EuroBasket 2029 Pre-Qualifier: British squad confirmed for opener against Switzerland
Great Britain Men's head coach Marc Steutel has confirmed the 12-player squad that will take to the floor against Switzerland in the opening game of the FIBA EuroBasket 2029 Pre-Qualifiers on Thursday evening.
The fixture in Fribourg marks the beginning of Great Britain's journey towards EuroBasket 2029, with Steutel's side looking to make a positive start on the road before returning home later in the window to face Slovakia in Newcastle on Sunday (5pm).
The squad combines experienced internationals with an exciting new generation of talent, as Great Britain continue to build on the momentum generated across recent international windows.
Speaking ahead of the opening game, Steutel believes his side is ready for the challenge.
Great Britain head coach Marc Steutel said:
"Camp has been very enjoyable. There has been great competition and spirit within the group, and a lot of camaraderie has been built. The levels of intent with every part of our play has been where we want it. We’ve pushed each other in the right way, we feel focused, we’re competitive and hopefully we get the outcome that we want.
"Nobody takes being here for granted. We’ve got to be present and enjoy this experience. When we get here we’ve got to take pride and immerse ourselves in the GB Way. The focus from day one has been high and we’ve built upon that as the camp has gone on.
"International basketball is exceptionally competitive. Switzerland will be playing with a level of hunger to defend home court, and we’ve got to respond to and adapt to that. At some point we’ll get punched in the face and we must find a way to hit back, which I’m confident we will. We feel focused, we’re competitive and hopefully we get the outcome that we want."
The EuroBasket 2029 Pre-Qualifiers represent the first competitive fixtures of a new international cycle, with Great Britain aiming to build a strong foundation as they pursue qualification for Europe's premier basketball tournament.
The support of British fans has continued to grow throughout recent campaigns, and the squad will be looking to reward that backing with a strong opening performance in Switzerland before bringing the team back in front of a home crowd later in the week.
