Young player's 'No Days Off' basketball challenge raises over £850 for school

For some, playing basketball is a great activity to dip into throughout the week. But for nine-year-old Hugo, it was his whole summer!

Hugo, who plays for Reading Rockets and Fleet Flyers Under-12s, decided he would spend his summer playing basketball every day, raising money for his school in the process. And by every day, he meant it. Despite a bout of the flu, and a holiday to Paris, the young baller stuck to his word and hit all 43 days across the school holidays.

Aiming to play for 30 minutes a day, Hugo enjoyed the challenge so much he smashed his 1,290 minute target to clock up over 3,000 minutes!

"I thought it would be a good opportunity to help my school community whilst at the same time get better everyday instead of playing video games all summer," said Hugo.

"The easiest thing was just to be playing the sport I love, but it was hard when I was ill. Playing through the first week when I got the flu and lost my voice, and having muscle fatigue.

"I feel proud knowing that I helped my school’s charity, and basketball community, whilst getting better every day!"

Hugo was raising money for PAWS, Parents at Westfields School, which is a charitable organisation run by parent and family volunteers (and supported by staff and governors) seeking to raise funds to benefit the school's community.

The money raised will be used to buy basketball equipment - in Hugo's words: "I wanted to do good and give back to the sport I love so much."

Hugo's GoFundMe page is still accepting donations should anyone wish to add to his total following his incredible challenge.
