any minimum sanctions referenced in the Disciplinary Code. If applicable, they may take into account any sanction was has already been applied by a league, club or institution.
Publication of discipline decisions
